What a fantastic episode. Tenzin's fate is up in the air, but I'm hoping he's going to be held as a bargaining chip.

Thinking about the lavabending etc the show has given us, I can't help but feel the 'advanced' techniques need some adjustment.

Water -> Ice
Air -> Lightning
Earth -> Metalbending
Fire -> Lavabending

Of course the airbender would have to manipulate some clouds to generate the lightning.

It's been said a lot, but lava bending fits with Earth for the same reason steam and ice being fit with Water. It's just a state change. It'd make less sense for it to be a Fire thing.

She was a sword glinting in the depths of night, a lance of light piercing the darkness. There would be no mistakes this time.
Especially since we, like, repeatedly see Ghazan just bending plain old earth.

In other notes, lots of people have brought up how cool it was to see Tenzin and Zaheer finally fight it out. What's interesting is that despite it being the first Airbender vs. Airbender fight ever shown, Tenzin and Zaheer have pretty different bending styles. Zaheer uses a lot of... almost capoeira style kicks where he's kicking with both legs while supporting himself with one or both arms. It's definitely different than how we've seen Aang or Tenzin move, whick makes sense.

Zaheer uses airbending to strengthen his regular martial arts skills. Tenzin literally weaponizes the air. It was almost comedic and it's a shame they didn't show more of Zaheer struggling just to dodge while Tenzin schooled him.

It was surprising at how easily Tenzin was swarmed by the other Red Lotus. It looked like without the explosions acting like strategic artillery he could've held off the other 3 for a bit.

God drat I just watched the new episode and wow that was definitely some story progression. Good to see Tenzin being badass and not being taken down instantly like season 1. I felt bad for Bumi though thinking how he would've been having a hard time facing such a competent Lava Bender when he himself is just a novice Air Bender..

It's a shame it came to a predictable ending of 4vs 1, but it was nice to see Zaheers smugness wiped off his face for a while as he struggled to keep up with Tenzin. Really hope he hasn't been killed, but the whole "I'll fight to the last breath" thing makes me just remember Zaheer's method for killing the earth queen, could be epic foreshadowing..

I'm glad this show is good again, finally. And to think the only reason I know it exists is because I still had the old thread bookmarked when it was locked. :v:

I'm really surprised Zuko didn't know about Iroh. They were basically father & son, so I assumed it was Zuko, Aang, and Iroh meet up, and Aang was like "You're a totally cool dude I'll show you how to separate your spirit from your body." I guess he just Qui Gon Jinn'd it though.

It probably never occurred to Zuko that he would need to go to the spirit world.. Aang may of never of come in contact with Iroh there either.

I know I'm awfully late to the party but I have just been browsing through Avatar wiki and found out that Mai actually broke up with Zuko shortly after the end of the war. I never read Avatar comics, maybe they explain that better, but it greatly diminishes the effect of the whole 'I love him more than I fear you' bit.

Plus, who's the mother of the present Fire Lord(ess), then? Does Zuko reproduce asexually?

All that is from the comic which has a 99% chance of returning to status quo once all is said and done.

Honestly, if it doesn't happen in the show, it's probably just something to ignore. (This applies to all television shows and all spin-off comics, not just Avatar.)

It's also implied in the comic itself that they'll probably get back together again. But I agree, the comics are dumb and you should ignore them; the explanation they come up with for what happened to Zuko's mom is especially stupid.

ASK ME ABOUT BEING ALLERGIC TO POSITIVITY

Zuko's mom never being resolved was the bravest loving writing in the series. I know they originally wanted to have a series of TV films to answer questions and tell one off stories but by having Zuko ask that question they basically set the mood for the final scenes as being triumphant but sombre. These characters are going to continue, there stories aren't over and the world will need rebuilding. It was awesome.

I rewatched the whole air nation siege, and I think Kai screwed up. He should have gone behind the airship, where P'Li had no chance of hitting him, and then tried to knock the airship hard enough that P'Li (who is perched right up to the edge) would fall over. Even if he didn't succeed in knocking her off, she would be distracted by having to avoid falling off the edge, and Kai would still be in a much safer position than flying in her line of sight.

Then again, considering how weak the gust was that he hit P'Li with, he might not be strong enough to pull it off. Time to earn those tattoos, Jinora!

Wasn't that sort of accidental, though? As in, they did want to provide an answer, but they found it unsatisfying/had too little time to fit it in, or something?

The one thing that felt a bit "bad" to me here -- the one single thing in midst of a completely awesome episode -- is that there was whole bit about them not being able to contact the Northern Air Temple and it just turned out the reason was that...welp, they just weren't paying attention to calls for some reason. Like, the gently caress were you all doing the whole day? Where did all your slaves acolytes go? It just felt a little contrived, like they needed a reason that the airbenders couldn't evacuate in time, except there was no reason that they could evacuate on time until you brought up the reason they couldn't!.....
:supaburn:

I've heard a tin hat theory that I've not immediately written off that explains this. Suyin and Opal, and indeed all/the majority of Zafou are members of the Red Lotus. Opal disappears after the Red Lotus threatens her life (she isn't in any other group airbender shot), and there has to be a fifth person in the Red Lotus at this point to be driving the airship. Also, Zafou's socialistic/communistic community can be seen as another interpretation of Zaheer's and the Red Lotus' philisophy.

Huh, I just checked the ep and you're right. It was a full moon night during The Southern Raiders when Katara bloodbent the wrong guy. Either way, my point that Katara took control of her blood back from Hama stands, and it's odd that even on nights of the full moon in prison Ming Hua never bloodbent since she's clearly very powerful.

Silynt posted:

Ming Hua probably wouldn't have been able to bloodbend in prison because, IIRC, it has always been shone to use very heavy hand and finger movements to control the blood. Maybe one of the Season 1 bloodbenders didn't need to but if so I can't remember it.

All the bending forms are heavy on various arm and hand movements, including waterbending, but that doesn't appear to have stopped Ming Hua at all. And no, Amon, Tarlok, and Yakone didn't need any movement to bloodbend -- it was psychic bloodbending, which is why it was so insidious.

Maybe Ming-hua has a moral objection to bloodbending. Who knows, right? She also might just not have the knack for it. It's a difficult and specialised technique.

Thinking on it for a second, given the whole Red Lotus "absolute freedom through anarchy" thing, invasive body control might be just the kind of technique they'd consider disgusting and inimical. They don't seem like hypocrites.

That's pure speculation of course. Still, fun to think about!

Bloodbending itself, if you watch various practitioners, seems to require precise hand/finger movements that Ming-hua may not be capable of doing.

Sure, all other bending types HAVE forms that require arm use, but they all also have forms that can be performed with just leg movements. Bloodbending, other than when performed by the family with a uniquely dangerous genetic affinity for it, has exclusively been shown to involve a grasping motion with the hands. Ming-hua doesn't have hands.

Also, wasn't her cage suspended out away from people? Maybe she was just too far away.

Because Bumi is a soldier and everyone else in the air temple is a civilian or child. Tenzin was also probably acting on instinct and went for the people he could most easily trust who were not his own children.
