Gonna get my Trek on. Your mileage may vary but this is my general understanding and I'm standing by it: * Star Trek II and VI are legitimately great movies. Not god-tier, but great enough that you should watch them even if you truly hate Star Trek otherwise. * Star Trek IV and Galaxy Quest are two of the best sci-fi comedies ever made. IV isn't very laugh-out-loud funny but it's still a lot of fun unless you have a stick up your rear end, and Galaxy Quest is so good that it's considered all but officially a Star Trek movie. * Star Trek: First Contact is flawed as all get-out but if we're letting Chronicles of Riddick and Hunger Games up on the list then it deserves to be there too. Worf cuts off a Borg's arm in space! * Star Trek: The Motion Picture isn't terribly good but it's also a weird middle ground between a classic Star Trek episode and a 2001 knock-off, so that might be your thing. * Star Trek III is really middling and average. It ain't bad, but it ain't that good neither. Doesn't belong on any best-of lists and should only be watched if you really want to know how the Enterprise crew ended up on a Klingon Bird of Prey for Star Trek IV. Even David's death (spoilers for a 30 year-old movie) is very skippable, since all you need to know is that Klingons killed him and Kirk was upset about it. * Star Trek V, Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis are all varying degrees of terrible and shouldn't be watched. Period. V was at least trying to do something innovative, but Generations was two hours of the production team making GBS threads the bed under horrible deadlines and other constraints, Insurrection is positively insulting in its text let alone subtext, and Nemesis is just a boring attempt to re-do Wrath of Khan. * The reboot movies are ok but they'll never be confused with great sci-fi, or even great action movies.
