I don't think anyone HAS done better than Doom or System Shock 2 honestly. Doom still has an active community after 20 years and Bioshock wasn't anywhere near as good as SS2.

there actually is a new doom game coming out relatively soon, by the way. announced at quakecon and all that. named after quake, another game they made that was really successful. and, you know, there's been a pretty large modding community for doom 1 and 2 up until now that'll probably live on a good while longer as well. i'll go tell them that someone who has never heard of doom before until earlier today and posts bad dota 2 replays said that doom is actually really bad and they shouldn't play it anymore so maybe they'll do something more productive instead. like make call of duty games, i guess. everyone play DoomRL, by the way. it's rad.

There isn't going to be a doom 4, for the same reason there won't be a Rogue 2, a System Shock 3, a Warcraft 4, or a new Baldur's Gat. The series is dead, and no-one wants to build on such a shoddy foundation. Hell, this is why the best roguelike is Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and the only good Pokemon game is the 3D one that added hats.
