1970's adaptation of the classic French novel Sans Famille. It can be depressing at times but a lot of people consider it a classic. It's about a wandering kid searching for family, both real and metaphorical. If animation quality is a dealbreaker for you, just skip this one and buy the book for ten bucks on amazon or something.

Is this Remi / Nobody's Boy? Because if the Latin American broadcast didn't change much, holy poo poo this can be depressing as all hell. This felt like "misery porn" at times.

Yeah basically. AFAIK the latin American/Filipino broadcast cut like a third/half of the series out much of which was the more uplifting parts. It's pretty long (51 eps) and so not all of it is as depressing as you would think, unlike say Grave of the Fireflies it ends on a happy note (a little bit of a Dues Ex Machina but still).

The thread gave me some pretty amazing recommendations last time around, so I defer to your wisdom once again.

This time I'm looking for anime/manga that centers around or prominently features family. Genre doesn't matter much to me, so anything from Yotsuba and Usagi Drop to Stardust Crusaders would fit the bill. Hinamatsuri is another example with the father-daughter relationship between the two main characters. Something with a bad rear end parent as the lead or the kid(s) setting out for the sake of their family would be pretty great, too!

I'd like to avoid anything horribly depressing like Grave of the Fireflies. And Oreimo. For the love of God nothing like Oreimo. :gonk:

The Eccentric Family is super duper great for this. You should watch it; it's by the same author as Tatami Galaxy.

I'd like a funny anime, preferably one on Crunchyroll since I've got a membership and can watch on my phone. I'm currently watching Monthly Girl's Manga and Haikyuu!! (less for the sports and more for the funny)

Nichijou is on Crunchyroll as My Ordinary Life, so definitely watch that. It take a bit to get into it's rhythm, but there are moments that are completely amazing.

It was licensed by ADV back in the day, so might be somewhere in Section 23's vault but they haven't reached into that for years.

If you desperately gotta have a DVD Fatpack, Madman Entertainment in Australia re-released Azumanga Daioh a few years back for $50AU, and they export to the US. No idea what the shipping costs are like though.

So I'll give this recommend me an anime a shot, I only recently got back into it a few months ago and I'm lost. There's a lot of good shows that've come out in the last five years that I've missed.

I watch a lot of anime with my girlfriend and we're looking for something along the lines of Haruhi or Space Dandy, something that isn't depressing at any point and has english dubs available. We're just about done with Haruhi so something similar?

For myself I recently finished Toradora and enjoyed it a lot and I'm looking for something similar. But for background, before that I watched and sort of enjoyed Kill la Kill and I have a secret love for shows most people hate (don't judge) like SAO, Spice and Wolf, iDOLM@STER, Oreimo (season one, let's pretend season two doesn't exist).

The thing about it being one of the best shows in recent memory is true, though. A drat fine show. From that year, probably only PenguinDrum and Steins;Gate come close to being as amazing as this baby. Madoka too, I guess.

Thanks for the Level E encouragement! First two episodes were okay. Let's see where else this crazy train goes.

Now, I have a couple of questions, but first, I think I need to make a confession: Ever since my niece started living with me, she's been getting along with all the kids her age in the apartment complex and she... well, thanks to them, she's been getting into Twilight.

I mean, I understand: She's 14 and sort of into literary fiction, so of course she was going to run into Twilight sooner than later. Apparently, one of her friends who's just as much of an anime enthusiast as she is told her that Strike the Blood is basically a Japanese version of Twilight. Now, I have yet to see / read anything about this series, but because I find myself having a somewhat morbid fascination with what a Japanese version of Twilight might contain, I ask you: Is this true? Is Strike the Blood seriously a :japan:-flavored version of Twilight?

And the more important question: Am I a failure as a guardian for allowing this to happen? :negative:

Far as I could tell from the episode I watched, Strike the Blood was a generic light novel action-y thing that happened to have a vampire.
