You drop a turd on the guy's hood before you leave, you're gonna come home to that same turd rubbed all over the doorknob to your house. Obviously he's gonna know who did it.

I've noticed a ton of people who don't know how to operate their headlights lately. Drove across town last night and probably saw 5 cars with just the parking lights on. And since when do people think it's acceptable to leave on the high beams because it's a divided interstate? Guess what- it's still bright and annoying. Probably the same people who think they're necessary to drive down a residential street at 25mph.

It should really be made mandatory for cars to have separate dashboard lights for headlights and parking lights. Although if you don't know your own car enough to know what all the switches and knobs do, then a separate little light probably won't help much either.

My question is, are there really that many situations where you need parking lights on but headlights off that we still need both settings?

The purpose of parking lights is to have a low power bulb that you can just leave on so people can see your parked car on unlit roads.

Well yeah. The problem I see if that it also turns on the instrument cluster lights so if you are driving down a well lit road it's easy to not realize the headlights aren't on. I can remember two times where I've gone to the parking lights while waiting for someone in a parking lot and then started driving down the street before I remembered my headlights were off.

DRLs plus the lit up space age dash of my 2004 Suzuki Aerio led me to be pulled over for no lights on at least twice. The only indication was that the radio lights weren't lit up and if you were leaving a bright place like a gas station it was hard to tell.

I ended up gooning up a button that made my car think the hand brake was up because it would turn off the DRLs when you did that for whatever reason.

One thing that really annoyed me about the Fiesta when I first bought it was that there is absolutely no indication inside the car that the headlights are on or off except for the position of the switch. The switch is in a location that you have to move to see it as well. I was coming from driving vehicles that either had automatic headlights with sensors, or where the dash lights were off unless the headlights (or at least parking lights) were on, and mostly both. I've gotten used to it over the years, but it still seems like a dumb design decision. Why do I need instrument cluster lights if it's light enough that I don't have the headlights on? Unless I'm driving through a tunnel, I can't even tell the cluster lights are on during the day. It's just weird.

Nthing the "gently caress DRLs/automatic lights & perma-lit cluster" sentiment. I fell victim to it over the winter when I switched my previous fleet car's (GM) automatic headlights off when I left it idling during the polar vortex horseshit in a city with a "no unattended idling vehicles" statute. Didn't realize I was just driving around with the DRLs on - being a fleet vehicle it had DRLs in addition to the automatic lights - until a cop lit me up with his spotlight while I was stopped at a red light. If you aren't used to switching them on and are driving in a well-lit area its really easy to do.The Locator posted:Why do I need instrument cluster lights if it's light enough that I don't have the headlights on? There are a lot of late-model cars that have text and/or pips on the gauges that are only visible when they're backlit - in my personal experience, first-gen MS3s are like this (with the key out you just have blank dials with needles), and I had a pair of second-gen Fusions between 2010 & 2012 that had illuminated pips that weren't visible without backlighting.

Anything above the base model Mazda3 has EL gauges, at least in the first gen.

I love my car as the gauge cluster is only lit up when the lights are on. Also, it's drab gray with the lights off and fun red and blue colors with the lights on. Makes me want to drive with the lights on all the time! (also the drab gray is kind of hard to read if it's not bright and sunny out, so you almost need to turn the lights on as soon as it's overcast or at dusk)

I've never failed to have my headlights on, powering them up is such a muscle memory habit I'll even do it in full daylight, smack myself in the head for being an idiot, then turn them back off. Not sure why a daylight sensor isn't standard equipment these days, cars should be smart enough to light up the road on their own when it gets dark.

I find the cars on the road with their headlights on are always easier to see even in full daylight so I turn my headlights on every time I get in my car. I don't see any reason not to.

So it would make sense to have always on cluster lights if they were needed like this, but in my case, there is no difference at all in what is visible or not when the lights are on vs. off, so the reasoning doesn't seem to be there. I suppose maybe some of the higher line versions of the Fiesta have some fancier dash that requires back-lighting to see, and they just made the lighting work the same on all of them, who knows.

My favorite thing about Volvos is the fact that Volvo did the intelligent thing and made it so that the headlights turn off when you turn the car off, so you can just leave the switch on forever. My mom's CR-V just beeps loudly at you when you take the key out with the headlights on. Why?!

This is pretty normal, I guess it's cheaper than wiring the lights so they lose power when the ignition is off? I suppose an annoying beep can be used for other things, like door open, seat belts, and key left in ignition with the door open and car shut off (all of which is standard in Toyotas these days, not sure about other makers).

My e30 and 2013 jetta tdi sportwagen? nope, the jetta beeps super loud at you and the e30 turns off the headlights, but not the parking/dash lights. At least I know that my e30 will happily sit in a parking lot for 8+ hours with the parking lights on while I am at the office and still start right up when I go to leave!

All the recent Fords I've driven have the headlights stay on no matter what if they're in the on position and chime at you when you open the door, and will have DRLs on in any position except Park. I leave my truck's lights on auto about 98% of the time and that does the job but sometimes I turn them on manually if I'm not sure if they're on or not but I really want them to be.
