Really though, he at least seems like a decent enough guy when he's not playing a character for Youtube. I remember seeing a video of him talking about what he does and all that jazz and when he's not laying it on thick for his viewers, he seems pretty nice, so it's kind of a pity that he can't just be real without risk of people nagging about how his old gimmick was better.

Though about that, I don't get why so many people have to try and ape the stupid crazy hard PDP overacting. You're not gonna somehow pull their fans off of them, just record your genuine reactions if you wanna be some internet horror video guy and that usually works fine. Are you legitimately scared by the game? Good, that can be funny, record it. Are you completely unmoved about whatever the game's doing? Good, that can be funny too, record that! What's not funny is hamming up your reaction x10 every time a pin drops or a shadow wiggles around. :mad:

Markiplier's a lot like the Angry Videogame Nerd to me - his gimmick is kind of annoying, but when he's allowed to just talk and play and discuss things he's absolutely fantastic to listen to. I really, really wish I had the sort of enthusiasm he carries himself with; it's endearing in a silly way.

The entire dodge/jump system didn't work very well on PC and it siphons your desire to keep on playing when you fail a jump right before a checkpoint 10 times in a row.

I guess the farmyard old gods rock concert kind of killed the spooky atmosphere too, but it's one of my favorite parts of the game because of how absurd it was. :black101:

That was just straight-up Remedy being Remedy. I love when they put stuff like that in their games, like the entire sequence in Max Payne 2 where you have to escort Vinny around while he has a big stupid Captain Baseball Bat Boy costume on.

Its biggest weakness is really the TPS elements. The daytime story is a pretty neat, if derivative, Twin Peaks knockoff (the lamp lady? seriously?). Alan Wake would have worked better as an adventure game with shooter elements, IMO. Even American Nightmare, while the shooting was way better, it felt tonally at odds with the story.

The entire thing just felt so... gamey. "Okay, here's your exposition. Wasn't that cool? Now lets go shoot bad guys for 30 minutes!" Maybe the biggest issue was how in your face the enemies were. The Taken was a neat concept, but it would have been better served, IMO, if you only rarely fought an enemy and they were all more puzzle fights.

Of course, the original conception of the game was open world with a day/night split so clearly they know something I don't know.

To be fair, PewDiePie is also a pretty nice dude when he's not on camera. He's legitimately gracious, pretty nice, and overall normal. I don't really have much against PDP as a person, but his content is horrendous. I mean, he's still not James Rolfe where I'd intentionally watch his stuff when he's not doing his schtick, but at the very least he knows how to do PR which is more than you can say for a lot of internet celebrities.

So I've been playing the original Fatal Frame, having not played any of that series before. It's definitely creepy and I've jumped a little bit a couple of times, but the whole experience is sort of killed by the God-awful voice acting. Are the other two games better about this?

So Alan Wake was brought up, and after 18 pages I imagine the setting and combat has been done to death (the atmosphere and setting is awesome but the combat just isn't that fun) so I would just like to say how good of a sidekick character Barry is.

When you are first introduced to Barry he's this sleazy Hollywood agent type and you're put off by him completely. But as you go through the game, he's the one real source of levity after segments where you're in the dark fighting these shadow people. It's weird how at first I started off hating this dude but as the game went on I was more and more relieved each time he showed up bumbling with a flashlight or wearing a suit made of christmas lights. Especially cause he's like the only one who believes you for most of the game. There's a part where you're in the forest on a high cliff and normally the segment would be pretty creepy and tense waiting for the shadow people, but down below you underneath all the trees you can hear Barry trying to get through the forest on his own and then you see a huge explosion of light burst through the trees as he apparently kills a bunch of shadow people using his ridiculous suit of lights he rigged up. It's pretty great.

The combat is bad though. And the DLC (American Nightmare I think it was called?) is loving terrible cause that's ALL it is. It's just combat constantly and I never did beat the final boss (the one that is a bunch of TVs). It's like the people who worked on the combat weren't even on the same team as the people doing the rest of the game.

edit: Oh yeah I did quite like the "next time on Alan Wake/last time on Alan Wake" stuff. I played the game over several days instead of one continuous playthrough because I liked that so much. Felt like I was marathoning a TV show :v:

This is what I hear pretty consistently. I was listening to a Co-optional Podcast where he got brought up and TB, Jesse and Dodger were all just basically like "we don't really like his videos but that dude is the nicest loving dude you will ever meet". So it's a shame his content is the way it is.

You want to watch a youtuber legit get scared at "scary" games watch any post-Jon Game Grumps where they play a scary game (if you can deal with Arin I guess, I know a lot of people here aren't a fan). Because Danny can NOT handle them and it's pretty funny. When he screams bloody murder at a jump scare, he's not playing it up. PT nearly kills him.

There are undubs floating around for 2 and 3 at least.

Also the Xbox version of 2 lets you play in first person, which I don't know how well that has aged but at the time was absolutely next level terrifying (especially considering the game wasn't really balanced around you not being able to see behind you).

Tried to start PT about 10 minutes ago and i had to give up after 10 minutes. It's a lovely sunny day here and it's about 2 in the afternoon.

I'm usually perfectly alright with horror games/movies but there's just something about the atmosphere from the get go. Maybe it's because you don't have a weapon or maybe it's because it's first person or maybe it's because it is pretty realistic looking but i was just nervous the entire time. I was holding my breath every time i walked through a door or around a corner and that's most of the game so i think i'll just have to come back to it some other day.

If the actual game turns out to be this tense then they will have perfectly captured the sense of dread and foreboding that made the first three SH games great.

Oh is that right? I assumed it was DLC when I got it, since it was a whole bundle thing during one of the Steam summer sales.

Looking it up I guess I never played American Nightmare. It was the first DLC I played "the signal".

So my point is the same just put in the correct game titles :v:

The ending DLCs to Alan Wake were The Signal and The Writer. It was the The Signal with the lovely TV boss. Neither one was very good.

American Nightmare was a stand-alone DLC where Alan was trapped in an episode of Night Springs, and the combat was streamlined to the point of actually being kind of fun.

When I was a kid a neighbour of mine let us borrow a playstation game called Hellnight. I'm sure it wouldn't hold up now, but that thing was terrifying to me back then. There's no combat, you're just stuck while being continuously chased by a relentless monster that gets faster and more dangerous as the game progresses. Intense stuff for an eleven year old. Kind of a very early predecessor to stuff like Amnesia really.

My first spooky scary game was the Sierra graphical adventure game Lighthouse. I don't think it was even meant to be a horror game, per se, but dear god was the Dark Being scary when I was a kid. It didn't help that part of the game's intro was him opening a portal into a baby's room and kidnapping it. Also that one loving semi-jump scare with a giant mechanical bird if you're not quick enough locking a window you don't even know you have to lock the first time around.

It's not even a game over, it just mildly inconveniences you and scares the crap out of you.

Huh, I guess I just had a completely different impression of Alan Wake than most of you. I actually loved the writing, it's been a long time since I played it so I can't remember what specifically about it appealed to me. I just remember being really happy with it. The combat could definitely get annoying at parts (crows :arghfist::mad:) but the combination of dodging and light management kept it pretty engaging.

American Nightmare I also liked to a certain extent but I got it for cheap on a steam sale. Don't think I would have been happy paying full price.

I would love to see another but I doubt it'll happen unfortunately.

I'd say Hellknight still holds up pretty well today. The running through mazes constantly can get a little tiring, but they really nailed the atmosphere. The fact that the monster can pretty much appear anywhere at random really keeps you on your toes, and places like the secret passages are also pretty tense mainly due to superb sound design.

Made me pretty tense wondering when the hell it was coming. Probably getting flashbacks from RE4 to be honest.

Yeah, it's a shame that until the final part of the game, you don't really get a lot of the far future pages. The Thor's hammer reverse-reverse reveal and the off-screen story of the Lady of the Light comes to mind as later reveals. I get that they tried to stay one step ahead of Alan at most times but "AND THEN ALAN SAW THE RANGER, BEATEN AND BLOODY" right before you enter the hut with the ranger, beaten and bloody, was kind of weak.

It's nightmare logic. You are having a bad dream after some horrible birthday party for your little brother at Freddies and eating leftover pizza before bed.

Seriously, the game evokes having a nightmare perfectly. The inability to get up and just run away is sort of like the helplessness you'd have in a nightmare.

2.) "It's just jump scares."

Yes, but they're used correctly for once.


All in all, I think it's good HORROR but not so much a good GAME. I don't really feel like I'm making any real progress or performing actions in an informed manner and I don't feel like subjecting myself to that to fail a bunch more times.

Five nights at freddys is a game where you are playing as yourself, continuing to play the game is the player making an active conscious choice to continue working there.

Hell the endings practically insult the player for continuing it.

I did sort of want the Xbox versions, but they cost twice as much as buying it on the PSN ($20 vs $10). Also means no undub patches for me, sadly.
