If you watch it that way it's a great show about crazy poo poo. I used to catch this show on mid-day reruns, so I've only seen a handful of them, but there's one episode with Mandy Patinkin in which he meets with a woman on death row, and it was legitimately fantastic and his acting performance was fantastic. It was this one: "Riding the Lightning". That episode made me cry. Criminal Minds made me cry, ffs, because Mandy Patinkin and Jeanetta Arnette were so good in it.

Just yesterday I found out that Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) is the sister of Anna Campion, who wrote/directed the excellent Loaded (on Netflix right now) and wrote Holy Smoke.

Weirdly I own that on DVD and not only have I never watched it but I don't even remember buying it. I'm currently on an unplanned not great vampire show kick watching The Strain and I just started From Dusk Til Dawn on Netflix and with a tentative plan to watch the last season of True Blood next. So maybe I'll just commit to the them and go the full way and watch Blade finally now that you reminded me it exists.

So far there's been one arc of several episodes about one case aside from the pilot's self contained plot. You know what's interesting (in a bad way) about Legends? You got this guy, the Morris Chestnut character, who's investigating Odum for murder. On that basic concept he should be a sympathetic antagonist; he's trying to do his job and bring justice on behalf of the dead, but he's getting cockblocked by bureaucracy and a frighteningly powerful sect of the FBI. But he's not sympathetic. Like, at all. Despite having possibly the most noble goal he's the least likable character in the ensemble. It's not even a Skyler White "I hate him because I love Sean Bean so much" situation. He's just horrible. This is a guy who is told, by his boss, "Do not gently caress with the undercover agents. They're doing sensitive work, and thousands of lives may hang in the balance." And then he goes behind his boss's back and fucks with them anyway. And when the guy running the undercover unit visits him at his home and tells him, "Seriously, DO NOT gently caress WITH THE UNDERCOVERS, you will lose everything" -- which is exactly what would happen if his unsanctioned investigation gets an agent killed and/or allows a terrorist attack to go down -- he goes and tells his superior "THIS MEANS THEY'RE SCARED! I'M ONTO SOMETHING, I KNOW IT!" I keep waiting for his boss to calmly stand, close the door, and repeatedly backhand the dumbest motherfucker to ever survive Quantico until he understands the complicated nature of his situation.

Sober posted:I was just thinking but did anyone here remember the Blade TV show (that lasted one season) on Spike or something? Blade is one of my favorite shows, no lie. Probably my biggest "Why did this only get one season!?" pick of all time. Sticky Fingaz was a much better Blade than Snipes, and the arch villain (portrayed by Neil Jackson) was one of the suaver villains to grace cheesy comic/vampire media. The only downside was the leading lady, played by Jill Wagner, who was rather terrible at the role and walked like a wrestler. The story was very reminiscent of World of Darkness too, with different vampire clans each having their own stereotypes. Great show. edit: To add to the litany of mediocre vampire shows, Blood Ties is a worthy addition to the list. Great lead actor who shows up in half the things I watch, Kyle Schmid. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808013/?ref_=nv_sr_2 Manos del Sino fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Sep 5, 2014 |

Not sure about Witches of East End but I watched the first season of Hemlock Grove recently. It didn't really wow me but I was entertained enough. And from what I understand the second season is better than the first so I'll probably check it out after I'm done catching up on Supernatural.

Witches of East End is a perfectly enjoyable show, if very soapy. Charmed is probably the strongest comparison I can make. I binged it on Netflix and have been watching the current season as it airs. Hemlock Grove had a first season that was often painful to get through, but its second season was a significant jump in quality. To the point where I'm eagerly anticipating the new season next year. Of the two, I'd say Witches of East End is more worthwhile, if only because you won't have to deal with 13 rough episodes to get to the good ones.

I kind of like Hemlock Grove. It's nearly so bad it wraps back around to enjoyable. Witches of East End is very reminiscent of Charmed, so far as theme and quality are concerned, as a point of reference.

Eh. Charmed was fine pulp tv but the ads I saw made Witches seem darker to me. Maybe I'll just look around Netflix and Amazon Prime and pick random stuff. There's bound to be lots of stuff like Teen Wolf, Lost Girl, whatever. Mediocre horror(ish) tv here I come. By the way, I'm two episodes into From Dusk Til Dawn and I'm cautiously optimistic about it. Its kind of interesting how they seem to following the movies outline but adding a LOT of stuff before and during it to flesh it out. And they already seem to be diverging a bit so I don't imagine having seen the movie will ruin too much for me. I'm not expecting a lot but it seems like it could be a respectably fun show. My main criticism about it is watching the lawn mowing kid from Desperate Housewives do his best George Clooney impersonation. Its really jarring.

But there is a lot of the same humor and general focus on witchcraft-as-relationship-complication.

Well its on Lifetime so I'm assuming a certain amount of soap/relationship factor to it. But Charmed was kind of light and fluffy. Even when Charmed was doing stuff like demons from Hell trying to take over it was all pretty much like it was directed at 12-year-old girls. Which it probably was since it was on CW/WB. The ads for Witches are all dark and fire and stuff so I just got the sense it had more of a dark plot and consequences. I assume its target demographic is women but I also assumed it had a more mature slant given the jump in general tv changes from Charmed days to today. But maybe that was just deceptive advertising meant to sucker in people like me who didn't even know Lifetime made tv shows. Oh, speaking of shows on channels traditionally meant for women and not me, Vampire Diares. That's supposed to be worth watching, right? I guess I can add that to my mediocre vampire watch list.

Witches of East End is definitely darker and more mythology focused than normal Lifetime fare, as well as what I've seen of Charmed, for that matter. It also succeeds much more at what it wants to be than Hemlock Grove. A tentacle porn monster inexplicably shows up in Season 2 though, so be warned. I'm a little worried about the final season of Boardwalk Empire, which starts on Sunday. The fact that it's a shorter season and it starts with a time skip makes it look like a recipe for losing story threads.

I'm also reading that instead of flashbacks filling in the seven years, which would make a lot of sense and enable them to show just the highlights from that part of history, they have copious amounts of flashbacks to Nucky's childhood. Think I'll skip it.

I'm a fan of Welcome to Sweden. It isn't really comedic per se, but it is a sweet, understated, in depth look at relationships and what it takes to hold onto them, slammed against a study of a culture that is only deceptively similar to our own. I like that its not trying to be zany or anything, just this odd duck of human drama and sentimental travelogue. Only a few episodes into it, so I hope it doesn't change.
