Fun run! I'm glad I could end my bastardly captaining days on a high note, a mighty *psssssh!* to mark the conclusion to all our aspirations. Feel free to toss me into the roster again if you have a slot open, and I'll show my pugilistic ways with a belt sander and a miter saw or however those engi folk do it. You good on ship names? Otherwise I wouldn't mind serving on the We Come In Peace or the No You Shut Up or the Khan Did Nothing Wrong.

ProfessorBooty, have you looked into Captain's Edition at all? It's a mod that adds tons of crazy stuff and you might like it. Requires some setup but the thread where you can get it does a good job outlining what needs to be done. http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15663 It adds so much stuff it is like going in blind again. edit. Also down to being a part of your crew if you want some more variety!

There was a lot of discussion between me and Jack on this one and I'm going to address it quickly here: It would have been a good idea to get the 30 scrap ion weapon. My guess is any 30 scrap weapon (other than repair or heal burst) would be a good idea. I still stand by my decision to wait and hope for something better, though.

This ship is odd, since it has so many systems to start. I would have tried to get more crew, myself, but that's just me being paranoid about certain things.

That drone seller only does damage if you waste his time by not buying anything. Oh, and the third thing he sells is a system upgrade.

Yeah, Prof.'s commentary about the Engi B is pretty much accurate. The ship is bottom-tier for a reason, especially on Hard mode where enemies man their engines for that 5% extra evade per projectile. He also got pretty lucky in that he didn't run into many boarding encounters, and those that did never boarded in the piloting. That's basically the worst thing that can happen to this ship. I think he did a fine job piloting the ship for the most part - the only thing I'd mention is that it's a bad idea to buy repairs in the first couple of sectors. Instead it's better to cruise around at 10 to 15 hull, but with some extra spending money for weapons, engines 2, piloting 2, and such.

That drone distraction technique with the second weapon was great. While this thread has taught me how to win this game at all, I'm by no means good at it. And I'm far from unlocking all ships. Today I had a run with the Federation Cruiser B. I happened to run into some good weapons and thought I was set for the boss. But in the end apparently my defence wasn't as good as I thought. I won. With one hull point left. That last battle was intense.

It's a really good mod, it actually makes jumps with no enemies not a waste of time, adds trading, adds morale(aka don't be too much of a dick or the crew might mutiny, etc) It also has the option to add randomly statted weapons(think borderlands prefixes), and it also rebalances some of the ships. If you do a video with the mod I'll throw my name in the hat, just in case you'll get some of my horrible luck Nalesh fucked around with this message at 12:35 on Sep 15, 2014 |

Shei-kun posted:This discourages Clone Bay Boarding Tactics and that makes me sad. Morale only comes into play with certain event options like if you buy slaves or attack a civilian for no reason there is a random chance a crewmember will turn hostile. Although some ships come with special blue options by default and let you do certain things with no penalty, so if you're on a Slug ship you can accept a surrender then kill them anyway with no fuzz because when you're captain of a Slug ship people expect you to be a huge rear end in a top hat.

# ? Sep 16, 2014 10:52 |

It's actually not a random chance they turn hostile afaik, each of them has a hidden morale meter, and if you do enough bad poo poo in a row they leave at the end of the fight, and if it goes high enough in one shot they turn hostile instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCnFESIbvnY Sectors 3 and 4 for The Rifle. I'll be looking at recording a Captains Edition run. I haven't installed the mod yet, and I'm also out of ship names. What I would like is for some votes on ship names, ship layouts, and the game difficulty (normal or hard). As far as ships are concerned, it would be good if people chose Captain Edition layouts only (I'm assuming they exist. I'm avoiding spoilers on the mod). But otherwise I'll just fly whatever. Ya really need to pay attention when you decide to backtrack this is at least the second time you have passed a visited node rather than an new one.my dad posted:First you ignore the firebomb, then you ignore the teleporter. I don't think a TP would be all that useful when he dosen't even have a full crew, and the best combat guys he has are a rock and a buff engie. Best boarding ship 2 Lanius and 2 boarding drones, That I think would be hillrious. Captains addition is a odd mod I found it to have a few questionable alterations from the moment I installed it, some weird nerfs and odd buffs Flak I for example only fires 2 shots and the Glaive beam is no longer on the stealth replaced with a long beam that only does 2 dammage.

my dad posted:First you ignore the firebomb, then you ignore the teleporter. Only three weapon slots. Three weapon slots is an extreme disadvantage, and really narrows what weapons you should use (unless the weapons are free). I'll board with the Engi B, but its typically not until sector 6 or 7 when I make that decision. The lack of crew and resources in general necessitate that. Unfortunately the Engi B just isn't an exciting ship, whether things go well or not, and its gimmick only lasts the first four sectors until you adapt some sort of 'known good' strategy.

If I remember right, captains edition actually tries to make the engi B worthwhile by giving it an AI system where you can try and start up holograms to use other systems.

Calling it now, the run will end when a 4 damage missile gets past your defense drone because it decided to shoot down a laser instead. Its really dumb how this "upgrade" of being able to target anything completely cripples the Defense II.

From the Neverhood action-platformer, Universe Enema could be a good one for an absolutely lethal ship that flushes the galaxy's colons of rebel detritus. My other suggestion is Spaceballs: The Spaceship. Otherwise I vote for Khan Did Nothing Wrong.

On balance, the Defense II becomes ridiculously good if paired with a Defense I, and the Engi B is one of the few ships that can reasonably swing that later on, especially once you've got enough crew you don't need the personnel drones, and even more so if you have a drone recovery arm (which typically makes this strategy 'warp into sector, activate god-mode, laugh all the way to the bank'). It's still a VERY niche role, however. The one time outside of that that I got much use out of the Defense II involved an unwise decision to remain at 2 shields all the way up to sector 7 or so. That run didn't go so well.

Defense I + Defense II is a classic drone defense setup. If you're going Drone Control in the first place, then you will have a Defense I drone (because why the hell else would you get Drone Control?); if you have some spare scrap towards the end then it can be worth picking up a Defense II to go with it. A Defense II on its own is going to let you down more often than not, though.
