Still, yeah, putting him in the "Latin" sphere would be a hugely misleading oversimplification.

alright nerds i would like to play a strategy game. i was really into eu2 in high school. i am now a 27 year old person who has not played grand strategy since then. what is the game for me. is paradox for me? is it for anyone?

Paradox games can be rewarding, but their learning curve is wall-like and their UI is dismal. I was really excited to learn Crusader Kings II and stuff but then I tried playing them.

Paradox games still own but don't get hoi3. Eu4, vicky2, ck2 and darkest hour(hoi2 spin off) are fantastic E: also a good chunk of paradox Devs are goons and post in the paradox thread regularly. CK2 is incredible, and Paradox's support for their games has actually gotten pretty good. It has that human element from The Sims, but with way more murder.

I just keep firing up EU4 and finding it so dull compared to CK2. I was tinkering with a mod to improve some parts of EU4, but I never made much progress on it because it's really all about painting the map your country's color and that's booooring after thousands of hours wasted on Paradox games.

CK2 is the most fun because it can go off the rails pretty quickly and the characters give it a lot of flavour. EU4 is a bit more dry, but pretty fun too. (I'm terrible and still can't beat the English as Scotland)

I have never heard of crusader kings and I have no idea what Vicky and HOI see short for. Is it Civilizations? That always looked like a game I would enjoy but never actually played. Now I'm too old and employed and married to dedicate the time to these things

Vicky is short for Victoria, a series of games set partly in the Victorian age (game span:1836-1936). Hoi is short for hearts of iron, a series of ww2 games from 1936 to whenever you give up because they never handle the Cold War even decently. They're basically Risk with economic and diplomatic stuff added in.

i'm an ancient baby and so haven't tried vicky 2 yet. i played years of vicky revolutions and just now installed the VIP stuff so i'm enjoying the extras for the first time people say vicky 2 is better but i don't wanna go through another six months of learning how an in-game economy works

What's funny about the West Wing is that even when Sorkin is writing Republicans he can't make them too stupid. Of the prominent Republican characters on the show, none are evangelical and all are sensible and appropriately quippy, and then, when Santos, the Obama analogue, is running in the final season, he's never really targeted for racist attacks. That optimism was clearly destroyed in the Newsroom, but it's interesting to see.
