I love that their reasoning for not doing a follow up album is along the lines, "we only make poo poo that we think is better than the last."

And man, Those Once Loyal is loving solid start to finish.

Also, at trying to bring in Slipknot discussion here.

I listen to Liquid Metal now that I have Sirius in my car - its mostly good as im sure people can here attest to - but man, they've been having the guys from In Flames as guest DJ's and this is the most ball-less release yet from the loving fall from grace assholes in that band. They were bringing up the ballad they have on the album. I am all for softer songs to space things out but this sounded horrible. Yikes.

Liquid Metal is poo poo.

I signed up for spotify and it's pretty decent. There are some alright playlists. It adds decent variety as opposed to always listening to my pinned albums in google music.

Their bass is amazing, of course, but the tone and the overall production makes it pretty much impossible to enjoy. I wish more bands would mix fretless like StarGazer do :sigh:

Augury are a lot more wanky but they have some of the best fretless work. And Cynic of course. I think Arthur Von Nagel uses a fretless with Cormorant as well, but it's not as high in the mix.

Yeah, I've always liked LaPointe's bass best in Atheretic. Augury isn't terrible but it's just unmemorable to me and has too many ideas just thrown in there for the hell of it. Been a while since I listened, though.

You wanna save this place, right? And I want to destroy it. Brick by hypocritical brick.
Some of the best bass playing, fretless or otherwise, is by a guy who's not even mainly known for his bass playing, Rainer Landfermann.
Best known for his vocals on this classic:

Pavor are pretty sick, I've only listened to Furioso but I hear their first is just as good.

My favorite metal bassists overall are Tony Choy, Doug Keyser, Ron Royce and Blacky. And, of course, Marco Panichi on the first two Hibria albums.

A couple of questions. First, what would be the be the quintessential Dream Theater album to get? I got :10bux: on itunes and enough "like Dream Theater" music that it's about time I got some.

Second, I was listening to Witherscape's The Math of the Myth, and was wondering if there was a band that sounded like that song in particular.

Images and Words, Awake, and Scenes from a Memory are the quintessential Dream Theater albums. Anything else is pretty forgettable, generally.

So, this song is basically an incompetently-produced, over-mastered mashup of different stuff Dan Swano has done over his career. If you like the guitar and keyboard work, grab his Moontower album:

So Astral Doors released a new album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57EFQ5pCO0I

It does feel a bit like they're running out of steam, but it's still very solid basic heavy metal/Dio worship. And I'll listen to pretty much anything with Nils Patrik Johansson on vocals, so eh.

The problem is that he always makes me think of Wuthering Heights and I get worried they're gone for good since it's been so long without any word from them. :(

Oh drat, the one Wuthering Heights I have doesn't have him on vocals :( Now I'm thinking I should drop £20 just to own Far From the Madding Crows just for Nils's voice and "Bad Hobbits Die Hard". Because why not? :black101:

The band's been getting better with every release. Far From the Madding Crowd is good, Shadow Cabinet is excellent and Salt is a goddamn masterpiece. If you're gonna buy one WH album, imo get Salt.

Sorry I should have been clearer. I was interested in more of the mashup nature of the song more than it being Swano. Like, I was looking for something like the synthy heavy metal that transitions with the more progy parts and the difference between the two rather than more Swano. I guess I'm looking for heavy metal that has some prog bits? Heavy metal is probably not the right term for it, but I'm not really sure how to explain it. Also doubt what I'm looking for is competently done, if at all.

e: Not really looking for anything that synthy or anything, just this is the only song I know like that, and those are the parts of the song that fit what I'm looking for.

Images and Words, Awake and Scenes from a Memory are basically the holy trinity when it comes to Dream Theater (I actually really liked Octavarium, but some folks will disagree with me).

Also, do yourself a favor and listen to Holographic Universe by Scar Symmetry. It's probably one of the best proggy melodeath records I've heard.
