Hello!

I'm an American who is planning to study abroad in Hong Kong in the Spring. My university's international business office is horribly incompetent, so I'm keen to do my own research rather than having them blindly send me across the world. With all that said, I notice the Hong Kong post linked in the OP seems to have been lost to database errors, so I figured I should ask: what should I know/prepare for, staying a semester in Hong Kong? Would getting my textbooks be cheaper here or there? How much is a fair amount of walking around money? Anything that I should keep in mind?

I'm fairly new to travel in general, but I've read the general advice (not flashing around where I keep my wallet, only keeping what I need on-hand, avoiding tourist-y looking groups), and I'm receiving tutoring in Cantonese. There's on-campus housing, so those arrangements are taken care of.

Anyway, just some general advice would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!

Hang with HK goons. Don't waste suitcase weight with textbooks. Go to Ocean Park. Budget a humble 15 bux a day for student food and 50 bux for weekends and fun poo poo.
Check your student visa re-entry rules for China border crossings and/or cheap flights around Asia.

Which school are you going to?

If you wear shoes bigger than 11, bring a bunch, they're hard to buy here.

Otherwise, you're probably good to go. We now have a couple of all-import stores on the island so we don't even need peanut butter candies smuggled in anymore. I've often joked that Hong Kong isn't really part of China, it's just the world's biggest Chinatown. And what that means is it doesn't lack much for someone who's used to a western lifestyle.

As for walking around money or flashing your wallet, I wouldn't worry about it. Non-gang-related crime is close to zero here and the gangs will leave you alone. I've carried as much as $30,000 cash on me at one time and was way more scared of losing it to my incompetence than the idea of anyone pickpocketing me. As for how much cash I normally carry, I usually take $800 out of the ATM. That gives me a big $500 bill and three smaller $100 bills for whatever I might need.

Other, more specific advice will depend on which university you're attending because they're all in pretty different environments.

I think :peanut: is using USD and blood nose is talking HKD

I left my wallet on a bus in the busiest part of town and it was handed into a police station a few hours later with literally nothing missing - and not by a bus driver, by a member of the public

Safest city I've ever been in.

E: not to say that being careful isn't good advice, in fact if you're new to travel, it's great advice. Put your wallet in your front trouser pocket, not your arse pocket or jacket. It's far, far harder to nick it then. Just I'm saying you don't need to be crazy paranoid and let being scared ruin your time here.

E2: daily weather forecast is hot and sticky to the point that even the backs of your forearms will sweat and won't be able to evaporate. Then you roll a dice and that hot and sticky comes with thunderstorms or scorching sun. There is never a sufficient breeze unless it decides to give us a typhoon. So dress accordingly.

I'll come out and say this. Being careful in Hong Kong is bad advice, because it means you're needlessly worrying. Just relax, it's healthier.

The AQI ratings never really make too much sense to me. 350 in Nanjing is worse than 250 in Nagoya or Taipei, but that 250 feels way better than 130 in Seoul. 130 in Seoul is pain for me.

I'm pretty sure Seoul has more soot, if less of everything else. IIRC diesel is more popular there...it for sure is in the countryside with all the Daedong diesel tractors.

HKBU isn't known for being a particularly good school. I think their journalism program is well regarded? When I think good business school, I usually think of HKUST, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

But eh, I went to City U, which is often called lovely U, and I had a good time. It just depends on your program.
