This guy lives just down the road from my house, and 12 year old me always laughs when I see it. I wonder which came first, the plate or the company name?

That tattoo was more money than the car it's depicting. And it's a pretty bad tatt.

First cars are like first girlfriends: you can have all sorts of fun in them but for god's sake don't get their name tatted on your arm.

Hung out at the Pre-reunion this weekend. Here's the highlights. Oh yeah. Ferrari 512? Whatever it was it sounded amazing. Edit: Note he most certainly failed the broomstick test. Seems nobody gave a poo poo last weekend. E-Type parked in a bad neighborhood. Aurune fucked around with this message at 05:42 on Aug 11, 2014 |

I had a '94 Cavalier as a first car and I might still be in it if not for two separate incidents of people ramming the bright red car out of nowhere, poor girl was at like 140k and still trucking (admittedly, only because my dad had done quite a bit of work on it). When the family were all piled in the acceleration was a safety hazard, but that's pretty much exactly what you want in a starter car. The Neon is a much better car, and that's speaking as someone who owned a Cavalier for several years. The Cavalier puts up with a lot of neglect (Like, a lot. One of the girls in my social circle has a 500,000 km 97 Sunfire that's been through three engine fires and a brake failure on the highway) but on its best days it's still a miserable little penalty box that requires you to bring a lot of your own fun to it. That said, perhaps the awesome AI car poo poo is making a car that's tough enough. Guys at the drags used to pump dry 50-shots of nitrous into the pushrod 2.2s until they blew up (after crushing the FPR feed lines in a vise grip to increase fuel pressure and therefore richness), then bought a new one. This generation of GM wagons was amazing. My dad had an Oldsmobile Cutlass with the 3.3 I believe, very little rust or trademark GM decay for its age. 30mpg reliably, more space than some full size SUVs, plus the holy trinity: bench seats, column shift and a rear facing back seat. Unfortunately a combination of a careless Prius driver tweaking the bumper, no heat and a temperamental starter meant its service ended at just over 200k miles.

Station wagons in general own bones, I still can't figure out why minivans became the de-facto family car when a superior solution already existed. I effectively grew up in a custom cruiser from the 70's, my dad nursed that thing for almost 30 years before rust finally destroyed the frame. There was a point in the late 80's where he redid the interior and gave it a metallic green paintjob, even put chrome smoothies on all four corners. It looked loving mean.

Apparently they're using chassis numbers from the last 6 E-types that never made it off the production line on these new ones... That's pretty loving cool.

Cavalier chat. The only car I have ever totalled was an 85 Cavalier that an ex-gf grabbed the wheel and caused me to put into a guardrail at 55 Guess which person of the 4 in the car didn't go to the hospital. Also, guess which one was wearing a seatbelt.

Cavalier chat: Bought a '97 GT as a first car, dirt cheap, with the 2.4L in it. Nothing quite worked right, the shifter felt like a bucket of gravel and I was never sure if I was going to get 3rd or 5th, the clutch slave cylinder leaked (and was located inside the bell housing) so I had dot3 with me at all times, but it never left me stranded, never overheated, had enough power to be stupid with, carried 8+ people more than once, all my stuff to and from university... I had a lot of fun with that car. Also there were a million of them in junkyards so when someone broke off my antenna, smashed a mirror and a couple lights it was like 15$ and an excuse to explore a junkyard to fix. I'd never buy another one now, but it was a great first car.

Maybe we should just make another thread for Cavalier chat because clearly we've touched a nerve here. I had the OHV 2.2, if I had the 2.4 twin cam I probably wouldn't be here right now with the way I drove that car. If I drove this for my first car? Obliterated.

I said in IRC the other day, Cavaliers keep running out of spite. Everything will break, plastic will fall off, electrics die, all to make the driving experience as miserable as possible, but they will never just up and totally die until they have made you suffer.
