Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

So I just picked up a passport hard drive for my Wii U and it recognized it when I plugged it in and asked me if I wanted to format it despite not using a Y-cable or whatever it is. That means I should only need the one USB port, right? :v:

Sounds right. This list pertains to Wii compatibility, but I imagine if it works with the Wii, it should work fine with the Wii U. Looks like WD Passports are generally good to go.

WD Passports seem pretty good, if the two posts above you are anything to go by. I grabbed a 1 TB one so I should be set for a good while. It also doesn't require a power supply or need two USB ports to garner enough power to it.

Are people hitting issues with third party games? I have NSMBU, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker, Shovel Knight, NES Remix 2, SMB2, and the Wonderful 101 demo, and I still have like half of my storage left.

Anything with its own power supply, that way you only have to be using one USB port at a time.

I'm using a 3 year old 2TB WD MyBook and its been working great.

Some games are stupidly huge. Like Tropical Freeze is something like 15GB.

Honestly the only thing stopping me from preordering this is that I really want to play it the night of release, so I'm buying digitally. (Plus with it just on my console I can always have Smash at the ready!)

I only own two downloaded games (Everything else is on disc,) but they're both really big. I just barely run out of room.

I got W101 shortly after it came out and played a bit then, a bit between then and now, and finally just sat down a few days ago to actually sink my teeth into it and enjoy.

But the more I play it, the more I get terribly frustrated and angry at it and hate it. :(

And I don't think the difficulty of the gameplay is a large part of my issue. I don't mind getting bronze medals and having to use continues on some bosses. But I don't understand SO MUCH of what's going on! The Unite Sphere sounds like it should be an upgraded dodge, but it moves slower than I do while holding Y and I'm not immune like I am during spring (plus, since spring is R and sphere is double-R, I keep accidentally starting it when I just want to spring a few times over). Why does every punch or sword swing take an entire Unite battery when I'm playing a single character? It runs me to nothing even while throwing only 1 or 2 punches between short bursts of dodging and dashing, which could be their intention but feels like I've screwed up. Why did that item just bounce out of the level and hover where I cannot go, taunting me?

And I have at least a handful more questions than that. So much tearing my hair out over this game.

Don't feel bad friend, W101 is very obtuse, moreso than your average Platinum game.

I honestly don't even know if I wanna play it more, the aesthetic and sentai thing is nice but the gameplay is abysmal.

The game is amazing and gives you all the tools you need to succeed and they all work near-flawlessly, it just doesn't tell you how to use any of them and also some of them it doesn't even tell you they exist at all.

As the other dude said, watch Chip's LP of it, he breaks down all the mechanics and explains them very well.

Just don't buy anything bigger than, say, a 500GB drive. The WiiU won't do partitions, it insists on formatting the whole thing, so buying a 1TB+ drive would be a real waste of money and hard drive space. Even 500GB is almost definitely too much (even if every game ran to 10GB, the WiiU isn't likely to get 50 must-have titles before end-of-life), but there's probably not a huge price difference between 300GB and 500GB these days, and you may as well have the extra for the small price increase.

I stole your post and put it in the Coupons thread about refurbished Wii U's because people have been asking what games are on the Wii U in there.

Also, Xenoblade Chronicles piqued my interest in this, so I went and looked at the E3 Treehouse thing for it. Holy Crap! That's another game added to my list that I didn't even know anything about. I have always associated Xenoblade with Xenogears and completely written it off because I do not like traditional RPGs. I had no idea it was an open world real-time action RPG.

Very true. Game also doesn't teach itself hardly at all beyond the basic inputs. Learning which attacks should be blocked v evaded, when to dump battery on multi-morphs, juggling, and getting good with custom blocks (ex Ukemi) definitely take a bit of time to ingrain.

I still get my rear end handed to me on most of the shmup sections.

So I was in the middle of playing Mario 3D World with my daughter and the console popped up a message saying the disc was dirty. It was a little smudged so I cleaned it up and put it back in, but then it said it was unreadable. I rebooted, and then it just shows up as "Invalid Disc." So I tried Mario Kart 8 - same deal. Not dirty at all.

Is my Wii U hosed? It won't seem to read any discs. Is this a known issue? Googling seems to show a load of people saying the same thing at launch, but I was wondering if it was a widespread, persistent thing or anything.

I was thinking about going back to the Wii library, but honestly, I have so much to play on the Wii U right now, that I'm going to hold off for a while until I get to a glut.

Edit: My backlog right now is -

-Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
-Most of Wind Waker HD
-Pikmin 3
-Half of Super Mario 3D world
-Half of NES remix 2
-Most of Mario Kart 8

And doesn't include Bayonetta 2 and Toad Treasure hunter when they come out.

Irrelevant anyway as I managed to secure a trade, 3D world for my W101 which I'm quite excited about as I've been itching to play 3D world for a long time.
