I'm not sure if this is covered by the rules but I couldn't see anything in any of the forums (gadgets, ask/tell, SH/SC etc) I checked. What's the deal with rooting phones and installing other operating systems on it? At work a few years ago there was a guy who installed custom operating system on his phone that had been put together by someone online. What's the term for that? I know rooting is a part of it, but rooting just lets you control the operating system that's already there. I'm interested in replacing the whole operating system. I know that a lot of the drivers are very specific for that hardware and so you can't just load windows or ubuntu on it, but I want to find some communities or online resources that provide more information on the process, the limitations, the capabilities, etc. But I haven't found any and don't know the terms to search - it's all just rooting your phone so you have greater access to the OS already installed. Which is a good step I guess but all the rooting resources I've found are aimed at people who just want to install custom themes etc, there's nothing in-depth about running terminals etc.

Sulla-Marius 88 posted:What's the deal with rooting phones and installing other operating systems on it? For Android phones, the Cyanogenmod Installer has recently improved the simplicity of the job but it's still not foolproof by any means. You'd get a cleaner and more up-to-date version of Android for your smartphone (compared, say, to Samsung's modifications) if it's a couple of years old. There's always the risk of something going wrong, so it might be best to try and get a couple more years out of a phone you'd not be desperately upset to replace - I'd say wait until it was out of warranty at least. Don't know so much about Apple phones, it's more about installing unauthorised apps from outside the App Store... In any case, lots of homework and certainty required.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I have an old android (Sony Xperia U) and a just-broken Nokia Lumia 520. They still work systems-wise, it's the peripherals that are screwed. I wanted to see whether they could be stripped down to bare minimal services and then controlled remotely. I will take a further look tonight.

As the previous poster said XDA developers is the place to go. There are many tutorials on how to root phones. I have had multiple HTC and Samsung phones over the years and I have rooted every single one (mostly to get rid of "bloatware"). Do note though that rooting your phone will void the warranty from the manufacturer but except for that it is not illegal in any way. Should something break though and you want to claim from the warranty there are also ways and means to "reset" the phone to stock standard.. The Experia U should be fairly simple to root as they have developed a one click root. I am not sure about the lumia but all the info should be on XDA.

Bear in mind that 95% of the custom OSes (commonly called "ROMs") you'll find are going to be (shittily) themed versions of either the stock operating system or Cyanogenmod. Most of the development work that isn't going towards adding flames to the system font is devoted to adding features that make the device more useful as a phone/tablet. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? You'll likely find more success by looking for apps to do what you want, rather than trying to replace the operating system on the device. Some of them might require root to work fully or at all, but almost none of them are going to require a new ROM. Also, you'll get better and more detailed answers in the Rooted Android thread

Why do some recycling centers not accept plastic bags, even if the bags are made of a kind of plastic that they otherwise accept?

Thanks, I've bookmarked that thread so if/when I have any more specific questions I'll ask. I just want to get a feeling for what's possible, we have a few old phones that are still largely functional as computers if not personal phones (e.g. broken touchscreen), so I'm wondering if there's a way to recycle them and do something cool with them.

Babygravy posted:In light of the recent iCloud nudes hacking, vid decided I should provably start encrypting my files.. Not because someone wants my nudes but because :security: For many years, TrueCrypt was the go-to answer for this, but in May, the devs abruptly canceled the project and put up cryptic warnings that it was not to be considered secure. Only they know for sure what happened, but there's been speculation that they got a National Security Letter ordering them to do something unsavory like put in a backdoor in the next version, and rather than do that, they just killed the whole thing. (Such things have happened before.) There are plenty of other encryption systems out there, but honestly most of them are decidedly user-unfriendly and none of them even approach being the de-facto standard that TrueCrypt has been. So my recommendation, for your case, is just to use the last full version of TrueCrypt. It still works just the way it always did, and it's still passing an ongoing code security audit with flying colors. Yes, in light of the devs' warning, there's a chance that TrueCrypt might already have a subtle vulnerability that can be exploited by someone with all the knowledge and resources of the NSA. But it sure sounds like that's not what you're defending against. Even if the NSA has broken it wide open, TrueCrypt will still work great as protection against all 7 billion of the non-NSA people in the world, including the iCloud celeb-nude people and most major governments. So I'd hesitate before choosing TrueCrypt if I were storing evidence of selling nuclear kiddie-porn drugs to terrorists, but I would (and do!) still trust it with my own boring-rear end real-world private files. Anyway, it's super-simple to use. Just make sure you get version 7.1a from my last link above, since 7.1a is the last full version. 7.2, from the official truecrypt.org site, is a read-only version intended to encourage you to migrate to something else. Then google for "TrueCrypt tutorial" and take your pick -- this one looks pretty decent.

I'm selling off some comics on ebay. I accidentally relisted a group of comics that I had already sold and the new listing also sold. I did not realize this until after the auction was over. Once I discovered my mistake, I immediately refunded the buyer (and issued an apology). I requested that ebay cancel the transaction so that I can get my fees refunded, but the seller refused. Is it possible for him to refuse the refund?

For all the outrage over the fact that 100's of hot women have had their nude photos released on the interwebs, only it really looks there were maybe a handful of women that got their accounts hacked. How precise does this need to be/what's it for? e: Actually on second thought it's going to be less, since the height of 15 is measured past the line for the base. zachol fucked around with this message at 20:04 on Sep 2, 2014 |

It depends on how much per bag but I'd shoot for 230 or 220 then. 200 probably won't be enough, but if it's easy enough to get an extra bag you could shoot for that and get more if you really need it.

Am I right here? The Correct Answer seems to be calculated for n=6. I emailed my teacher about it and he sees nothing wrong. He says "The index i starts from 0, so you have to choose i=0,1,2,3,4,5 for n=5 to develop the summation!" That's 6 terms though Edit- I think maybe I confused n as the number of terms with n's role in summation notation. It doesn't help that there's a table in the book he wrote that does the same thing.. Yeah that's all truncation error is supposed to be. The point is essentially that computers approximate using summations like that, so they'll never be completely correct. I thought n was total number of terms, so it was my bad. Thank you!
