And no one questioned Romney (who if he was darker, would be classified as a Mexican) and McCain (who if he was darker, would be classified as a Panamanian) at all. It seems more likely that racism is a necessary but not sufficient cause.

It's absolutely just racism, you're not getting away with this. I've never met a Cain supporter who wasn't inordinately proud of it and using it to prove that they are not racist. That's racist.

You can be racist against a group and still like/approve of select members of that group. This phenomenon tricks many racists into ignoring their own racism, e.g. "I have black friends". Especially if said individual seems to share animosity against that group as well, like when Cain and Allen West both invoked plantation imagery to refer to the Democrat welfare state, implying the majority of African Americans were dumb and helpless.

They hold their nose and support Cain because they have other motivations in addition to racism. They are racist AND partisan. Refusing to let human beings, however terrible, be reduced to caricatures with only a single personality trait (racism) is not being complicit with racism, jesus loving christ. If anything, it paints them in a worse light because it expresses how willing they are to engage in blatant, cynical hypocrisy.

Incorrect, without racism there would be no conservatism. It's impossible to caricature these "people" (term employed loosely) as they have made caricatures of themselves. They are partisan racists, it is inseparable and fueled entirely by racism.

They gleefully support Cain because they are racist, want some way to demonstrate that they are not racist, and know that Cain doesn't have a shot. If Cain was viable, all of his support would evaporate immediately.

The answers are simple, face it.

Nope, there would be no class warfare if not for racism. It'd be solved in this country, the New Deal would have ushered in shared prosperity for all and there'd have been no opposition. Poor and middle class whites would have united to demand their rights because they wouldn't have had to worry about blacks getting those rights as well.

Clearly class warfare in places like India are due to white on black racism as well

and the hutus were actually white people when they killed the tutsis, but then became black african again after they were done

I'm glad to see someone else say this. I went through a series of discarded post drafts, the most civil of which was "how do you get your pants on the right way?" then decided it would be better to not respond. Does conservatism not exist in a society before it encounters other races? How does conservative opposition to any action on climate change reduce to racism?

That last part is actually relevant to the thread. It always boggles my mind when people trust the makers of electronic gadgets, but not climatologists. Like, how can you believe that scientists are willing to conspire en masse to perpetuate a giant hoax, yet still own a cell phone, let alone a GPS enabled smart phone?

I think the argument is that the Republican Party took on its current, insane, destructive, paranoid, us-vs-them, authoritarian position in part because the Democratic Party took on civil rights as part of its platform starting in the 60s. This alienated all the racist Democrats who were just fine with the New Deal and the Great Society so long as it was understood as for poor whites only. Once they learned that wasn't the case, they leaped over to the other party and radicalized it/it radicalized itself in response to their presence, and all racists became an opposition party dedicated to destroying the social safety net they had previously supported. Before the 60s, both parties had a lot of openly racist members, and the Democrats did better with poor and working-class people because they favored an expanded social safety net. Once black Americans started working toward getting access to that safety net, most of the racists jumped away from the Democrats and never looked back. The Republicans welcomed them with open arms and reframed their rhetoric to be about protecting whites from the advancing black hordes by killing socialism in America (using code words, of course).

In that sense, class warfare as it has been waged since the 80s has been structured by racism, perhaps even getting its distinct flavor of "work hard and you'll be rewarded by capitalism" from outrage at the idea that poor black people were exploiting welfare paid by poor whites who did work hard: Reagan got himself elected by pushing that button as hard as he could. It's probably true that if the nation as a whole were still as racist as it had been in the 1930s, we would be as socialist as Canada, at least.

I've said it before, but you only need to scroll down and glance at the top half of one of these pics to realize that it was from David Dees. Someone posted a thought on the reason once before, but now I'm leaning towards his distinct "magazine cut out collage, but in photoshop" style, along with something I can't put my finger on about the color...

Say what you will about Dees, but he's developed such a distinctive style that you know you're looking at a Dees. Not every artist can say that. Though he may be the first artist whose chosen medium is "photoshop."

It blows me away that he makes his living doing for-hire illustrations for Sesame Street books. I wonder what he thinks about PBS.
