While the left is not immune to charismatic leadership, in general we seem to favor more of a community-reinforcement model. When we get together as a group, it is a lot of people all saying the same thing and how much we agree with them (while occasionally censuring people for veering from whatever minor orthodoxy so we can feel like there is actually a "debate" or a "discussion"). When right-wingers want reinforcement of their view, they sit down and listen to one singular figure say what they are thinking (while occasionally disagreeing with them for veering from whatever minor orthodoxy so they can feel like there is actually a platform that they agree with only "in part").

It's the same poo poo, radio and TV is just awful mediums for how left-wingers tend to want reinforcement. When Huffington Post came out it was a cultural reaction to Bush. It because a gossip site because what we want is more of a forum where we can get together and kvetch about the state of the world and did you see what she was wearing in that dress? That's not a bug, it's a feature.

Right-wingers do the community-reinforcement thing too :ssh:

It's not "the same poo poo". Yes righties and lefties each have loyalty to their respective groups, but one peddles misinformation and one doesn't. One is driven by ignorance and prejudice and one isn't. One adheres to extremist fundamentalism and one doesn't. One isn't willing to admit it's faults and mistakes and one is. Etc.

Undeniably. Freep and "Silent Majority" type bits are all about that stueck. But posting at the leftist version of Freep (I mean, Maoist Third-Worldism gets some semi-serious play around here) and talking about how brainwashed the other side is demonstrates a profound lack of perspective.

But they also take it in directly. All we've got on the left are freep-style community-reinforcement sites. That feeds the "Silent Majority" since major sources are presenting a different opinion.

Question.

Am I allowed to find protesters annoying, yet find their cause just?

I am asking this because I saw a Code Pink protester flash on screen on Fox News a while back, and got douche chills.

It's frustrating because I agree with what they say, but I don't agree with their methods. Really the whole Bush Administration era of politics was just cringe worthy from every which way when one looks at it in retrospect.

There is NO symmetry between the left and right of the political spectrum. "The Left does it too" is bullshit. "The Left", people that I know at least, are friends with a wide variety of people, from all groups of society. Conservatives tend to bunker down into their own little enclaves, online and in their communities. They socialize with people like themselves, people who will reinforce their warped view of the world.

Liberals are far more open to new ideas, which is the whole reason I'm on this site. Outside of trolls and tongue-in-cheek conservatives, we discuss far more than "third world maoism" or Scandinavian socialism. I've seen a lot of people admit to the elegance of capitalist market mechanisms while also supporting federal social security programs. We get a very diverse mix of opinions here, based on nuanced, fact-driven analysis. You don't see that elsewhere.

I think we're being overly critical of the "liberal" nature of section of the SA Forums. Don't fall for the "current center" of the political spectrum. Keep looking for truths and functional policy, not partisan bullshit or false dichotomies between fundies and the rest of us. Fundamentalism in America is warping your perspective of politics.

There are dickbags on both sides, but the thing is conservatives consider simple facts to be offensive to them far more often than liberals do, and this goes up to the Fox news network and even elected officials. They'll straight up say things that are false ("Obama said XYZ", "ISIS is crossing the border from Mexico", "Something completely untrue about the ACA"), and if you look up the facts and repeat them without embellishment you are accused of being an obnoxious liberal. They spit on fairly conservative networks for being Useless Mainstream Media for reporting facts instead of shrieking about Benghazi. Quite honestly, the far right is such a fantasy world that reality itself has a liberal bias.

Actual leftist theory is so far out of the mainstream of American discourse that you aren't going to run into it at all unless you're fairly well-educated. You might be self educated but it's not something you're ever going to just casually run into. There are no leftists on American television, for example -- at best there are a few left-leaning liberals. You're never going to hear Rachel Maddow advocate for a guaranteed minimum income, for example.

As mentioned before, too: the minimum wage has been raised many times in the last 100 years (sometimes pretty dramatically) and LITERALLY nothing happened as a direct result. Many of the doomsay consequences came about due to other factors, but never could they be linked to minimum wage increases. Ever. Not even once.
