Grizzled Patriarch posted:So regardless of the combat, which I've heard is like the worst in the series, is Downpour actually a scary game? I really liked Silent Hill 1-3, liked the first half or so of 4, and played through Homecoming even though I can't remember a single scary thing happening in that game. I never got around to Downpour, but the news about Del Toro / Kojima teaming up has me really excited, so I thought it might be worth checking out. It has a lot of "haunted house" or "amusement park" type scary sequences where you're essentially moving on rails (sometimes literally) through a creepy setpiece, but it mostly isn't actually scary except for a couple particularly effective scenes / enemies that stand out. I'd maybe put it on the scariness level of the non-apartment sections of Silent Hill 4. That said, if you were willing to put yourself through Homecoming, Downpour is head and shoulders above it in terms of enjoyability and memorable bits.

Apparently Atari is releasing two games this autumn, a new Haunted House, and Alone in the Dark: Illumination. drat it all, they hurt me so bad with Alone in the Dark 2008, but I'm still excited. I love me some Alone in the Dark. Edit: Here's a link. From Atari themselves, and here's the teaser site: aitd.com. catlord fucked around with this message at 05:01 on Aug 20, 2014 |

Watching an LP of Five Nights at Freddy's and holy poo poo that fox thing. Seeing it's room empty, and then switching quick enough to see it literally sprint to the security booth is pretty goddamn freaky.

In case everyone forgot, Norman Reedus and Guillermo del Toro worked together before, on Blade 2.

Is there a good LP of Five Nights that doesn't have a total retard mugging for a face cam? I tried to watch "Markiplier" and it was horrendous. I'm curious about how the game works but I don't want to buy it.

I found NukemDukem's video to be the least irritating, he doesn't have a shtick of being a giant scared rear end in a top hat all the time. Problem is that he doesn't finish the last night. Another decent one is HarshlyCritical. He does everything, but I only watched his final couple videos.

Is there any way to play Five Nights on a mac? I remember being terrified by those horrible creepy looking Chuck E Cheese animatronics as a kid. Seeing pictures of the game brought back some of those memories. I want to play it.

He's a little high strung at times, but he seems like a chill dude and doesn't get all fakey pretend scared and pull stupid faces and scream about rape or any of that. And maybe it's just the way he talks or his colorful language, but watching him play was like watching a young Louis C.K. get pissed off at creepy robot animals. Also holy poo poo does the game gently caress with you later on. I've only played the first night so far (owned the game like two or three days now), and I don't know if my heart could even take nights 4 and up. I spent the last hour of the first day with both doors sealed tight because gently caress that poo poo.

I'm surprised this thread likes Five Nights at Freddy's so much. It does a decent job of building atmosphere with the creepy animatronics and lonely setting but it tosses it all out the window with a terrible jump scare and cranked volume.

He's a cool dude.

I think a big part of the horror to me in Freddy's was also what the phone guy says they do when they catch you. Apparently they think you're an endoskeleton without its suit on, so they stuff you into a costume, which is filled with crossbars and wires and other sharp metal parts and such, and the only thing that's left of you is your eyes and teeth. Maybe it's just my imagination playing it up a bunch, but jesus that sounds loving terrifying. It's a good game if you just turn the logical part of your brain off and soak in the atmosphere.

I haven't played the game but what I've seen nothing really happens Day 1 but things escalate too quickly Day 2. A quarter of Day 1 is listening to a too-long phone call. It's a really tough game to demo. Maybe a special demo level should have been produced just to show off the game itself. That HarshlyCritical guy is the best, though. He starts off really snarky and not liking the game. Then he gets to day 2...

Although I concede that maybe the game would be even better if they took out the screeching when they reach your booth. I think a better choice of sound cues there would be like a garbled robot voice going "I wanna be your friend!" or "It's me!" or "LET'S EAT" depending on the character, and maybe the sound of servos whirring.

Something ain't right with those hell-puppets. Also I suspect more and more lately that people don't actually know what a "jump scare" is. It's a scare. It's a thing that scares you. Do not deride it in an attempt to belie your cowardice.

Brackhar posted:What is the mechanic here? Does staring at the animatronics stop them from moving? Or are you just looking at the cameras to understand when you need to close the doors? The second one, I think, with the exception of Foxy, who will just lose his loving mind and run straight for you if you don't check up on him enough. The other puppets just kind of wander, growing closer and closer to your doors. You need to slam them shut as late as possible (at which point the puppets just wander off again), because having them closed drains your power faster and when you run out Freddy shows up and takes you out. You still get about a fifteen-second grace period before he chums you, though, so it's possible to run out of power and still win if you're right at the end of the night. No, because jump scares are by nature unexpected and without context. The full-screen puppet-scream is literally what you are playing the entire game to avoid, and what you monitor the cameras to prevent. If you keep track of the puppets' movements, you'll know when one of them is close enough to face-munch you upon lowering your camera viewer. Hell, it's even possible to know when you're hosed in advance, because the doors and lights stop working when one of the puppets has gotten in. edit: poo poo, hit the wrong button Oxxidation fucked around with this message at 19:13 on Aug 20, 2014 |

Except the first time the bunny or bird get to you you have no idea how it will happen(all you know is that something is wrong but not what). It works as a jumpscare. Hell the first time with the pirate cove guy I had no idea what or how it could happen and I was simply listening to the phone call. Foxy just popped in. Doesn't matter how it is set up, I didn't see it coming so it worked as a jumpscare.

Brackhar posted:Wasn't one of the iterations of Alone In The Dark actually good? I vaguely remember it being the PS3 version, but I'm not sure... Yeah, the PS3 version came out later and had a ton of improvements, such as checkpoints during the super long, super buggy driving section with the fantastic music, and the game pausing when you checked your inventory, bug fixes, and even a whole new section of gameplay. I heard that those were supposed to get back ported to the 360 and PC versions, but for whatever reason they never did (either not enough people bought the PS3 version, or Microsoft said the patch was too big so they just scrapped everything, I dunno). Yeah, if you're going to get a copy of the game, get the PS3 version. It has the subtitle 'Inferno.' I never got to play it (I held out for an update to the PC version), but I hear it is a definite improvement over the initial release. Of course, that's not exactly hard, so whether it's actually good is up for debate, I hear it's at least playable.
