To throw a hopefully final flame on the ring finger fire, it was also correlated with birth order. The first male child is more likely to have a longer pointer finger and be straight, and the likelihood of having a longer ring finger and being gay increased the further down the male birth order you were. I don't remember if it was someone plugging a book or just a segment on the paper, but there was a segment on The Colbert Report on this in its first couple of years.
