Just Terminators, Power Armor and some vehicles and dreadnoughts. There's the Dread-knight, but that thing really needs conversion work before it sees the table. Jesus... The Inquisitors at least gave them something interesting and unique on the table top.

Wait, so, like, are the Dan Abnett books actually good? Not like "better than the other ones" good? I've never read anything by him (and had no idea he even wrote so much god drat poo poo - just checked out his wiki page), but everyone raves about them. It can be really hard to tell what "good" means in the context of spin-off fiction because some people will just lovingly read anything that has their favorite mary sue in it. Also, how is the Salamanders omnibus?

Frankly after seeing what happens when they try to add new models for the sake of new models--namely it either becomes a giant bogeyman or is a ridiculous piece of crap that nobody wants, or various worst-of-both-worlds combinations--it'd be pretty refreshing, from a certain standpoint, to see some codices that are only rules tweaks. I mean at least we don't have the Purifierfang dreadnought marching to battle alongside Kaldor Draigo's chariot made from the bones of a thousand brutally tortured nuns.dichloroisocyanuric posted:Wait, so, like, are the Dan Abnett books actually good? Well, I mean he's not John Updike or anything, but his fiction in the past 5+ years is legitimately well written, IMO. (His stuff from the earlier parts of the 2000s is more into the "better than the other ones" category, but still noticeably above the other ones; we're not talking 'edges out Nick Kyme' here.)

If you haven't yet, read Abnett's "Eisenhorn" trilogy (Xenos, Malleus and Hereticus I believe; there's also an omnibus with some short stories in it as well). He basically took one of the characters from the short-lived "Inquisitor" game and used him to flesh the hell out of the Imperial Inquisition. They're really good, entertaining reads.

I mean at least we don't have the Purifierfang dreadnought marching to battle alongside Kaldor Draigo's chariot made from the bones of a thousand brutally tortured nuns. This is a fair point. But if there was any codex army in need of some new, interesting stuff it was the Grey Knights. With the Inquisition being made into its own mini codex, the Grey Knights are really bare bones. Its basically Storm Bolter Space Marines with a Souped-up Psyker phase at this point. I fear the Draigo chariot as much as anyone, but at least give us something. I really want Grey Knights to be incredible and very expensive point wise as it fits better, personally that is. A single squad of Grey Knight terminators appearing on the battlefield should have some weight and gravitas to it. Making them just a different flavor of Space Marines is just disappointing and lazy, especially considering the fluff.

Dembski-Bowden is the better author. He could easily be doing his own original stuff in the mainstream if he wanted. The Night Lords trilogy is by far and away the best thing BL has ever published. As for the Salamanders stories, they are written by Nick Kyme for the sole reason that he is/was the editor at BL and therefore didn't have anyone to say no to him. Nick Kyme is not an author. Nick Kyme is a person who knows what words are and can recognise them in order but that is about it. Look at the poo poo that gets past him as an editor, he clearly thought "this poo poo's easy, look at the stuff we publish, I can do better than that."* Instead he should have been thinking "gently caress me, I'm publishing Ben Counter, maybe I shouldn't do that." In short, do not read the Salamanders omnibus. *He actually can't, the only thing that raises him above Henry Zou is that Kyme isn't a plagiarist. Yes, I do know the actual percentages but I rounded down on the 16.6666 and the 83.33333 Let me know what you think and whether it should be resized because I can do that. HiveCommander posted:I said halve the options, not the models in each box. We'll probably find that they've changed the weapon sprues around so that you only get one Psycannon in the GKSS box (for the 10 models in there) and 2 in the Purifier box (for 5 models) since there's really no other compelling reason to buy the 5-man box if a full squad one exists. It works for SMs because you can use combat squads to pad out Devastators, but the GK Devastator equivalent is build out of the exact same plastic kit anyway. For a lot of armies I would be pretty fine with this- the Eldar codex, for example, actually had a good diversity of units and simple tweaks and alterations to solidify their different roles and make them all useable could absolutely have worked. (Not that I mind the new units or anything.) But as pointed out already, GK are really anemic in terms of both total number of units, diversity of units, and diversity of options. They have three vehicles that are in every other Marine book, three different varieties of the same power armored guys with the same weapon options and two varieties of Terminators that have the same weapon options as everyone else. Almost the entire book can be condensed down to 3+ or 2+ save, one Attack or two, and that's it, that right there describes every non-character unit they have. Inquisition stuff went a long ways towards breaking that up, because you got a different type of HQ and a really customizable squad that could do lots of different things (rather than just the "Psycannons and Force Weapons" that is every other model in the range), which helped things feel less same-y over all.

I'd love to see a new weapon type in there, preferably something similar to the old Pathfidner Rail Rifle (S8 AP3) or even an anti-tank rifle (S8 AP1 Lance for instance) as maybe something limited to Prugation squads to break up the monotony of GKs having the same dudes with the same weapon options in different FOC slots. It'd also patch up the their weakness to vehicles and AV13/14 spam and actually gives them solid ranged anti-tank options that aren't a 200+ point flyer or transport.

GK plastics came out only a couple years ago. They're not getting redone and I doubt there will be any real new weapon options for them.

But in all the tournaments you are limited to one additional detachment, so it's an "x, y and z, pick two" scenario and why pick Inquisition or Assassins as your second detachment when you could take IG instead? I'd prefer to have a decent toolbox of options to deal with various threats in the one book, not having to resort to allies to make the book functional or even near what it used to be, unless we see some huge buffs to Psycannons (which are probably changing to Salvo weapons anyway). ghetto wormhole posted:Whaaa? So, thanks for the interest, those of you who showed interest. Here's a quick picture of some PPDC (from Pacific Rim!) dice I made, just as an example. I'm used to selling these things in pairs, since HeroClix is a 2d6 game, but I understand you guys use... lots of dice, all at once? How many dice would you want to buy in a set? If they're $5 a die (so $10 a pair, $25 for 5, etc.), does that kick the price point too high? Also, what's a good roll for you guys, 1 or 6? I figure you want to see the logos when something good happens.
