What does all this make Portugal and Germany?

Eh, but Germanic mixed with Celtic and Latin roots - which is what the Franks were and kind of what eventually became "the French," anyway. I like to think that without Charles, the Germans would still have been Germans, but the French would not have been French.

Well, to be fair, the lines between Latin and Catholic German cultural groups were pretty blurry by that point in time. Which is not to say they were the same - far from it - but there was plenty of overlap. Particularly in the person of Charles, who probably would have identified as a citizen of Christendom first and foremost. Still, yeah, putting him in the "Latin" sphere would be a hugely misleading oversimplification.

Yeah, well, he certainly was no less Roman than a lot of emperors from the 3rd century onward, that's for sure.

Paradox games can be rewarding, but their learning curve is wall-like and their UI is dismal. I was really excited to learn Crusader Kings II and stuff but then I tried playing them.

On the contrary, in the two decades prior to World War One, Germany had been expanding its navy precisely so it could acquire overseas colonies. It's where the "we have conquered for ourselves a place in the sun" quote came from.

eu4 and ck2 (eu4 is a bit simpler so start there)

I just keep firing up EU4 and finding it so dull compared to CK2. I was tinkering with a mod to improve some parts of EU4, but I never made much progress on it because it's really all about painting the map your country's color and that's booooring after thousands of hours wasted on Paradox games.

2. communist nations have the best flags
3. socialist and communist parties have the best political polices

I guess you could say that sometimes the path to irony is paved with gold.

While this is a popular thought, its not necessarily correct. What bankrupted Spain was the fact that the Habsburg territories in Europe were financed with taxes from one provence in Spain. The inflation occured due to the Habsburg inability to pay its debts, and its continual need to refinance its loans. Most of the gold and silver imported to the continent wound up in possession of non-Habsburg lenders, who then used their influx of hard currencies to finance rebellions in Habsburg territory.

CK2 is a medieval dynasty simulator in which your gay viking dwarf king of the Danes can raid Rome and burn down St. Petersburg in order to help build an empire that can withstand the Aztec invasion of Europe in the 1300s.

Vicky is short for Victoria, a series of games set partly in the Victorian age (game span:1836-1936). Hoi is short for hearts of iron, a series of ww2 games from 1936 to whenever you give up because they never handle the Cold War even decently. They're basically Risk with economic and diplomatic stuff added in.

What's funny about the West Wing is that even when Sorkin is writing Republicans he can't make them too stupid. Of the prominent Republican characters on the show, none are evangelical and all are sensible and appropriately quippy, and then, when Santos, the Obama analogue, is running in the final season, he's never really targeted for racist attacks.

That optimism was clearly destroyed in the Newsroom, but it's interesting to see.
