The pano roof has been problematic across the board. What I'd be more afraid of owning a high mileage TDI is the hpfp grenading. I'm trading my '11 in as soon as the new R is available. I just don't put enough miles a year on the car to really need a TDI and the new R is just so sexy.

Btw, does anyone know if the GTI is real leather, or a synthetic leather like material?

Real leather. It's pretty nice on the mk6.

I went and sat in both a GTI and Golf SEL last Friday. The leather is nice. The pano on the Golf/GTI is only slightly larger than the MK6, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Is it possible for me to isolate and fix rattles on my own? I've got some creaking/rattling coming from the vicinity of both front doors. Can the dealer do this better than I can? Sounds like they make you do a dance just to convince them you're not out of your mind. Sounds like they deal with a ton of this stuff for my model and similar.

Also is it possible I am terrible at locating the source of the noise, and it's something like the fuel line banging around?

Cross post from stupid question thread:01 VW Passat station wagon v6 automatic 125k miles has recently had a headlight problem. I replaced both headlights and the right headlight still would not illuminate. High-beams on both sides work. I checked the fuses for both low beams and they are fine, so I checked to see if there was power to either fuse slot and the right headlight fuse slot reads 0VDC. I'm not much of a gear head and am curious if I have any options other than having the entire fuse box replaced to restore functionality to my right headlight. All the other fuses read correctly.

I was also curious about how difficult it would be for me with only very basic tools to remove the fuse box and look for cracked/damaged or loose wiring.

Good luck trying to isolate and fix the rattles present on a VW.

The center vent in my car would rattle. I accidentally broke off some of the mounting tabs when I took it off a million times while loving with the radio and it no longer rattles. Wtf?

If you really want to dig into it, rip apart all the panels and put it back together with strips of felt between any pieces that overlap/rub.

Pretty much this. I had a brand new 2001 Jetta and the only way I could get rid of squeaks and poo poo was with tons of self adhesive felt around where the dash panels would meet.

Reminds me of when the Hyundai i30 was on display at an auto show and top VW honchos checked it out, and mentioned the steering wheel adjustment was firm and silent, and why they (VW) couldn't do the same.

I had both low beams go out simultaneously at night on a long road trip in my 04 Passat several months ago; when I replaced the left bulb and jiggled the right one around to replace it, it started working again. I don't remember if it's the 01 or the 02 that is the cutoff for the different headlight package, but may I recommend that you commence the jiggling?

I would but it seems as though the problem is upstream of the fuse box. Does anyone have any links to electrical schematics of the 01 era passat? I have looked online and found nothing. I just want to be street legal :coolfish:

As far as rattles go, my VWs have always been rattle free..........until I have stereo equipment installed and those fuckers never put poo poo back right. It's never a good sign when there are extra screws in the floorboard when you get the car back.

I did something dumb the other day and placed an order with a deposit for a car that doesn't exist and might not ever exist: the B8 Passat's R36 equivalent. I love my R36 but although it's only six years old it's starting to show its age. By the time any possible B8 equivalent comes around, it'll be time to replace it.

Engine options are my main concern. I'm simply not interested in a rehash of the Golf R's 2.boring turbo. Ideally it would have the manic 3.0TT VR6 from the GTI Design Vision but that's unlikely - more realistic options are the 2.5 turbo 5 or the 3.0 supercharged 6. I'll be happy with any of the three.

Basically the requirements for my contract to be valid are a modern Haldex system, DSG, and a forced induction petrol engine of five cylinders or more and engine capacity greater than two litres. Here's hoping.

An RS6 would be great, but not at the best part of $300000 on road in Australia. Get hosed.

Price and size, mainly. I need to buy new (thanks, work!) and they're something like $120000 plus an extensive options list. My B6 R36 was around $78000 with a few options. The R36 wagon is much more useful to me than the S4 wagon - it carries more stuff for adventures and the cabin doesn't feel as cramped. The B8 Passat might be different, though, so who knows.

The Audi tax in Australia is ridiculous :(

I guess the easiest way to think of it is the old platform designations.

B - Passat/A4
C - A6
D - A8

I'm about 6 months into owning a 09 Touareg VR6. Since it came with no manuals I don't really know how to work everything. I just discovered last week that the rear hatch glass opens independently of the hatch itself.
The op mentioned that he has access to all shop manuals and literature. Can you get a pdf of the owners manual or is that :filez:?
I want to add the factory tow package. I found a site selling the complete setup including controller for less than the dealer price, but it says it requires programming. Does that mean changing a value with a vag or is there software that has to be flashed?

Googling tells me that the 3.6 uses a timing chain that requires no service. I just want to confirm that since I'm at 90k now and a belt would be due.

I was in an A4 which felt really small if its the same size as a Passat.

edit: you are all right, the A4 and Passat share a platform, but if you look at the interior room, the A4 and the Jetta are extremely close. The Passat is on a lengthened platform [as compared to the A4], so it is a 'bigger' car than the A4 is. For my money, I'd rather have a Jetta GLI than an A4.

Seems too good to be true. Guess we'll have to wait and see how it works.

I'm not sure I like how its achieving the HP boost by tricking the ECU with false sensor readings. I know this sort of thing has been done before but it feels so hacky compared to a real ECU tune.

Purchased an 01 A6 2.8 non-turbo Quattro with what the guy thought was a blown engine. Turns out it just needed a driver's side head. He took a rock to the oil pan and ran it until the timing belt broke.

In addition to reworking the head, I went ahead and replaced the timing belt, other belts, water pump, alternator, radiator hoses and a few other things (plugs and injector that was stuck, etc.) Got it running on new synthetic oil, VW coolant, with no codes.

Car runs great, but I have not run it for longer than 20 minutes at a time or so. A few niggling things, one of which is the LCD, which does not work. I will be sending it off sometime soon as soon as my daughter has a break scheduled where I can have a few days downtime. I have had myairbags.com fix ABS modules before, so I will probably let them do it. $135 and lifetime warranty is a deal.

When the car is running for a bit (usually takes 15 minutes or so), I get three beeps and something illegible in the center of the LCD flashing. No other lights at all. ABS. battery, CEL, etc etc idiot lights are not on and oil and water temp are fine. Car is throwing no codes.

It is not related to the speed of the car, happens when the car is moving or sitting still.

This car does seem to run hot, in that the underhood bits are hot to the touch even if it has run for only a bit. I hear these cars run hot. Nearest Audi dealer is 60 miles away (Memphis).

Any ideas? Should I try to make it to Memphis to have them scan it? Anyone in Oxford, MS with VAGCOM mind showing me how it works? I want to order one eventually, if I can get this thing sorted and not just throw the money away.

As has been said, not quite. They're based upon the same platform but there are noticeable differences, particularly in interior dimensions. The S4 wagon is a few hundred litres less capacious than the R36 wagon of the same generation, and the cabin of the S4 is a bit smaller, too. The S4 has slightly greater wheelbase.

I'm not sure if that's changed much with the new S4 or will change much with the new Passat.

Call around and ask what the price for each job would be? Be sure to ask the price of the parts and the labor, individually.

For reference you can probably look up the part numbers to see what the cost would be for you to buy it--even if you don't do the work it will give you an idea how much the parts are being marked up.

Try and find a German specialist shop if you can, they'll be used to the procedure and can likely do it faster. Unfortunately with those two the cost is almost all labor.

When I got estimates for clutch, timing belt and water pump on my A4 the audi dealership quoted me more than double the next highest estimate- call around a bunch of shops, get quotes, and ask people you know in the area for suggestions on good mechanics.

Got a VAG-COM from Ross-Tech. My obdii reader showed nothing after a reset for the O2 sensor, but VAG-COM showed the following:

3 Faults Found:

16514 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1
P0130 - 35-10 - Malfunction in Circuit - Intermittent
17927 - Camshaft Adjustment; Bank 1
P1519 - 35-10 - Malfunction - Intermittent
16891 - Idle Control System RPM
P0507 - 35-10 - Higher than Expected. - Intermittent

Plus some codes for the alarm and HVAC which I don't think would give the three beeps.

I ordered a pre-cat O2 sensor. I figured the camshaft adjustment might be from the old head blowing up and reset all codes. No idea on the Idle control, but figured it was related to the old head as well and reset it. Right now I am hoping the new sensor will fix the beeping, unless anyone has any ideas?

Wife finally told me that she's starting to hear noises when braking which means this weekend I get to replace the front/rear pads and turn the rotors on my B7 A4.

Anyone have any tips and tricks that I should watch out for? I've changed brakes before and have guides here and here, though I think I'm going to try the 1st option and try to just get the entire caliper off and replace them that way.

I'm also going to try renting a caliper tool from O'Reily to do the rears and using this as my guide.

None of them seem that difficult though since it's my first time doing them on the Audi I'm sure I'll be cursing some Audi-tech who overtightened something.
