Since I'm riding in a standard sized car with 3 other people I can really only justify 2-3 games, so I'll save mirror matches in Yomi for online play, though I might bring Rook and Grave just to have in my pocket.

Assuming most of your GenCon wishes are "play a game," there's actually plenty of time. It gets messy when you start entering time-sensitive events or tournaments (Retro DBZ lasted over 8 hours two years ago), but otherwise it's actually not that bad.

Is there a link to bus routes/times somewhere? I'm 90% sure I'll be staying in a hotel that isn't in walking distance, and I'd rather not be constrained by my driver's schedule the whole weekend.

IndyGo is the bus service in town. I ride it everyday, but it's a bit poo poo and most routes stop running at 9:30. Uber or Lyft will be your friend after that. UberX is 25% at the moment!

Nope! This isn't DragonCon or ComicCon, where there are hugely popular guests that you have to wait in hours-long lines to (maybe) see.

Since event tickets at Gen Con are sold in advance, you'll pretty much know what you're getting into and won't have to wait in lines. Of course, a lot of things are sold out now, but there's plenty to do. Many events still have tickets available, and I know a lot of people who attend and never actually register for anything, but they still have a great time.

The only really bad lines are registration/will-call on Thursday and Friday mornings, and the line to get into the Vendor Hall each morning (especially Thursday). Those can both be avoid unless you absolutely, positively have to get into the vendor hall early to buy something.

So now that I'm packing way too many games, maybe there should be some more specific dates on when people can meet up to play some of them (i.e. justifying lugging this mess around); I'm worried just relying on groupme and stuff might not be enough. When would people be able to play? I'm free every day of the con except Thursday morning and evening (and leaving Sunday afternoon...).

I'm free most of the entire time. Only committed to the Jim Butcher Q&A, a True Dungeon on Thursday morning, and a different meet up on Sunday.

Other than that, I just plan on wandering around aimlessly, maybe slip into a few games with openings that pique my interest.

Lots of stuff on your list that I'd like to play (Archipelago, Zimbabwe, Roads & Boats, High Frontier). My GenCon buddy is a non-goon that isn't really into euros though and I don't want to ditch him too much, so I'll probably have to play my availability by ear. I'll stalk you in groupme and try to jump in some of your games though.

I would like to try Archipelago and Agricola. If you have the stuff with Xwing to teach a person how to play I'd be interested in trying that out too. My availability is pretty shaky but if you shoot me a message via text or the groupme I'll try my best to make it to whatever place at whatever time.

Well it sounds like Friday morning will be a good time to put a game in at least. Perhaps Archipelago?

My free times are late Wednesday (i.e. the day I drive into Indianapolis), afternoon Thursday, all of Friday and Saturday, and morning Sunday (i.e. before I leave).

Since some of these games have player counts and significant playtimes here's a list of ones that take a while and their player counts:
  • Archipelago [2-5 p] (short game is under 2h but longer games get longer)
  • High Frontier [2-5 p, best with 5] (4h without end-game module, probably 6h with)
  • Roads & Boats &cetera [2-6 p, better with less] (4h, maybe more)
  • A Distant Plain [pretty much 4 player only] (probably 6h?)
  • ~Pax Porfiriana [2-6 p] (never had a game go longer than 2h but hey you never know)
  • 18OE [3-7 p probably want 4 to 6](full game is implausible at the 10h mark, but a shorter scenario might play within reasonable time?)

Surprisingly games of The Great Zimbabwe--a hefty euro--are rather quick, with 2 player games taking as short as 30m and 5 player games lasting under 2h.

EDIT: I'm not going to pack Space Alert (a friend is bring his copy) and am probably going to leave Galaxy Trucker (Anniversary ed. is so loving big). Probably going to bring Splendor, Hive, and Dungeon Twister or Dungeon Twister Card Game though. I'll edit that giant list thing accordingly.

EDIT #2: List updated, added player counts for reference.

A lot of it is the infinite charisma of the main auctioneer Josh; he is infamous for being able to sell things worth $5 for like $50 by getting everyone laughing about the item. It is kind of like a nerdy religious revival, everyone getting together to reminisce about the treasures and crap of the nerd world of yesteryear. Plus the things being sold are often sort of hilarious in themselves, depending. Like a bag of sand, Star Trek branded coffee from the early 1990s, or a box of VHS tapes, many of which contained poorly-recorded pornography. To be fair that last one should not have been sold as it could not be fairly linked to The Hobby but it was hilarious anyway.

Disclaimer, I am one of the other auctioneers, though I have been in evangelizing T.O.V.A. since years before I joined up. And T.O.V.A. is why I volunteered.

:unsmith: I am glad to hear that you had a good time. And if you enjoyed the non-T.O.V.A. Auction that much, you are definitely a good candidate for enjoying that even more! I got hooked before knowing there were even separate sections, let alone that some sections were extra-amazing.

As for timing, the Auction actually goes until an undetermined time on Saturday night; the Charity Auction post-T.O.V.A. is the last event and it has gone past Midnight at times. Though overall their time management skill has increased dramatically over the past few years.

The whole thing goes down in the rooms across from the Exhibit Hall and closest to the convention center entrance nearest to the Hall.

Since we have a resident auction expert here, Quarex, can you place an absentee proxy bid on items? I am thinking for items in the showcase that are held for late Friday night. I have seen it done before but am pretty sure it was just for for auction staff who wanted something but knew they couldn't be there whenever it actually went on the block.

Not to snipe Quarex on an auction question, but yes, the Gen Con Auction allows proxy bids (on some things). Here it is in their FAQ; it looks like you just have to ask someone running the auction and they'll file your bid.
