I'm usually completely in favor of puppetry and animatronics and general traditional effects over CGI, but I will say that GotG is one of the few movies in the past like, 5 years where the CGI all felt natural and not-incredibly-jarring.

Yeah, Rocket and Groot are right up there with Gollum for me.

They've gotten incredibly good with CG creature effects in the past 6 years or so, and I think they're largely superior to traditional stuff now for almost every situation. It was mostly the late 90's-mid 00's that had the terrible CGI beasties that had you wishing they'd used animatronics instead, Gollum being a noteworthy exception.

I'll grant that in terms of animation, but as an overall character....not so much.

Jar Jar looks and acts great. He holds up pretty OK today.

However, he's just a bad character in a worse movie. But his CGI is good.

I'm not usually a gently caress CGI kind of guy, but when you watch the comparison between the Phantom Menace puppet and the CGI they replaced it with for the blu-ray it's staggering.

Yeah, it looked like someone created the puppet based solely off their memory of what Yoda looked like. It was the previously unknown uncanny valley of puppetry.

I've been reading through this thread to see others' opinions on it, and I'm glad it wasn't a fluke that my friends and I liked it so much. Usually when it's a comic/video game based movie my brother or friends will ask me 'oh, are the books anything like this?' 'Who's this guy?' Aside from the Nova Corps being like, the space air force, I felt this movie was pretty good on setting everything up for a bunch of rather unknown characters (like, you know what you're getting into going to see a Spider-Man movie or a Batman for example).

My only issue was that I would've liked to see a little more of Korath (Djimon Hounsou) even with his limited screen time, I cracked up at their first encounter, and toward the end when Quill got all giddy when he called him Star-Lord. I need to get it when it comes out on DVD, since I had a hard time hearing some of the dialogue in the theater, especially during fight scenes, and what I misheard left me confused. When the Necro guys were telling Yondu to surrender, I honestly thought the bad guy shouted 'All your men have turned on the Nova Corps'. But since they were still helping in later scenes, I was like 'yeah, heard that wrong'.

And this was from about halfway back in the thread, but another poster mentioned that we'd never get the Super-Skrull in a Marvel movie. Anyone know why that is? I'm assuming somebody else has the rights (the studio that did those awful FF movies, maybe?). That's a bummer, because I liked him in all the cosmic story lines in the comics, like Annihilation (and I always pick him in Marvel Capcom 3).

It was tell all your men to turn on the Nova corps. The reason why they will never get super skrull is due to his character/powers being tied directly with the Fantastic Four.
