Wasteland 2 is coming out in less than 2 weeks. Supposed to be pretty good.

  • It's not EXACTLY what you're asking for, but in my opinion Frozen Synapse is one of the best strategy games in the whole world.
  • It's not new but for real Fallout Tactics is pretty fuckin' awesome.
  • Skulls of the Shogun is a much more simplistic take on the strategy grid game, but it's actually pretty drat fun in spite of that.
  • I'd suggest possibly Divinity: Original Sin, with the caveats that it's a pretty tedious walkaround openworld rpg with poor-ish (purely expository) to mostly boring (with some occasional bursts of cute-funny but not funny-haha) writing. It's got a bawler combat system though. And the openworld sandbox systems are pretty great too. It's an unengagingly written, but good game.
  • MAYBE the Shadowrun Returns director's cut of Dragonfall. Neat game, solid game writing for a 90's Shadowrun/Dragonlance book, but kinda poor encounter design, sadly. It's supposed to be getting worked up a bit.
  • Expeditions: Conquistador is a really drat good rpg. The combat's more XCOM-lite than XCOM as far as encounter design goes, but you still have a nice variety of options. It's got an an overworld system like Heroes of Might & Magic, with some survival systems on top of that.

Jagged Alliance 2 sucker.
Check out the thread, those dudes do a much better job of explaining why the game is great than I ever could, but trust me, it's fantastic and well worth your time. Only bad news is I think you just missed a sale on it at GOG.com, but that's ok, it worth the 9.99 regular asking price IMO. You can get it on steam, but for some reason, its 10 bux more...

It's $17.49 so $3.50 a pop.

EDIT: Here I'll just quote myself from earlier

I can't spoil anything but it's decent. There's several large, multi-tiered main quests that you work on throughout the game (with a large amount of sidequests too) but honestly the main focus is on exploration, dungeons/riddles, and combat mechanics. It's more about playing the game than reading it (if that makes any sense).

EDIT: I should also note that it's hard as balls.

Sweet, thanks. I'll check it out. :)

So Minimum is pretty cool. It's an older-school run-n-gun Arena style 3rd person shooter. There's a TDM but there's also a Titan mode where there are creeps that spawn that drop power-ups for your Titan which moves towards their base and smashes the enemy titan. I haven't really enjoyed a fast-paced Multiplayer Shooter since TF2 Orange Box days so it's a nice cheap surprise.

So far though, all the games I've played have ended in a Draw since it seems pretty easy to kill an enemy titan and power-ups don't seem to make a significant impact (unless it's greatly powered). Stay away from the Shotgun though, that thing is bad. Bullet Hell seems to be the most popular and versatile starting gun so far--so start with that.

It does still feel unfinished in some respects for not being "Early Access". There's a ton of schematic, weapon, devices, upgrades, and other whole tab pages that are empty, greyed out or "coming soon". There are apparently going to be upgrades/experience that guns earn and that's all not implemented yet. Seems strange to leave EA when there's a plethora of things still not implemented

Co-Op mode is garbage though, it just spawns some dumb AI bots (only 3 types!) and its just "kill 68 enemies" to end the wave and there's always a minute spent trying to run around looking for the last AI that's stuck somewhere. You know these types are more timer-wave based survival for this very reason

Edit: Also picked up Hack N Slash. Perhaps I'm just getting a little bit of Buyer's Remorse and while it is a definitely cool concept with well-done typical Double Fine art like in Broken Age, but... I can't say I'm really all that engrossed in it and there is something that is kind of offputting. It sort of reminds me a lot of Ittle Dew with how it's mostly just solving some more or less the same simple puzzles with a few tools. If you really liked Ittle Dew and love Double Fine, you should get this game for sure. I think I need to give it some more time tomorrow with a fresh perspective and progress farther to see if it opens up. I got a headache now (hopefully unrelated to the game :v:)

A wired controller at this day and age defeats the entire purpose of HDTV PC gaming. I would rather get another wireless Xbox 360 controller for Windows or try the DS4.

I recommend a DS4 with DS4Windows.
http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-DS4Windows-yet-another-DualShock-4-driver

You can already pair the controller and use it in Windows without an extra program or driver. Once you've done that the PS button will connect it to your computer.

DS4Windows makes it appear as and behave like a 360 controller. It starts with the service "started" so as soon as you connect the controller it turns it into a 360 controller. you can run this program on startup.

The touch pad + options button cycles through different touchpad modes. It was janky in earlier DS4 Windows wrappers but it's gotten pretty good. I especially recommend the DS4 for PC gaming because every once and a while you'll need to click OK, navigate through uplay or something, or get through an opening menu of a game with 'partial' controller support. I've been thankful for that optional touchpad on the controller more times than I can count.

After a few games Mount Your Friends get really good. People start learning how to fling themselves and abuse the physics, positioning, and spawns to make for a tougher competitive multiplayer experience. Also custom heads are silly.

Other than the titans and some bosses, almost every enemy in the game is one from the Castlevania series. It even has Dracula, Death and Satan in it (you're Dracula :v:)

Unless you think the Castlevania series is about just killing vampires with a whip, which it hasn't been for decades now.

edit: Your powers (daggers, holy water) and weapon (chain whip) are all from the series too.

Basically, the first game is good and serviceable Castlevania game if you temper your expectations and don't expect it to be as awesome as the Metroidvania games that have come out in the last decade.

Compared to the last 3D iterations of Castlevania it's made of solid Gold.

It doesn't play like a Castlevania game is the point. It's a God of War clone, which is fine but it's not what you'd expect going into a game labelled Castlevania. Arkham Asylum is a better Castlevania game than either Lords of Shadow game. So is Shovel Knight, if you're looking for a pre-SOTN game.

They've added a lot of new features up to this point, but balance and tuning have been a bit wonky and some bugs slipped through. Such is the nature of adding whole new systems to a systems-driven game.

They still get a free move when they make visual contact, but that's why you bring battle-scanners. They HAVE changed just about everything else. Enemy squads now actually exist on the map, start in new locations, patrol randomly and can be a variety of alien numbers, races and ranks.

Seems that they're just going to keep on trucking until they hit a reasonable limit of what they can do without tearing out more of the games original guts. It could be next week, it could be October. Depends on what they encounter - the game was never meant to be modded, so almost every new feature is reverse engineered in weird ways.

Enemies actually exist on the map in EU, it's just that they teleport around instead of actually moving. EW changes this to actual moves, in large part because it's far easier to field invisible scouts. It does have the nice side effect of allowing you to be sure an area's clear because you've kept an eye on every entry point, though.

As to the discovery move, that's absolutely necessary to keep you from effortlessly annihilating them right off the bat. Just be glad they can't take reaction shots at you like in the original.
