Bambino chapter 19 Finally someone shuts down Tsuchimiya for being an insubordinate rear end (Bacanale Chef Asuka, Ban's temporary replacement) in the right way, a firm verbal warning that his disrespect will not be tolerated and further outbursts will jeopardize his job. Although now its looking like he gets his own sad sack story so people feel sympathy for him. Something about a woman he lives with milking him for all he's worth, or possibly he's crazy and its a body pillow. pentyne fucked around with this message at 10:47 on Aug 16, 2014 |

I wasn't expecting it to go this far when I recommended it to be picked up by crunchyroll! Honestly, if you buy into the premise, it was a bit unrealistic how Isao didn't explore her body earlier. But yeah, it was an arguably needlessly explicit chapter. That said, I don't think it was framed in a way to make it titillating. The whole "melt into you" train of thought alongside the manic silhouette towering over her did a pretty good job of keeping it all incredibly awkward and off-putting. Some of the reactions to the chapter are predictably super negative, and while I can relate, I find it curious that it's not the context of the situation (Or for the older readers, the fact that it portrays a teenager.) that creeped most people out, but just the act of masturbation itself, as if that was what was wrong with the scene. I'm intrigued by that phone call though. I basically force myself to forget about this title for a month or so and then catch up in one sitting. It's the only way I can cope with the cliffhangers.

Oh yeah, there's plenty about it that is needlessly skeevy, but I didn't really want to get into the creepier aspects.

After I found Yowamushi Pedal from the Shonen thread, I went around looking for other hot-blooded sports manga featuring less popular sports. I came across Gunjou, a manga about ekiden, a long-distance relay race done on roads. The manga stars a female protagonist whose only joy in the world is to run in ekidens and specifically registered to this one school where everybody good at anything is already on their own great team because one of the teachers is a legendary ekiden runner. I went in expecting some hot-blooded running and hot blooded convincing the teacher to return to the majestic road of relay racing, some awesome burning camaraderie and lots of running terms and special abilities. Turns out it's actually a drama and most of the focus was on personal tragedies. There is competitive running somewhere in there, but after that is a multiple chapter flashback about an energetic sports coach slowly dying from a disease. I balked then, but now that I re-read it, it's not a bad story. It didn't focus much on the competitive aspect of a sports, but more on the effects of how a sport affects the athletes. The way the teammates are 'recruited' is, while not unique, quite interesting. How the tragedies sort of relate to each other is also, I think, nicely done. Also also, a sports manga featuring all girls. Haven't seen that one too often. Can't name one off the top of my head. It spent about four volumes just getting the main five person and the coach together, and turns out it ends in five volumes. Oh well. For all I said about how this isn't hot-blooded though, the latest chapter of this tragedic sports manga is of course five girls trying to outrun a train, one of them running solely on ~friendship~ and another being motivated by the sweaty efforts of the other. Try the series out.

While it's not exactly hot-blooded in the sense that it hasn't got spike-haired teenagers shouting nonsense words at each other until their heads explode, it is entertaining and even funny at times and some of the connecting punches and kicks during matches look downright painful (the name of the game is MMA).

I had the exact same reaction when I opened up the latest chapter of Sun-Ken Rock to see if the translation had improved. Literally just an entire chapter of explicit sex. The translation did feel more natural to me than when CR did their catch-up dump. The dialogue wasn't that complicated, though. IIRC Cannon God Exaxxion also had a chapter where the main characters went at it. It's almost refreshing to see after reading so many shonen romances that sexualize their female characters with panty shots and bathing scenes without ever letting them have any sexual thoughts or agency for themselves. Not that Sun-Ken Rock or CGE are good examples of healthy sexual politics, but I think I like that better than the Ken Akamatsu approach.

I love how much this is being shoehorned in by this point. 20 entire chapters (was this a weekly manga?) and Ban has been ineffectual as all hell, Asuka comes in and starts laying down the law but the guy is so consistently bad that even she starts to doubt her own sense of taste for a moment, and he's still employed by the restaurant. After the first 2-3 days of screw-ups the head chef would fire the gently caress out of this guy. I bet the cooking contest will be judged by the other chefs, and the bad cooks chef buddies will pick his food because they don't like Ban, and the whole thing continues on for another 10-15 chapters.

Hopefully midway through the contest the head chef just walks in and cans a couple of people.

The first series had an excellent first half, but near the end you could see that the author was running out of ideas (What with Coyote Tango in there). It was still decent at that point but secondo is way shittier.

Just caught up with Liar Game. The Four Kingdoms game looks pretty interesting. Some exploitable wrinkles, and it looks like the endgame is going to be interesting. Just looking at the rules, a few things jump out. Attacking everyone else is, at best, equivalent to doing nothing (-3 to all players). And it looks like if you get down to 1 hp, there's no incentive to attack or defend at all, since the attacker dies before their target does. I would not be surprised if the final game comes down to someone sacrificing their victory by doing that. And it doesn't seem like being the boss or general is - technically - restricted to members of your own team. I could plausibly see Nao or Akiyama ending up with control of multiple factions.

By the way, I noticed something interesting: Since Yokoya's knowledge of the Liar Game comes from the novel, he doesn't actually know what happens to the losers. He must have just made up the stuff about human experimentation because it sounded suitably scary. I actually don't like the whole novel idea; I feel that making Artier a plagiarist makes him a lot less threatening.

Well, I'm wondering If Artier was the original author, and used his big stacks of money to start the LGC? Authors with tons of cash are pretty far to suspend disbelief, I admit it, but I think the series has been going long enough for such fantasies. EDIT: Oh, there's the whole 'the liar game company pays out a billion if you can prove they cheated' or whatever from Nao's second discussion with the fake lawyer. I wouldn't be surprised if that came up. Tunicate fucked around with this message at 16:17 on Aug 31, 2014 |
