That's rarely the case since nineties. Most films are dubbed in Russia for cinema releases and pirated after that.

American TV shows are dubbed by enthusiasts and semi-professionals and sometimes are picked up and dubbed for TV.

On that note, I know that when House M.D. aired in Belarus it was dubbed in Russian by Belarusian actors.

In a sense it is predictable, simply because there isn't really any other major powers opposing the US, so there is a kneejerk reaction to one that does. Putin's Russia doesn't have anything to do with socialism though beyond some crippled public services.

That said, I think the origin for the shift is many many people (including Americans) are sick of US policy, and some of them make poor or cynical decision on whom to support to oppose it.

Yeah, it's pretty understandable why someone would find the US' neoconservative foreign policy objectionable and self-defeating. It's always funny when people decide to express their disapproval by backing a leader whose policies are arguably worse, though.

Yeah, it is a kneejerk reaction, that includes a lot of mis-assumptions about what Russia especially is. If assumptions cycle-back on each other, conservatives proudly proclaim Russia is "just those old Soviets with their communism" and some self-proclaim leftists think they are right about that part. It has come up a bit in this thread at times.

I think part of it is there is ingrained distrust of the Western media, coupled with the fact that the Western media in general has done a terrible job of approaching the conflict.

That said, I think there is a reason some far-leftists/far-rightist support Putin together (including Alex Jones), both want to see the current system go. The irony though is while Putin is far closer to the far-right side of the spectrum, both sides in Europe are basically supporting an authoritarian rightist on their own doorstep. It is bringing together groups who want to end the current system...for very different reasons, and to be honest some of it is the job Putin had done with his propaganda. RT attempts to appeal to libertarians, far-right types, leftists and conspiracy nuts all at the same time.

Russia calls on Europe to counter modern expansionism.

http://rt.com/politics/188172-russian-romanian-moldovan-unification/

quote:

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has denounced Romanian PM Victor Ponta’s plan to unify Moldova with Romania by 2018 as “inadmissible and irresponsible,” and called for all European countries to counter modern expansionism.

Prime Minister Ponta, announced last week that he was entering the race for the Romanian presidency, and said that if elected he would make the unification of Romania and Moldova his main objective.

“We consider it irresponsible and inadmissible to multiply such statements when an election campaign is under way in Moldova. We expect the Chisinau authorities to give an adequate appraisal of these words. We also hold that a reaction must follow from Brussels and other European capitals,” the Russian Foreign ministry said in a statement.

Russian diplomats added that authorities in Moscow were concerned how certain Bucharest circles have annexation plans concerning the sovereignty and neutrality of Moldova.

Romanian nationalists have had plans to annex Moldova ever since it emerged as an independent nation in the early 1990s. Bucharest officials introduced a simplified citizenship procedure for Moldovans and thousands of people have already used it, especially after Romanians received the right of visa free travel in the EU.

This year Romania sponsored a national census in Moldova, and the Romanian ambassador told reporters that his country was interested in the number of Moldovans who spoke Romanian and considered themselves Romanians.

Moldova signed an Association Agreement with the EU in June this year and ratified it in July. After this move Moscow warned Chisinau that it would cause a review of trade links between Russia and Moldova. In addition, Russian Deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin said that the agreement violated the basic rights of residents of the Russian-speaking breakaway Republic of Transdniester. Rogozin also promised Russia’s fully-fledged support to the region.

In the same speech Rogozin attacked Moldova’s pro-EU position, saying that this course was countering “life’s natural logic,” as about 700,000 Moldovan citizens are now working in Russia as labor migrants, and their earnings are supporting the state budget of their homeland.

Well, the really interesting part about this to me is how much it's reminiscent of Russia's geopolitical strategies in the same part of the world a hundred years ago: supporting the unification of some states into one, opposing the same thing in the countries next door.
