White privilege is a thing, they get special treatment every day. It's just invisible to them because there isn't specific legislation pointing to it. Heck, rich privilege is arguably a thing as well. Things like AA, or debt forgiveness or whatever are there to tip the scales back into balance, not tip them further out of balance. To use a different metaphor, the point is to establish a certain floor of existence beyond which nobody should fall. Right now that floor is dying, homeless and alone, in the gutter. We as a nation can do better than that.

I have a sister-in-law who, upon hearing about the protests of Mike Brown's murder, threw a tantrum over this whole issue, declaring that if only "Those People" would stop talking about racism, racism would magically not exist. In the same (seemingly endless at the time) breath, she went on to complain about mooches, socialism and people not "respecting" the police. This is a woman who is entirely depenent on Social Security Disability and her husband's government job to survive and whose husband has a multi-racial family. The mind recoils in horror when I try to make sense of it all.

It's not special treatment to try to fix it when a group is unfairly poo poo on. This objection is contingent on a belief that a systemic problem either doesn't exist or doesn't need fixing. Remind them of stuff that's really easy to demonstrate exists, like housing discrimination.

I can understand not wanting people from outside your culture to come and undercut you looking for work and such (not that I agree with it), but I don't understand the mentality of removing your own social programs just to keep them from having them as well. Why wouldn't you just require assimilation as a prerequisite for citizenship and make it illegal to hire anyone who's not invited? Race is part of it, but it can't be the whole story there can it? The French and Germans hated each other for centuries, regardless of shared anscestry.

Not necessarily true, since the economy is not zero sum, and getting rid of a large portion of possible criminals (crime is directly related to poverty) would make many parts of the country "feel" a lot richer. This is why gentrification makes neighborhoods a lot nicer without any major capital improvements.
