Basically, I want a bird that's cuddly, friendly towards Fuji, who's around the same size. I don't want to get another budgie, though. While Fuji is healthy and the place I got him from carries other budgies, dealing with Tokyo's weak heart and her subsequent passing broke my heart and I wouldn't want another budgie so soon.

So far, I've narrowed down my possible bird breeds to cockatiels, conures, and maybe lovebirds.

Battle Pigeon posted:

I would cross lovebirds off the list, if you want them to get along with Fuji, and be wary of conures in that regard. Consider also lineolated parakeets?

Today is "Agree with Battle Pigeon" all the time day for me. If one of your primary criteria for bird #2 is that they can cohabitate/be bros with Fuji, I would NOT get a conure. Conures are sweet and cuddly to their favorite person/people but they can be very aggressive towards people and other birds as well. I tried really hard to get Ozzy and Sprite to be friendly towards each other, and it would last a minute until Sprite did a budgie thing or Ozzy did a conure thing and then they would want to battle and I'd have to separate them. If you get a conure it's extremely likely that they will not be able to share a cage and may or may not be able to get along outside of the cage.

Obviously the risk with other birds is there too but a conure beak is way bigger than a lineonlated parakeet or cockatiel beak. Conures are aggressive. They are awesome cuddlers (which is adorable :3:) but they can also get riled up and bitey pretty frequently too. That or Ozzy is just an rear end in a top hat and all other conures are angels :(

No, this is true. They're tiny little things with Napoleon complexes. Amadeus loves me desperately and wants to spend 24 hours a day on/around me but he is also Big Bad And Ferocious and spends half of his time racing across my desk or keyboard to attack nail polish bottles and plastic cups.

This is really, really good to know. I'd love to have a conure, but I think it'll have to wait. I've also heard mixed messages about tiels. Some posters say that they're totally chill bird potatoes, others say that it'd be an issue. The only tiel I've ever met was my mom's old man bird, and he was an only bird. He was a total sweetheart to my mom and other ladies, but hella mean/bitey to everyone else.

A female cockatiel would probably be better for you, unless you can either get a young male perhaps hand raised with other birds, or can check out the bird beforehand. A male would be more likely to sing/talk than a female but females tend to be even more laid back. On the other hand, females have potential egg issues, and you can help reduce hormonal behaviour so it's a pretty individual thing. Besides, how can you resist a face like this:

I think the main issue in cohabitation, regardless of whether you go with a 'tiel or linnie or Neophema parakeet or whatever, will be the budgie himself (sorry Fuji!). Budgies are high-energy, high-activity, pushy little birds that can drive cagemates nuts. An illustration: I have to keep the seven-year-old housed separately from the 10+-year-old geezer because the "kid" is so nosy, hyper, and attention-whoring that he'll pester the old fart nonstop when they're together, and the old guy is too elderly and tired to deal with it. And they're both budgies.

I've seen stories about budgies living with cockatiels and Bourke's parakeets and whatnot, and while it works out fine sometimes, a lot of the stories start with "yeah, the budgie's a holy terror to the other birds, he pisses them off nonstop".

So keep that in mind. I think that at a minimum, a very large cage with lots of toys/distractions will be necessary. Fuji + hypothetical new bird buddy will need space to get away from each other. Maybe get a cage that can be divided if worst comes to worst? That way the two birds can maintain a social relationship without injuring each other.

I posted a few weeks back after having moved into a flat with a cockatiel. It's going pretty well, I have breakfast with him most mornings. He gets a little serving in a cup.

Is it okay to let him out of his cage and leave him to his own devices if I'm working in another part of the house? He seems content to sit on top of his cage and whistle at the wild birds he can hear outside.

I wouldn't if you're not in the room just because they can get themselves in trouble. A cockatiel may be too derpy to do so, but still, I'd supervise.

Depends on whether they're mature and knowledgeable about their surroundings.

For example, our 20+ year old cockatiel lived in the same room for two decades. He could be out unsupervised. There was nothing he didn't know about that room and nothing scared him in terms of noises outside.

But many, particularly younger cockatiels, will get scared all of a sudden, jump, fly into a window, get tangled, or get loose from the room and possibly fly outside the door.

So my answer is depends on the bird.

Seems like a great bird btw-- what is he eating in the cup?

I think it depends on how socialized they are, yeah. Niko is really chill with me and my mom, but everyone else usually gets the cold shoulder. At this point he doesn't bite anyone else in the house, and I'm training him to get comfortable with my brother when I move out for college, but for now he gets anxious without me or her nearby.

So if Olo and his girlfriend decide that it's a go, I'll soon have a sweet little amazon to feed red peppers to. I decided that, short of getting another budgie, that I was gonna have to keep any new bird separate from Fuji regardless of what happened. So I decided that if Olo decides to go ahead with rehoming Babs and goes with me, that I'd be more than happy to give her a new home. If he decides to keep her, that's alright too. I've decided to just look around the various rescues and breeders in the area until I find a bird that suits me. Either way, I'm gonna end up with a second bird buddy to feed fruits and veggies to, laugh when they try to sing along to metal, and give so many treats and loves and scritches to. I'm just goinna be a crazy bird lady and I am totally cool with that.

If they aren't socialized they can be jerks like most birds can. Males are also a little more aggressive. My male is often a jerk to the other two tiels but he's a total pushover when it comes to humans. Generally speaking though the cockatiel definition of a jerk is less painful than other birds because they're too stupid to really mess with you.

Burts been gone a little crazy lately. He's about 4 months old, and I am thinking perhaps he is going through his molt. There are a lot of downy like feathers each day in his cage that I never noticed before, but he has become quite agitated, no longer coming out so nice as he used to. Hoping this is irritation from the molt because it is like he has regressed even past when we first got him.

Love all the photos recently, especially bell-hat, a puffed up Nugget (such a great cockatiel name), and

Those tail feathers are beautiful, the colours make a great backdrop for painting on.

Shittier quality even than usual-apparently it was on the wrong setting-but here's Ohtori playing with a JINGLY BALL

I tried to teach him to fetch the ball but it just makes him too angry and he ends up biting/rolling over and kicking his feet/throwing it about.

Iro's behaviour towards me hasn't improved very much. I can't pet her or spend time with her. She just wants to tear me to pieces, but she loves my boyfriend, and he loves her too. It makes having to deal with her during the day when he's at work incredibly difficult because she tries to rip me apart any time I try to replace her food or water, or even get close to her cage. She takes treats from me though just fine because she is a greedy bint. A friend got us a clicker which I've been using, it hasn't changed her much.
We used to have such a fun relationship. She was so nice to me and my boyfriend for ages, and for Bird Reasons™ I guess she just completely rejected me. It honestly makes not resenting her really, really difficult, because she was supposed to be my bird and she bonded to me first and then was great with both of us. Green Cheek Conures are supposed to be flock birds, not one-people birds... It's just such a personal thing, and I have to kind of try to see it as not being personal.
I've basically resigned myself to having Iro be my boyfriend's bird and not mine. I'm not really OK with that, but what else can I do?
It'd be really great if she'd stop screaming for me whenever I leave the room to go for a piss. Bird, you don't even like me. All the negative sides of a bird loving you without the positives.

I got a little leopard gecko now who likes me. It makes not being able to interact with Iro in the ways I'd like to a little easier to deal with, but it's still hard.

Blee. That's a really crappy situation noodles. This is all just off the top of my head, but has your boyfriend tried icing her out? Or maybe only giving her attention when you're trying to handle her/when you're around her?

It'll require a fair bit of discipline on his part, but I know that pairing good with bad (millet to new hand) can sometimes transform the bad to good. On the flipside, if the two of you have her out together and she does something nasty to you, HE should put her back in the cage immediately, and maybe both of you ignore her?

No guarantees on any of that, but you may get lucky!

Oh hey, I was wondering how you and Iro were doing lately (and a bunch of other missing posters. Come back to us!). It's cool that you still have her, despite all the difficulties she puts you through. How old is she? If I remember rightly she's younger than Ohtori, so might still be going through puberty, and dealing with all the hormones etc before settling into adulthood. She'd be likely to calm down a bit more if that were the case. Is she clipped? That often reduces aggression. If she talks or makes other noises, have you tried encouraging those so she'll make those noises when you leave to get you to respond?
