No man all you need is a twitter account and then just look for times when an indie "game" dev had friendly communications with a game journalist outside the context of gaming and you've exposed the poo poo out of that nepotistic corruption!

I quite liked Proteus, which is nothing if not an art / experience game. There are nearly zero mechanics, no story, no fail condition, and few expectations to lower. There are frogs tho.

I guess the underrepresented group I identify with are uninhabited magical islands and season-changing stone circles? Is there an otherkin category for that?

Nah, maybe I just like novel experiences and current indie games are discovering about twenty novel ways for me to disappear up my own rear end for every one traditional game with some novel gameplay over the same old hamster wheels. Game journalists like novelty even more because they are forced to play the lovely hamster wheels as well as the good, fun hamster wheels.

If you don't like them fine, whatever, but don't imagine some conspiracy for why these games get some press coverage.

I like concept games too, which is why I was really unhappy with Gone Home and some of these other story-based games, like the Really Bad one at the center of this stupid poo poo. I really like the way you discover things in Gone Home, yet it completely failed to do anything with that. It's like a tech demo finished up and rounded off with an English major's lovely unpublished novella.

I would have liked it $10 worth. But I didn't know that in advance so I waited, because I was confident I'd like it $5 worth.

I have a hard time defining how much I like games in relation to price. I really really liked Proteus, but it was really short, but also not very expensive. I certainly liked it more than I like the average sandwich. Yet I buy far more sandwiches than I buy indie games! How do I reconcile all these conflicting measurements?

Mostly I just don't give that much of a gently caress and concentrate on enjoying a thing. I have spent money for things I didn't like, so if I like a thing that's good enough for me.

hemophilia posted:

I have not yet liked Gone Home or Depression Quest for any amount. Because these experiences are more real, I have a harder time being invested in them. I can't relate to having a broken and unhappy family because I have the opposite. I can't relate to Depression Quest because my own experiences with that subject are very different from a 20-something girl with multicolor hair.

So I stick to different experience games. I guess I can relate more to magical time-islands or bizarre narratives than I can to someone's intensely personal story.
