It's especially dumb as the current indy boom only exists because of Steam and other digital distribution methods. The only thing you really need to know is that like startups in literally any other industry, substantial numbers of indy game developers are going to fail simply because they fail to find a niche or they can't displace existing products or whatever.

Given that Matrix openly admit that most of their developers can't make a living off their games it's hard to see their business model as anything other than a total failure.

e: actually re-reading it the article he linked essentially goes "real competition pushes prices to the floor, I don't like this and it is bad for customers", whereas of course Slitherine's 'act like a cartel for an entire genre to keep prices inflated' model is of course great for their customers.

Inflating prices is good for the consumer because it keeps game makers employed making games. If the market bottoms out because of :argh: Steam :argh: then nobody will be making games, thus preventing the consumer from enjoying new games.

It all makes sense you see.

Matrix getting their poo poo onto Steam has also caused the entire company to do a complete 180 on their attitudes towards sales and other aspects of digital distribution. It turns out even Matrix can't lie to themselves about sales not working when their office gets buried in money every time their stuff goes on sale.

I did end up getting TEAW last night. I couldn't resist. And... yeah it's basically an AGEOD game. :( I'll never learn. The AI is brain dead, the command chain mechanics are idiotic, and I have no idea what's going on.

Pride of Nations turn resolution was something like 10-15 mins per turn ... for a game that models 1830 to 1900 with 15-day turns.

As for having no idea what's going on, I suppose that's historically realistic!

In the kindest way possible... UOC's AI is not one that you lose to, more like "win in a less totally overwhelming way." Largely because your troops/air force rolled badly.

[e] UoC's AI has never come close to 'winning' a game, even when I was learning the system. Its partially due to the scenario style of the game and partially just the AI not understanding how to play the system (or perform more than the flimsiest encirclements.)

Does the newer Combat Mission games (on the 3.0 engine) work on Win8? It doesn't show on the requirements, and for the life of me I can't get my version of Shock Force to even launch on Win8 (after patches as well).

All CM games run full screen only, I think?

I took a look in the CMSF support forums and users there claimed that it too worked for them on Windows 8, strange. It might be some issue unrelated to Windows 8 itself, maybe?

quote:

Another cause for the game to not launch properly has been identified as a system conflict with the intro movie. This file plays when the game is first loaded. The solution is to simply prevent the game from trying to launch that file which is located in the Data folder. You can do this by renaming the file from its default name of Intro.wmv to something else like Intro.bak.

Go through a vpn, or set up an AWS (amazon web services) instance (like a another computer) and purchase it through that. That is how I would do it.

You should subscribe to a vpn, I wouldn't give a credit card through a proxy unless it was a 1 use dummy card. That's assuming battlefront can't fix whatever issue is banning your IP, maybe it's a regional thing?

AWS is a little more complicated to set up initially, but it is free for the first 12 months. You can just set up a Windows Server and remote desktop into it. Windows Server, at least 2008 and 2003 that I have used, work pretty much the same as normal windows if you just want to open a web browser.

Server 2012 is basically the same as Windows 8 (:barf:) as far as the interface goes. So if you go that route, it's still not difficult. That's basically the nice thing about Windows based servers. They're fairly straightforward right up until the point you start trying to get it to do a bunch of crazy bullshit it really doesn't want to do.

Nope, doesn't work either. Game simply refuses to launch, no error message or anything. Don't even see the process pop up in the process manager. Installed it right out of the box on my new 8.1 computer too, so :iiam:

What's the penalty like for encircled units in C:TGW? I'm running through an Entente game and I've isolated a German infantry division in Antwerp. It's on its third turn of isolation now and it's still an incredibly tough shell to crack, despite being without supplies for like 3 weeks. What gives?

Non capital cities provide half supply. It mostly hurts recovery of efficiency, but a full infantry unit in a fortress hex in half supply will be hard to destroy. You just have to pound it with shock attacks knowing that it won't recover the efficiency quickly enough.

Or just place a garrison to ZoC it and move on.

Any town or fortress hex that produces PP will keep units there in half supply (indicated by a yellow dot), and if it's a fortress hex it's going to be really loving tough. You just gotta whittle it down over time since your units can recover efficiency faster and regardless of supply situation a unit can only recover 2 strength points per turn max.

On the other hand encircled units that are out of supply totally (red dot) are completely combat ineffective and will take huge losses in any attack they make or defend against.

Contrary to popular belief, tic-tac-toe isn't purely a game of chance.
Units have to be within 50 or so hexes from a capital to get full supply. It's why Russia has multiple capitals.
