She also uses a lot of creepy text-to-speech and voice effects. Don't know what she uses for drums (does Gaia have drum sounds?); when she has drums they sound sequenced, but she plays live on top of that.

Like a lot of Roland stuff, it weirdly has a complete GM module built in. In the case of the Gaia it's completely inaccessible from the front panel though. But it's multitimbral and everything over the midi in.

edit: That implies there are drums. Probably an acoustic, electronic and jazz kit.

I have an Ultranova (my first synth) and it's really fun and easy to use. Here's a little 8bit-ish thing I made from a section of the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. All sounds from the Ultranova:

Go on, then; what would be a good, cheap gateway synth?

For a $500 synth, the Waldorf Blofeld desktop module is pretty incredible. Great sounds, flexible as hell. Pair it with a cheapish keyboard controller (the Alesis Q25 is decent) and you're good to go.

Anyway yeah, the GS crowd is pretty grating and I only go there to read up on synths, listen to other people's music, or post in a thread so generalized that it can't be misconstrued as being worst than Hitler for loving digital.

I probably make 'terribly uninspired but perfectly engineered' music though.

Struggling through using YMS on my phone. Also probably not the best environment to try to make minimal acid. I like that you can play a 14 measure phrase vs a 5 measure phrase though.

I'm using Thetys and BeatDesigner to stay in the spirit somewhat. Picked my drum sounds. Trying to remember how automation works in Cubase. Getting organized mainly. The music so far is garbage.

Kinda stretching the rules (no groovebox) but I'm going to try to make something entirely with sampling the SH-101 with the S1000 (basically the same names...) will try for as much percussion and things like that so it's more of a challenge. Had sort of wanted to try that anyways. Only 4MB of sample memory so that's part of the challenge.

Nope, gently caress your full fledged DAW. I don't care what you guys use for sound sources, but the sequencer should be hardware, or goddamn simple software. If you're worrying about fader automation, you've missed the point.
Whip something up in rebirth or something so your lack of workspace organization won't be an issue.

Dunno, what are the sequencing options like? If you mean a one note ambient drone, no. If you mean, like, a patch being driven by a celluar automata sequencer then I would hesitantly say yes. If it's a normal linear sequencer, but you can only play one voice at a time then, sure, why the gently caress not. I could hardly call, like, a Chopin piano piece not a song.

edit: also stoked to see so much casio love. next synth challenge should be casiorchestra challenge.
