That actually makes a lot of sense. With Fraction gone from Marvel and Bendis on X-Men I guess the main candidates to take over Avengers would be Soule or Aaron.

quote:

"So why sign a deal at all, if things were so great?" Soule wrote. "Well, it’s pretty simple. Writing eight titles a month (which I’ve been doing for quite a while now) is no joke. It’s a constant tightrope walk, requiring serious focus and discipline. I’ve proven to myself that I can do it, but now that I have, it’s time for a different challenge -- I want to know what I can accomplish with a smaller slate, where I can really dive in. I’ve accomplished breadth, now I want to see about depth."

Additionally, a DC Entertainment spokesperson has disclosed to CBR News that Soule will remain on "Red Lanterns" and "Swamp Thing" until March 2015.

"Let me be clear -- the decision to work with Marvel for a while isn’t any sort of denigration of DC," Soule wrote in his blog post. "I had a fantastic time there, I was treated extremely well, I have strong positive feelings about all of my editors and the DC universe of characters, and I look forward to hopefully working with them at some point down the road."

Soule also confirmed that his new detail does not affect his Oni Press creator-owned series "Letter 44." "I'm on that one until it’s done, which won’t be for a while yet."

And just like that, the GL family is dead for me :smith:

If true, I hope it gives him a position of power and he gets away from being just an Inhuman/Thunderbolts type fixer over there. Would that stop him doing Letter 44 at Oni?

e: Here's his blog post about it: http://charlessoule.wordpress.com/2014/09/02/why-i-did-it-on-signing-with-marvel/
"Exclusivity" just means "you can't work for DC/Marvel while working for Marvel/DC." These agreements have never stopped anyone from doing creator-owned work published by other companies. Letter 44 shouldn't be affected at all.

He writes 8 books, is a practicing attorney, AND runs the law firm he practices in.

Speaking of, I'm impressed at how good was this week issue (I still question DC's Brainiac though), Eternal remains unimpressive while I really enjoyed most of the 5YL issues. The only real flops were Grayson and GL (and even then, GL wasn't that bad as long you ignore the plot holes and bullshit developments) Aquaman was also weak but I'm hoping is because is two issues instead of one.

Detective was very entertaining if with some mixed art, Action Comics definitely will bear importance down the line on the main series, Batwing was pretty cool and hopeful for the setting while Phantom Stranger and Swamp Thing were utterly fantastic.

Justice League was also pretty cool and it was satisfying to see the initial arc about Power Ring finish so soon.

AFoolAndHisMoney
Aug 13, 2013

Swamp Thing's Future's End was absolutely fantastic and could easily be an end to Soule's run, I'm really looking forward to Soule filling in the gaps up to that point but I'm sad he'll be dropping Red Lanterns as well as he goes Marvel exclusive. I was really hoping he could take over Constantine and fix it up given how great the Whiskey Tree arc in Swamp Thing was.

I hope this has led to unexpected antics such as

Location--New York Courtroom (bum bum)

CS: Your honor, in this simple briefcase, I have the papers that PROVE, beyond any reasonable doubt, that my client is innocent of all charges and should be released immediately!
Judge: Bring the evidence forward, please.
CS dramatically pops open the case, looks inside, and pauses. He continues to stare downward, silent.
Judge: Mr. Soule? Your evidence?
CS: Um, Your Honor, I...I would like to call a motion to recess as instead of the documents that will save my client's life, I..I've inadvertently filed in this briefcase, instead, my script for She-Hulk #11, a delightful tour-de-force to be sure, but

Immigration and corporate law. He may not have to make many appearances but he does write a lot of briefs. He couldn't make it to one of the SDCC panels I went to because he was working on a case.

I know people here have a huge hate on for Simone, but I'm quite happy with her next project Secret Six.
I was a huge fan of the original series and I'm glad Simone is back to write more, as I felt it really was her best writing. Looks like she is bringing back Catman, but I'm pretty sure she won't be allowed to use Deadshot as he is currently being used in Suicide Squad, which is sad because one of the best aspect of Secret Six was Catman bromance with Deadshot. Still I'm happy to see the title come back.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Suicide Squad gets canned one of these days. They rebooted it because of abysmal sales (around 22,000 on issue 30, the last before the new launch) but none of the issues they had the first time around seem to be corrected with the new reboot. It's not so big a name as Teen Titans that they'll keep it on if sales don't improve, so I'm hoping it ends and Deadshot can be sent to a decent writer.

As far as Gail goes, she does her best work when she's not taking her material so seriously. Her dark comedy in Secret Six and devil-may-care attitude about Red Sonja reflect that.

I remember watching some Immigration/Asylum law cases. From what I can remember, they were literally were just the lawyer reading out the case law for hours at a time. And it was almost always the same law over and over. But you had to go through the same formalities over and over again.

If Soule had to do that over and over again, I could easily see himself writing comics as a way of staying sane.

Ragdoll showed up in Batgirl and I think there was a Scandal cameo in his arc? Bane was in a bunch of Forever Evil mini-series that I didn't read. Jeannette hasn't made an appearance to my knowledge, and Deadshot is stuck in the lovely Suicide Squad series. At least he has his porn-stache back.

Those Bane Forever Evil issues were great. He dressed up as Dark Knight Returns Batman, took Talon as his Robin and rode around on a horse. It was glorious.

Also, he broke Manu Bennet's back.

Superman 32, it's kind of a soft reboot. Johns and Romita Jr. ignore a lot of "nu52 nonsense", bring Clark back to the Daily Planet, give him a new Superman analog to fight and it hits the high beats that Johns can do. Also has some of Romita Jrs best work in a while.

I think it's worth mentioning that this weeks Avengers 34.1 is a very good "Superman" story starring Hyperion, which is what brought it up. You don't need to read any other Avengers to get whats going on, but you could read Avengers #4, #12, and #13 if you want more Not Superman.
