Neither of you know how good you've got it. The Japanese promotion was by far the worst-- you can pick two games (from a list of six) that you can download and play as much as you want for one whole month! After that month is up, you then have the privilege of purchasing the game at something like a 30% discount.

It's not though, most of the stuff in that "sale" is still expensive/overpriced as poo poo. Most of it is only discounted to what it costs normally in the US, or higher still.

The first half was sort of okay, but the second half has nothing worthwhile outside of Fire Emblem, DK94 and NSMBU arguably. Depending on your region, even with these sales, you could still be paying more than America is normally anyways.

I don't know how the Australian dollar is these days, but if it's anything like it was a couple of years ago then even with 20-40% off, we're still paying more than you guys are.

This sale loving owned. Grabbed two Mega Mans, FE:A and Donkey Kong '94. I would've also bought KI:U had I not ordered it a day before the sale started.

I couldn't have asked for more, really.

Except decent prices, especially for a sale. You just paid the equivalent of 40 US dollars for FE:A, I wouldn't personally exactly call that a bargain.

PAL eShop prices are overinflated/diproportionate to other regions in general, so all a discount does is bring them more in line with normal prices everywhere else rather than cheap(er), comparatively. If an apple normally costs $20 in some region and then is discounted to $15 in a "sale" I would still feel gypped and not like I just scored a great bargain.

Yeah well, I don't feel like a sale is the best time to complain about this, when the prices are actually decent. $ = € almost always, but what can you do. Region restrictions are now the norm for console games, and nothing would've stopped me from getting a North American 3DS instead but I didn't.

As far as euro prices are concerned, this is a pretty cool sale.

Yeah I wish Nintendo would take a look at how Sony handle sales. There are 100+ games on sale right now on PSN. Max Payne 3 is on sale for £3.99 which'll get you like one NES game on the eShop.

I can't speak for Europe, though I assume they do factor in tax in their comparisons but Australia pays around twice as much as the US does without tax, and I'm pretty sure US tax is $30-40AUS worth.

Even factoring import costs it shouldn't be anywhere near that high, and the need to have digital prices match RRP physical prices so as to not piss off retailers makes digital prices look even more ridiculous here, since outside of getting stuff rated, I doubt anything needs any localization from the Euro or occasionally American versions they source from.

Has the eShop price for Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton been announced anywhere? It shows as TBD in the eShop itself. I'm going to be out of town visiting friends on the 29th, so if the eShop price is competitive with the $30 Amazon price I'd probably just go ahead and get it digitally so I can have it on my 3DS for the bus ride back home.

I doubt it. 99% of the people I streetpass set a region with a tax, and I don't think there are enough goons who both buy mostly digital and care enough to get around throwing a few dollars towards something that indirectly benefits themselves. Plus if everyone did that, how would you ever fill out that streetpass map!?

Normally I'd agree, but half the retailers on this Nintendo page are offering it at $30 straight out of the gate. Gamestop is at $32 and Target is at $40, but the rest are $30, so I don't really know what to think. I guess I'll just stay with the physical preorder to be safe.

In Canada, the best you can get is picking a province with no PST and then only paying the 5% GST.

How is it as easy as picking an option in a menu to weasel out of paying sales tax? Nintendo should be getting a good idea of where I am from the IP address of the Wi-Fi spot from which I'm making the purchase. Yes, there are probably ways to mess with what IP they see, but it would be significantly harder to do, which would be a step in the right direction.

Well cool, but the Euro prices have VAT included, which is a tax hidden in the price, you literally can't not pay it. And it's 20% on average, which surprisingly covers the price discrepancy between the dollars and euros

But then wouldn't you run into issues with region lock? Like if I'm buying something off the US eShop on my US 3DS while I'm physically in Malaysia, what tax should I be paying?

I hope he didn't care about that pizza.
Some states/counties don't have sales tax on digital purchases and the postal code you set with the eShop is different from your 3DS region for purposes of street passing. I don't know why Nintendo doesn't go "golly the billing zip code and IP address are nowhere near the stated home region" but I guess so long as you're in America buying with an American card they don't care enough.
