Just to get a little discussion going here: What do you look for in a landscape picture? Specifically what do you think makes or breaks a picture?

A good landscape is no different than any other "good" photo, for whatever your personal idea of "good" is. The unique challenge of landscape for me is that there's very little control that can be exercised over the arrangement and lighting of subject matter past a certain scale, which makes camera position and lens choice more important. I think that the biggest pitfall of landscape photography is that it's full of clichés. I'm immediately turned off by anything involving roads, railroad tracks, piers, winding trails, etc., unless the artist had a very distinct take on the subject. Long exposures of seashores or other moving water are a close second. Those things are pretty, but there are so many pictures of these scenes out there that it's really difficult to get excited about yet another instance of any of them. The landscapes that tend to grab my attention are ones where the photographer found some kind of novel order in the scene that they chose to capture, which can be heightened by the level of complexity of the elements in the scene. Maybe they found some colorful forms (assuming the picture was taken in color) that admit a kind of order when viewed in a certain way. Perhaps the light in the scene was special in a way that helped the subject matter to transcend its ordinariness. The landscapes I enjoy most are the ones in which all of the elements in the scene combine to form a strong enough sense of atmosphere that it feels like I've been transported to the scene, to that particular moment in time. That's the feeling that I really want when viewing landscapes. It's really easy to make and take a technically fine landscape picture that doesn't accomplish any of those things, and part of what I struggle with in my own work is letting go of the pictures that just don't work, preferably before they're committed to film or digital capture. "I was there and saw this" is not the foundation of good work for me. Sometimes there really is nothing in front of the lens, and that's OK. So it goes with all photography.
