More like the author started out doing porn--which is a common thing in manga. I can think of other mangaka beyond the ones listed, including one who started out with some really hardcore poo poo and now does fluffy and cute manga.

"I didn't see the part where he develops as a character so I guess he never developed as a character"

Captain Invictus posted:

But Prison School is really good too. I've posted about it before, but it's basically the author, after having Devil Blues get cancelled, go "you want lowest common denominator smut, you horrible shitbags? Have all the censors will allow!" and made one of the most cynical, condescending, over-serious, absurd, insulting, borderline porn series out there. It actively rubs the smuttiness in your face, to the point where the vice-president's word bubbles point to her crotch, rather than her mouth. Where every character has the rationality and common sense of a plank of wood, but plays each and every situation 100% deadly seriously no matter how mindblowingly stupid it may be.

Prison School is not a good series, on its face. But when you learn a little bit of the history of the author's prior work and the result of it, it makes PS make so much more sense. It's also just really amusingly stupid at times, like the fantastic boobs-are-fake-butts page.

I dunno about you but personally I'd rather read a good story than a story that's ironically, subversively poo poo.

It's still poo poo.

That doesn't really change what I want to read. I mean I can respect that the To Love-Ru guy's personal life blew the gently caress up in the most insane way possible and he absolutely made the right personal decision to go hard[well, even harder] on the soft porn to make bank, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I'm not gonna knock anyone for making that move either, but making pandering ecchi bullshit for all the right reasons still leaves you with pandering ecchi bullshit at the end of the day.

The fact this dude is using the success of his pandering ecchi bullshit to go back and do something unique and interesting is cool though.

The To Love-Ru guy gets every pass in the world. What happened to him was nuts, and he was getting tons of poo poo online until he or someone else revealed the story and everyone backed off. Short story

- Author marries a woman he's crazy in love with, starts the series and designs the non-alien main harem girl after her
- Author and wife have a kid, the series starts to get really popular
- At some point the wife started an affair with some teenager she met online
- Wife basically up and leaves the author, takes the child and holds the child for ransom
- Author is freaking the gently caress out, still making his manga chapters on time, but he's almost falling apart
- Author more or less buys his child back from the wife, has to cancel the series because she was trying to claim 50% ownership because a character is based on her, this is a strenuous 6-8 month affair
- Ends up restarting/relaunching the series, as a new IP I'm not sure if his wife still has ownership or nit
- Author get his kid back, severs from the wife, can now only work on a monthly release because he's a full time parent

Here's the full story as clear as I can find it

quote:

The common consesus in the TLR threads is that, Yabuki had to quit because he can't be a full time mangaka for a weekly series and taking care of his little girl (she's three) at the same time (now that he has full custody).

Ataru was asking about how much TLR was Hasemi, Yabuki, and the editors... Well, according to the Manga Brain (a special section dedicated to interviews with a mangaka in WSJ), Yabuki usually discusses the story with Hasemi over the phone on Wednesdays, then spends half a day doing the preliminary draft on Fridays... Have another in-depth discussion with both the editor and Hasemi in the afternoon, and finish up the final product on Tuesday morning (Tuesday afternoon is his free time).

- There is this person called Nakamura Ine who is quite famous on the Nico Nico website (a large Japanese online community somewhat like Youtube), who turned out to be a minor (last year in high school) and also insinuated that he has something going on with a Kashiwagi Shiho.

- Now this Shiho was the wife of Yabuki Kentaro, the author of To-Love-Ru. She met Yabuki when he was looking for assistants, seduced him and ended up becoming his wife and gave birth to a daughter.

- But she hardly did any house work, neglected her daughter, and spent most of her days in front of a computer spending time in Nico Nico etc.

- January 2009, when Yabuki was sick with flu and bedridden, she kidnapped her own daughter and disappeared, and it turned out that she left her daughter at her parents' place while she was doing this and that with Ine.

- February 2009, Yabuki 'begged' Shiho to return for the sake of their daughter, and Shiho did return to Tokyo, but few days later she dropped out once again with the girl, this time taking a notebook computer and Yabuki's credit cards. Yabuki later stopped the cards, but a large sum of money was already taken out.

- Yabuki looked for them everywhere, but to no avail. March 2009, Shiho demanded a divorce on the grounds of personality clash and a large chunk of Yabuki's assets, but when the evidence of her infidelity was discovered on her computer, she then changed her stance and demanded money in exchange for the custody right of the daughter.

- Realizing it would take over a year to settle things, Yabuki accepted her conditions and got the daughter back.

- Haruna Sairenji was based on Kashiwagi Shiho, and there is a reason why her role was reduced dramatically since volume 13, and Yui getting more prominent. And apparently Shiho has sued/demanded more money for the character of Haruna recently.

- A comment of Yabuki's while this was all happening:
[While I was working hard on a manga that was focused on taking young girls' panties off, another man was taking my wife's panties off.]

- I forgot to mention that following the dispute over Haruna's character right, Yabuki feared his daughter getting hurt by all the debacle, so he accepted Shiho's demand yet again and ended the series prematurely.

Nakamura Ine, the famous guy in the horse mask performing music on nico, has admitted on his blog that he had extramarital relations with Kashiwagi Shiho, the wife of ToLoveru artist Yabuki Kentarou. On his blog he apologizes deeply once more to Yabuki and also to all that have been affected by this.

Kashiwagi Shiho had started getting in touch with the musicians on nico douga and got to know Nakamura Ine among others, and she had collaborations with them by helping them draw the art for the music they post up (under the handle name of Ume).

Kashiwagi and Yabuki are apparently now currently divorced since early this year (the extramarital relations happened before the divorce) and Yabuki has the custodial rights to their 3 year old daughter.

It will air for general broadcast with half the screen taken up by bars of white light and/or steam, with the AT-X and BD versions uncensored and selling like hotcakes on the day the Zimbabwe dollar stabilizes.

welp goodbye Tokyo Ghoul. you were never a particularly good manga anyway, but I swear it feels like someone else took over the series at some point in the manga. dude just got tortured into having eight pack abs and goth nails and rad hair I guess and now the little girl character is starting to spout that ONI CHAN stuff and I'm just like PEACE. Like, it was never that nuanced but I swear she was just a normal little girl character and his emotions were way less hackneyed and teen girl fanfic and then it's like...

I can actually pinpoint the exact pages, it was perfect because suddenly the translations got fittingly lovely as the manga finally went full retard. Not that it was ever that great, but comparing this poo poo to the initial couple chapters is weird. finally i can stop reading this dumb manga, which is a good thing since I was barely grasping all the dumb plots and characters over the last 20 chapters or so.
Gotta catch up on Arslan Senki, Boys on the Run, Crime and Punishment, Destroy and Revolution, Montage, All Rounder Meguru, Sengoku Youko....wow even Shamo...

I pretty much stick exclusively to Twisted Hel Scans's releases for that reason. Which means I'm behind by some chapters, but I don't have to deal with those other groups' lovely translations (and it's not as if Twisted Hel actually dropped the chapters, there're just random people leaping ahead of them and releasing often literally random chapters).

That said, while I haven't found Tokyo Ghoul bad enough for me to drop it yet, there are better series out there and if it came down to a choice between keeping up on it and keeping up on those other series, I'd pick the other series in a heatbeat. I might just make this choice eventually.
