Yeah, that's exactly what I recommended. The ensuing conversation would make an entire sitcom script, but the LF folks would ruin the re-telling, so I'll save it for the local goons who know Southeast Asia. In any case, she'll be visiting the Smithsonian. I think that's the most accessible recommendation for international people, especially people from countries with no historical connection to Western stuff. The rest of the things on The National Mall don't really mean much (e.g. Jefferson Monument, Vietnam Memorial, etc). I loved all thay when I lived there, went to the Smithsonian like 4-5 times, Arlington National several times, you name it. I love DC, other than the people.

i wasn't even around for lf so i shouldn't feel targeted, but i keep getting the feeling like you say things like this every time you feel like saying some horrible poo poo but realise that people would object and you would be unable to respond, so you back out like a coward and throw in a snide remark like this. so in a way, by LF folks you mean non-horrible people and, heck, that's me, so i do feel targeted.

anyway, i don't even know where you could be headed with this or what you're even saying, so... is lf short for something else this time? would that make sense? probably not.

Turns out that people who constantly whine about LF years after it was closed, much like those that whine about "SJW's" claim they are just making GBS threads on the 'bad ones' but really just have terrible opinions and didn't like being called out on them.

I was never really a very active LF poster either, but it helps if you just read what people post as LeFtist as that is the meaning. Not a whole lot of folks whining about the white-noise contrarians when they say that stuff.

So one of my friends who I talk about politics with often tells me that I need to read Ayn Rand before I can criticize her philosophy. I'm always like "no I don't because I follow politics which has nine zillion idiots who say they got their ideas from Ayn Rand and said ideas are always terrible and sociopathic." Also I think at one point I said "Well do I have to read Mein Kampf to criticize its philosophy?"

Also more importantly there is only a finite amount of books I can read in my life and I don't want to waste some of that number reading poo poo.

It's a good friend and he's actually fairly left-wing (he's a gay dude who's been fairly active in LGBT activism since he came out in college) and I've already dragged him further to the left in the couple of years I've known him. He's just trying to convince me that I need to read her before I can be informed and fair in criticizing her or her particular spin on it and I'm like "no I really don't."

Don't nap for more than 30-35 minutes. 15-25 is usually all you need to feel better (depending on how tired you are). After 35 or so your body enters deep sleep and if you wake up after that you'll be groggy as hell.

Start with 35 and try to work your way down to 25 or 20 minutes.

If you and he cannot agree on a price he is willing to pay and you are willing to accept in compensation for spending your time reading Ayn Rand, then the market has decided that activity is not economically feasible. An alternate would be to convert her books to fuel.

Heh this is golden. I thought I had gotten a good one with saying I don't need to read Hitler to criticize his political philosophy but now I've got another.

Well seeing how basically every form social injustice takes are products of power disparities inherent in non-socialist systems then yeah I guess socialism would be a good way to promote social justice.

Also social justice is mostly(but not always) used contemporarily as a pejorative term for people who don't disagree with the ideals of such.

While social justice is an admirable thing to be fighting for, most folks considered "social justice" types will be talking about inequality or oppression.

i ask because i've seen it used by working class conservative labourites during the 70s, i.e. people who were opposed to stuff like gay rights/abortion. i suppose its meaning has broadened since then to include those and other issues.

i don't think i've ever seen 'social justice' by itself as a pejorative, only 'social justice warrior'. Always thought the latter started as a kind of eye-rolling thing towards transethnics/otherkin types but is now the new political correctness :argh:

No it's pretty much people who are against any sort of social justice complaining about it, and claiming that they just mean those types, but it turns out they trot out the SJW poo poo anytime anyone questions racism/sexism/bigotry. They claim they're just talking about obnoxious people but they use the term to shut down most conversations concerning social justice. Look at how often the term is being used by the folks who are on board with harassing Anita Sarkeesian.

Also people who complain about political correctness are generally awful people to.

Every generation has their term of contempt for those who call them on being assholes.
