Going by the Nickelodeon forums, I'd expect that most of the people who visit the site (to do anything but watch episodes) are preteens. I'm not really worried about 11-year-olds obsessing over fictional romance. So on a similar note, the great people at the Korra Nation tumblr uploaded a short animated gif of Zaheer freaking out and screaming something. So the lip-readers of tumblr decided he's saying "P'Li," and now P'Li is totally going to die. If they want to milk Zaheer's relationship with P'Li for some dramatic tension, I feel like they should have mentioned it at some point in the season, apart from the episode she was introduced. It seems to me that its a writing trope for a doomed character when they tell another "I'll think about it." In this case with Jinora and her tattoos. I mean Jinora/Kai and Bolin/Opal are ~present~ and vaguely affect things but those are pretty unobtrusive compared to the Teenage Love Carousel we used to have, so it is okay. Korra + Asami bromance is way better than any ol' romantic subplot anyway. It's cool that this show is good now.

One of them said that (either in an interview or on their tumblr) sometime after season 1 ended, IIRC. It's just unfortunate they're not actually good at writing that stuff.

It's mostly because of how creepy people on the internet get about it and any discussion about it tends to get really, really creepy incredibly fast. Sure it's possible for people to want two fiction characters they are emotionally invested in to form a relationship with out being weird about it, but the more passionate the fan the less health their reasons for back two characters getting together is likely to be.

That was really goddamn good It seemed like there were a couple seconds cut out when P'Li died, like they animated something Nickelodeon S&P said no to and there was no time to fix it. I really didn't like it. Nothing was lost. No real sacrifice was made. And I hate that the Red Lotus' plan for Korra was the very first thing you would think of -- I was actually imagining (and hoping for) some complex, eerie Spirit World shenanigans. We never did get to see Guru Laghima or Xai Bau. I also hate that the Red Lotus was completely defeated; what a waste of a great group of villains that has given us so many cool fight scenes. And it feels like a cop-out to try to humanize these guys in the way they did, but not having that lead into anything in the finale. Also, there's no way to make flying Zaheer not comical.
