Technically the free T4 ships aren't either, and the mirror ships are basically just... those, so.

The real issue is that unless there's free T6 ships for folks (and there won't be) this means that purely F2P players are now two tiers behind the folks who buy stuff. That will make it even harder to balance content and stuff. Not that Cryptic really tries to or cares about it, but still.

Unless I'm missing something, f2p players can get zen ships via dil. Process is certainly slower but it's available.

I just hope there's a good carrier in the mix of T6 ships. Between the Vesta, the Scimitar and the Bastion, I've really got used to that kind of gameplay.

From the sound of it the initial T6 will just be the science vessel equivalents for the new bridge officer type, but presumably later ones would be of the usual ship types too, yeah.

You're pretty much paying to unlock the skin on your T5 Heavy Crusier Retrofit. All the Heavy Crusier designs are honestly kind of ugly except for the Constellation.

But yeah, all of the pre-50 zen ships are pretty pointless.

That said, I do kind of wish that the Refit Connie, TOS Connie, Miranda, Oberth and NX-01 had level 50 variants or something as they are pretty iconic designs. Maybe I'll troll an STF in a Connie or Miranda sometime.

Also, does it make sense to skip getting a tier 5 fleet ship when tier 6's are coming out?

As a new level 50, my plan is to get Tier XI Rare gear or better on my Mirror Qin, grinding some Omega marks to get the MACO shield and whatnot before worrying about a better ship. That and throwing up disco-balls so pubbies feel the power of party.

There's a few like the Vandal (KDF) and the Valdore (Rom) which have must-own consoles for their respective factions, other than that though it's mostly just for extra skins for your fleet ships.

MoraleHazard posted:

The upgrade system seems pretty good. You'll be looking at spending 500-1000 zen to upgrade that fleet ship instead of the 2500+ for a T6. We also haven't seen stats on those t6's either so they may be poo poo for all we know. If you've got the EC for modules you might as well get a good fleetship or just get a lockbox/lobi ship.

It actually makes a certain amount of sense when you consider consoles. There would be literally no reason to ever buy the Valdore if it didn't have the Valdore console, but if the Valdore was T5 (or T6) then you might only buy the Valdore, and not also buy an end game ship. By putting useful consoles on essentially useless ships, they encourage you to buy more.

E: Basically what others already said, but with the added reason that putting good consoles on useless ships forces more buying.

The Constellation is ugly, and unless the Picard maneuver adds a gigantic ambush bonus and has an insanely low cooldown, it'll be a waste of a console slot. Even on an 11 console ship.

It's really hard to suggest what you should do when there's so much that we still don't know everything about the new expansion and how they're handling upgrades. Normally new 50s should work on grinding rep to get rep gear, and you should still be grinding rep. But we don't even know if rep gear will be worth getting or not yet. Even with ships we haven't learned enough yet. Odds are that any well built end-game ship will remain useable in the expansion if only because the average player doesn't know how to build a ship well.

I guess for a new 50 right now I'd recommend grinding rep projects, running STFs with goons whenever possible, and maybe play around with a few different mirror ships to get an idea of what type of ship you would enjoy playing most. And saving up as much dil/EC/fleet creds/etc. as possible for the expansion.

Sorta. It looks like it's some weird thing where they're getting bumped up to the equivalent quality of a Mk XIV white, which didn't exist until now. All of Cryptic's items have scaling stats, and each quality level on stuff like consoles effectively bumps it up an equivalent mark level. The backend must have changed to include the new mark levels in today's patch, and Cryptic didn't think to check that certain items might be affected.
