my fave thing in windows update is the progress bar that doesn't show progress just a rectangle moving from left to right for an indefinite amount of time

wasn't UAC horribly broken by just changing the name of your executable and getting instant admin privileges?

the bug is with the default mode for UAC with Win7 is one notch above full (unlike vista which was full on/off). in the default mode, it keeps a list of common built-in apps and auto-elevates them without going through the prompt. UNFORTUNATELY, it does gently caress-all for check for code signatures and stupid poo poo like notepad.exe gets elevated so basically if you rename some malicious app to notepad.exe and run it under the userspace it will auto elevate and boom full system rights. its stupid as hell and microsoft has openly said they will not be fixing it because they are fuckers and if you're going to use UAC you should have the slider cranked all the way up

wait, what? I was under the impression they whitelisted specific Microsoft .exe signatures and then didn't bother to do anything to prevent any kind of code injection, this is even more hilariously worse

my fave is when it suddenly winks out into a system tray icon which does actually show the progress as a percentage in the tooltip when you hover it and if you click the icon it may or may not reopen the windows update screen which may or may not show a progress meter

some guy at ms who hates his life (so all of them) probably threw it out there as a proof of concept on a friday and his project manager was like "cool thats done. now you're on the windows experience index team".

yeah I am honestly surprised that more malware isn't using it as a way to silently elevate to system. its probably easy for AV to pick up the elevation payload but my vendor only sees it as an optional "potentially unwanted application" detection so I'm sure lots are blind to it.

and the percentage doesn't really update in any consistent manner so it'll be 39% for 12 minutes and then 80%

p sure it's only based on the number of updates, so if updates 1-15 are tiny hotfixes and update 16 is a giant patch bundle it'll race to 90% and sit there

some more windows gripes from my list

Scrolling is dependent on focus, so hovering over something and scrolling doesn't work, and when you try scroll your browser on monitor 2, it might actually scroll your Outlook on monitor 1, beucase that's the last thing you clicked.

Everything uses nested pop-ups. Creating an Outlook search folder opens a New Search Folder pop-up, creating a custom search opens Custome Search Folder pop-up over that, then creating criteria opens Search Folder Criteria over that. Creating a new folder also creates a pop-up instead of creating a folder with a temporary name like "New Folder".

Categories in the menu show a colored graphic next to the words "Blue Category", "Red Category", etc. Why not just show the colour or at least drop the word "Category" since the menu is called "Categories".

After searching for a name to add in an Outlook Search Folder, it will automatically add the first result.

In Lync, hovering over a user's name in a chat will show information and options, but hovering over the display picture next to it will not.

The reminders app only runs within Outlook. So if you close Outlook and leave Lync open, you won’t be reminded of any of your Lync meetings.
