Also I just remembered Scotty Goldman, so whoops, there goes that idea.

During the brief Barry Horowitz push where he got the costume and gimmick change, his music was Hava Nagila.

Total fuckin' silence.
He might have been cooling off at times, but it's crazy when you go back and watch old WCW shows to get the feeling that Goldberg was long-term killer over. The aftermath of the fingerpoke has the NWO hugging in the ring, grinning their heads off. Goldberg shows up, and the crowd goes mental! They want to see this big scary dude batter the middle-aged frat boys. Then he gets humiliated and you can almost hear the resulting :geno:. I can understand when those involved defend themselves by saying it wasn't that big a deal in killing WCW, but it's one of those moments that too clearly shows where WCW's priorities were.

It goes on for years. It's 2000, and Russo's in the ring with the New Blood, cutting some ridiculous promo using insider terms and in-jokes. The crowd get a little excited. Despite Goldberg being out with injury, they want the big scary dude to come down and wreck the villain's plans! Then he comes back and is turned heel because a "surprise" was promised, proceeds to cut bizarre "worked shoot" promos about how he doesn't want to be a heel and then DOESN'T FOLLOW THE SCRIPT!! Might have the order out here but still.

It's a little astounding how he managed to stay popular despite this nonsense and despite not always being on TV. Scott Hall seemed to get a similar reaction, but he at least had Nash in the later years to come out and say, "Guess who I just talked to???" to get "hey yo!" chants going.

My brother and I (aged eight and twelve respectively) were hype when that Goldberg advert played during Wrestlemania XIX. :colbert:

I stopped watching wrestling during the botched Invasion, so how was Goldberg's WWE run? I remember him being in a video game with a crappy ripoff version of his awesome WCW theme.

About the only good stuff I can remember from Goldberg's WWE run was Summerslam '03 (looked like a total badass before the finish), and him :killdozer:ing Little Guido in the '04 Rumble.

To expand briefly, I had to look it up because he had a pretty spectacularly unmemorable year bookended with vaguely memorable things. This was the period of brand-split PPVs so he only had eight matches:

1) Beats Hollywood Rock in a sloppy but crowd-pleasing match
2) Beats Chris Jericho in a match that for some reason turned into Jericho working submissions on an injured Goldberg for like ten minutes
3) Loses to HHH in an Elimination Chamber match via sledgehammer
4) Beats HHH to win the title
5) Beats HHH to retain the title
6) Loses the title to HHH
7) Goes into Royal Rumble as #30, eliminated by Kurt Angle, decides to get mad at Brock Lesnar instead
8) Beats Brock Lesnar in the trainwreck WMXX match, gets stunnered on the way out

That's his entire run. Fully half of it was ultimately used to put over HHH.

Name Change

On free TV he came out and convincingly killed someone every week--that was pretty much his entire thing. Christian's kids probably came out dizzy. So if you just stuck with TV his run was pretty good. His run unfortunately coincided with the business-destroying Triple H Main Event Run of Doom that somehow lasted three years, but was definitely at its worst in 2003.

If he had just killed everyone in the elimination chamber, which was what was happening before the sledgehammer finish, there would have been nothing wrong with that. I think that's mainly the thing that pisses everyone off about his run. Goldberg taking the title after obliterating five people would have been awesome and put him on a level above even where he was at.

I don't have Thunder yet, I think most of them are on youtube. I'm going to try to do a bunch of WCW games this fall, probably after we run out of QVC specials.

Yep, the big and small wrestlers each draw from two sets of moves, most of which are repeated. Each wrestler has 3 unique moves they can do in certain situations. It's pretty frustrating to play or I'd be recording more now. Same with WCW vs the World which uses an early more awkward version of the AKI control scheme.

Doesn't this describe pretty much every wrestling game before World Tour? The War Zone/Attitude devs even felt the need to put a cheat sheet in the pause menu, which I think is just about as clear a sign as you can get that the control scheme is flawed.

The n64 ones were like that too. Fun story, electronics boutique (now gamestop) ran a promo where you could trade in War Zone and buy attitude for $10. I have no idea how they made money on that one. I told some 20 year old at gamestop about that and had to explain it to him 3 times because he was so confused. I was also confused at 13 but didn't give a poo poo.
