Hi guys,

I've been contemplating selling my R6 because I think I am over my initial infatuation with a super sport. I had read a lot of people saying that the SV 650 is a great bike, so I've been looking for one, and I saw this one:

http://miami.craigslist.org/brw/mcy/4651907448.html

There is also this one:

http://fortmyers.craigslist.org/lee/mcy/4646769515.html but it has a dent in the tank, and that whole side looks like its in pretty rough shape.

It's a 2008 with a GSXR front, 11k miles and they ask $3500 for it. I've seen some 04's without any extras and less miles go for 3000 obo, is the 08 with the other fork worth the extra money?

Thanks in advance!

An informational void capable only of creating noise

I've been looking for a good value SV650 for a while with the intent of buying one this winter after doing my training in the next few months(I'm in the UK). This one just popped up near enough to me to be able to go out and have a look.

It's a Gen 1 naked, while I prefer the sound of the Gen 2 SV650 due to nice things like fuel injection and a digital speedo, the price looks really good for the miles it has, and as it's coming from a trade shop that is offering a full MOT and service before it leaves I wouldn't have too many concerns over the reliability from my own limited experience.

Here's the advert: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201409037093014/ Price is £1,295 with just under 20k miles. Does this look like a good bike, and is there anything in particular I should watch out for if I go to have a look and potentially buy the bike this weekend?

While I'm asking, here's another one that caught my eye. Similar price, but for an '04 Gen 2 in a lovely silver colour: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201409107277396/p This one is not from a dealer, but it has a recent MOT. No road tax but that's not a big deal to me as it doesn't imply any actual problems with the bike itself. Only problem is I don't have any way to transport it myself. and with it not being taxed I wouldn't be able to convince the PO to deliver it either.

Have you thought about a CB400 superfour? Rode one a few months back and had a blast on it. They're also supposedly bomb-proof (build quality was definitely good). Definitely more common.

Mar 7, 2003

I loved my Bandit 400. It was light, flickable and the engine was so much fun to wring out. It's also a really good looking bike.

That being said, it was a pain finding parts for and it seems like the best fuel tank you're going to find will only have moderate perforation from rust.

If I found a clean one at a good price I'd buy another. I bet a fork swap to get better internals and new brakes would make it that much more fun.

Hey all.

I'm thinking of picking up a motorbike again. I sold mine a while ago now as it wasn't fitting in with my commute, and I had to be sensible and get money together to buy a house and stuff. BORING.

I previously had a Bandit 600S, then followed that up with a Bandit 1200S. Loved that bike. Torque for days, and handled everything. I put a Givi top box on it as well to make it even more commuter-friendly.

So, what should I consider? I _could_ just get another B12, but would like to try something different.

THINGS I LIKED ABOUT THE B12: The seating position. Very comfy. Torque for days. Bulletproof. Did about 20k miles with nothing going wrong.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: Not the best suspension in the world. Heavy.

I also had an SV650 as a loan bike briefly. I really liked it. Light, nippy, sounded gorgeous!

Not really thinking budget wise at the moment. Just want a steer towards possibilities.

I just finished the beginner motorcycle safety course here in Palm Springs and I was hoping you guys could give me some advice on what bike to get. I rode a Rebel (mid '00s) and it wasn't terribly comfortable, but I am more interested in the cruiser style than sport or adventure styles. I felt I wasn't able to stretch my legs out far enough on the bike when moving. This could be due to the bike being beat to poo poo and a new one would be adjustable, but again, I just started so I don't know enough about it! I'm going to go to the local yamaha dealership to see what feels better as well as Harley (but I don't have the money for one nor do I want one...) so I have a better idea of what I do want.

In the meantime, I have $4k to spend on the bike (I can spend as much as I want on safety gear). Used is not only fine but preferable. Can someone give me some suggestions? Thanks!

You couldn't stretch your legs because the rebel is a small (and lovely) bike. Most bikes aren't adjustable to your body proportions without at least a modicum of money and work put in so you're better off getting something that fits you ok to start with; unless you're Andre the giant being too cramped isn't a problem you're likely to have on the majority of cruisers anyway. That being said, cruisers are fundamentally just Not As Comfortable as a standardish sort of bike like an ADV or sport tourer or generic Japanese naked bike. But each to their own.

If you don't want a Harley sportster, get a triumph Bonneville or any metric cruiser under 800-odd cc and you'll be fine. I'm not familiar with American prices but someone else will be along very shortly to help you out.

I am not seeing a whole lot, and I don't know what other Craigslist is close, but I saw these:

http://palmsprings.craigslist.org/mcy/4649880090.html
I have this bike, in the 2006 flavor. Overall pretty happy with it. I paid $3130 for mine, 10k miles, because the guy was selling it going through/after a divorce and wanted the cash. 1300cc engine will be just fine for highway riding or city riding. I had a Shadow 600 previously and the 600cc engine struggled to get over 70 mph. If you are looking for a cruiser, I would look at 750cc and larger just so your engine doesn't sound like it's going to explode when you try to do over 70. Kelley Blue Book lists this bike at $4100 in excellent condition, so I think that this seller is priced fair at $3350. If you go with this bike, I'd ask the seller if they have the original exhaust and not just the baffles; some people on vtxoa.com will buy aftermarket exhaust since most people go with loving loud exhaust and it's just annoying to hear when you ride.

http://palmsprings.craigslist.org/mcy/4662427544.html
This also came up, 650cc but would be just fine to start on. If you're just looking to get a bike to go around town on and not do any long distance riding, this would be fine. No pictures, so I don't know how bad of shape the seat is in, but you can find replacement seats for a couple hundred bucks. I think this person is a bit overpriced at $2500. Kelley Blue Book lists a 2000 VStar 650 Classic at $2200 from dealer in excellent condition, which I'm assuming this bike is not. If you contact the seller and can get some pictures, I'd go in offering $1700-1800 and explain that $2500 is way over KBB value and you think that is a more fair price. If the seller will include saddlebags and a windshield, then I'd throw in another $150 or so.

http://palmsprings.craigslist.org/mcy/4662125187.html
Priced this low, I'm wondering what's going on with this. No way a guy sells a $12k motorcycle for $2500 unless it's stolen/wrecked/blew up the engine. Or it's a scam.

Yeah, there isn't that much around here it seems. Los Angeles/San Diego is a 2 hour ride back, but I do have a friend that would be willing to ride a bike back for me (since I have just started I don't want to take it on the interstate yet). The first one is over an hour away but definitely worth the trip to check out. I have an email out to the first bike's owner asking about the exhaust. I've also asked for pictures of the second bike. The third is probably a scam, even though they say they want to not make payments anymore. It seems like they want $2500 AND for you to take over payments, which to me would be a scam unless they only owe a few more grand on the bike.

I did find this bike and they said it was registered until the end of this month. Is there anything I should be wary of? This is in California. KBB lists it at $3750 for excellent condition at a dealer. Assuming it is in good condition, would $3500 be too much? It looks like it is in decent condition from the pictures. I'm going to go sit on it this weekend and see if I like it.

Honda Shadow 750 is a cruiser easy mode. All the weight down below, good initial torque and you won't get in trouble with the throttle. RS/Spirit model is a standard configuration, while Aero/Phantom is lowered with feet-forward position. I'd recommend the former for better control or later for comfort. The maintenance intervals are cheap and rare, and there is plenty of aftermarket for anything you may want to add to it. I just took a 300 mile trip on my 2012 Phantom, it was doing just fine at 80, sometimes climbing to 100 on long stretches. No complaints other than that oem seat gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours. Luckily there are loads of aftermarket options. You can find a carburated early 2000's bike for around 2 grand, in my area at least. That VTX1300 posted above is bigger/heavier/more powerful version of the Shadow.

Slip picking in your area, wow. I'd pay about $2750 for this one, less if it needs tires or other maintenance items

I never thought of myself as a cruiser guy either, but looking honestly at the kind of riding I do, I don't do any touring, longest ride to date has been 3-4 hours. Don't push hard on the street because I'm 34, I've seen people do too much dumb stuff for that. Might as well get a cruiser, though I don't like the chrome/blinged out look. Only thing is the forward controls and comfort don't really go well together, though the controls on the Hammer are supposed to be pretty configurable.

Victory Hammer/Gunner are gorgeous bikes and they seem to try really hard to do everything better than a Harley. Did you test ride it yet?

As for forward controls, they pay off on the highway, where turns are long and sweeping. On tight city streets, you'll be forced to slow down more than other bikes and generally use more effort to turn.

How far is Tijuana?

Edit: I missed the Spirit you posted earlier. Definitely go sit on it. Then make some comments about the price may be a bit steep. Give them your info and leave. Call back next day and offer 3300. I bet you can get it for that price.

Tijuana is farther than San Diego. You can google map Indio, CA if you want to see exactly where I am. The Palm Springs CL is the only one close enough to not make a day trip out of seeing a bike. LA is going to be at least 4 hours round trip. Same with San Diego. Pheonix is 8 round trip. I'm going to sit on the bike hopefully on Wednesday, I'll let you know what I think of it.

Did you hear anything back for the VTX1300? I like Nitrox's idea about offering $3300 for the Shadow 750, but if it were me, I'd at least go look at the VTX. They're both about the same price, and that way you can see which you like better, which is more comfortable to sit on, etc. I think you'll be happy with either of them. If you do get the VTX, I would highly recommend a different seat from the stock one. I did a three hour ride on it and it was like riding on plywood after an hour. I'm looking for a new seat for mine. Are you going to be doing any two-up riding?
