Join WeChat, but take it with a massive (MASSIVE) pinch of salt. It has many in jokes and assholes taking the piss because you're new and ask stupid newbie questions. Either suck it up or ignore them, but know what you're getting into. Several people have been put off meeting goons because of it, but just try to remember they're shitposting because they're jealous that China has jaded them and you're still finding it new and exciting. But they can always come through with good settling-in advice, however it ends up being phrased. I had the benefit of meeting Goonmom Caberham before joining the chat and he took me on a private-drive tour of Hong Kong, including afternoon tea at a highly exclusive golf club. I knew him as a solid bloke before I knew him as a snarky goonlord in chat. These days I stick only to the HK WeChat and even then only use it to schedule meetups. You can definitely ask stupid newbie questions without being made fun of. As long as you tried doing some research on your own and spent some effort. No one will laugh at you for not being able to read Chinese. I guess it becomes a newbie question instead of stupid newbie question. We give people poo poo for asking low effort questions. Don't be like that guy in the Japan thread who is all "hey I'm coming with my wife to Tokyo where should we eat" Be like "I picked a few places to eat in Tokyo, can anyone vouch for them?" There's like the internet and a lot of resources! Make a few decisions and choices on your own, then ask for help. Don't endlessly ask questions and not make a decision at the very end. Some guy bombarded both forum and wechat about buying a phone for a few days. Goons actually sperged over all options and laid out everything. In the end he got something else and ignored all office.Don't be that guy. Caberham there's no need for that, those are all dead issues. Reminder that I'm not just talking about that one person; gbm was put off meeting people too, and Mr and Ms Pieorgi didn't get on with the chat either. Even our guy who's nearly-but-not-quite Macau got pissed off with the chat and quit for several months. All of these are good people that I've met (except gbm, but he seems cool) and I don't want to lose another good person because they think it'll all be sunshine and rainbows in there. The wechat group is not for everyone. I would be careful about suggesting every newbie in China to join it. It was the reason I skipped the Beijing goon meet, which is too bad, because I enjoy posting here on SA.

Look, the wechat group was very helpful to me, but it has a particular tone that I personally don't mind but isn't for everyone. I'm not saying it's evil or that everyone on there is horrible 24/7.
