TREASURER Joe Hockey says he does his own washing and is therefore not out of touch with average Australians.

Mr Hockey, speaking on Geelong radio, revealed he polishes his boots and does his own washing.

His comments followed last week's claim that poor people "either do not have cars or actually do not drive very far".

Mr Hockey said on Tuesday he was not out of touch with the community.

"No I am the same person I have always been, someone who focuses on doing the job that is at hand," he said.

"Like you, I polish my boots, I do my washing, they are the things you do as a human being, you are no different."

He said his comments last week was misrepresented by the media.

"But it is really important that you do not allow people to try and misrepresent your values and that is what annoyed me most about last week and I feel responsible for it and I accept that," he said

So ICAC only has any real influence on 20% of the population, the rest just barrack for their team or don't care. We'd need to know who they were planning to vote for before ICAC's revelations to make more meaningful inferences from this data.

That's a good way to view it, nice. I don't mind the idea that ICAC has made 1 in 5 people genuinely question who they vote for - that's got to be a fairly big result.

I'M CONCERNED ABOUT A NUMBER OF THINGS
So centerlink just rejected my austudy application because apparently my masters course doesn't meet their criteria (http://www.industry.gov.au/HigherEducation/StudentSupport/Documents/DIISRTEGuidelines.pdf). Does anyone have a list of courses offered that would meet their criteria that I could transfer into at the end of semester or any other loophole I could use?

I hope in some ways this is the Victorian people partly punishing the LNP over some of the outspoken members of parliament who are against the current abortion laws in Victoria. Watching 730 Vic last Friday and seeing the nutbags like the Australian Christian Lobby, DLP and Rise Up! Technically, you can't work as a clinical psych without that (or a doctorate) and a registrar program (where you do actually get paid work, usually). Likewise for any other psych specialisation.

It also covers some architecture and accounting and teaching masters streams, it seems.

He suggested that a future preamble might, however, mention the fact that "there were an Aboriginal people here on this land" prior to British colonisation, and to Bolt's increasingly loud objections, he pointed out that Aboriginal people were sorta kinda "here first".

On hearing this, Bolt arced right up. "No, but they weren't here first," he replied. "We were here the moment we were born, and to start looking ... that's racism."

quote:

To elaborate on the point I was making to Gary Johns:

Yes, Aborigines settled Australia tens of centuries before Europeans. In that sense “they” - those who first arrived - were here first.

But to say Aborigines today were here “first” is to treat each other as representatives of a “race” rather than an individual. No one of any “race” - Aboriginal or other - who is younger than 54 was here before me. They have no greater right to this country. It is racist to say a group of Australians living today were here “first” on the basis of who some of their ancestors were.

I vehemently oppose racism. We should judge each other as individuals, regardless of “race”.

What's Bolt's opinion on all the bits of the Constitution that still reference race?

He'd probably be entirely happy to remove it because the point of view will be logically consistent and, to most Australians, 'not racist' while still tearing down legitimate attempts to recognize how we treated and continue to treat Indigenous Australians and he's well aware of it.

Or he'd say "There's no need to go CHANGING things. Blah blah tradition, Judeo-Christian heritage!" because who cares about being logically consistent or not appearing racist in Australia.

Just curious, what masters degree are you getting that isn't on the list? My current masters wasn't on the list either because it was just created; I was denied austudy, I appealed and now it's on the list so the appeal was successful.

Centrelink explained to me during my appeal that it's the school that submits to centrelink a list of their courses and applies to have those courses added to the list. Sometimes schools either forget to have a course added, have really low enrollment for the course so that don't bother or have already applied and CL just hasn't updated their list yet.

In CLs review of a course to decide if it's to be on the list, they told me their only determining factor is whether the course confuses a "full time" course load so, according to them, they're not picking and choosing things like clinical psychology and law and theology because they prefer those courses; those courses are the ones that demonstrated to CL that they were full time. Things like a masters by research are harder to demonstrate as full time because the actual work load is so variable.

Do clinical psychology! It's on the list
