uhh there is more than one type or sub species of pigeon that does the homing thing so I don't think they're extinct quite yet

mooyashi posted:Slightly related but the last known carrier pigeon on Earth died in captivity last month Can you throw up a link in reference to this because 'carrier pigeon' is just a term that refers to a pigeon that is used to send messages. Given the number of pigeon racing groups that still exist, and that the most common species for carrier pigeons is your run of the mill rock pigeon, I'm not really sure what this could be about. Maybe something to do with Passenger pigeons? Cause those went extinct like a century ago. edit: A quick check shows that it was a century ago to the day, so maybe that's it?

WhiskeyJuvenile posted:at least the people about to retire theoretically have kids who work I studied in grad school on the economics of this gerontological shift. Its...quite something. Some demographics do better than others. Some demographics die younger than others at a statistically significant rate. Ultimately, as the boomers retire is when you'll see wider shifts in American political framing. Right now, the worst-off demographic for boomer retirement is white middle-class male, and best-off is black middle-class female.

Since middle-class black females are the demographic more prepared for boomer retirement than any other, reduce benefits that disproportionately accrue to middle-class black females, say, civil servant pension funding. Then I remember that generations are a fake and stupid thing, but it's satisfying for a brief moment.

it's true that it took an intergenerational effort to get where we were -- many boomers opposed these changes as much as they approved of it, but it's still not hard to feel that you didn't get to even try to have a say in how things like austerity were implemented
