Also, for what it's worth, the update looks really nice.

Looks like the update is only for Apple TV 3. Do apple TV 2's still sell for crazy megabucks on eBay? I still have a 2, and I jailbroke it once but didn't like it, so now I just use stock. If I can still sell it and buy a 3 and still make a profit, I probably will.

Anyone ever see problems with movies streamed from iTunes on a Mac getting jerky after playing for awhile? Like there will be a scene with what should be a smooth pan but it isn't actually smooth and kinda skips. It gets worse the longer it plays, but if I stop and restart the movie, it fixes it. Not all movies though. Maybe the bitrate is too high?

Yeah, it probably is because of the older internals of the second gen, but I guess I had erroneously assumed that the Apple TV version of iOS is stripped down enough that the requirements of normal iOS aren't really relevant. Now I need to decide whether it's worth upgrading or if I should continue to hold out for new hardware.

You're not missing out on much. Isn't family sharing the only real new feature? Is that not in the latest update for the second gen, too?

1080p video is the biggest difference.

There's nothing in this update that I feel like I'm missing out on, it's more about knowing that I'm probably not going to be getting any major new features in the future. I guess the easy answer is to just stick with what I have until there's something I want that it actually can't do, rather than worrying about hypothetical future updates.

Yeah, for instance, you will never get a Beats music channel, even though there's no technical reason it can't be on the ATV 2.

fwiw I sold both of my ATV2s for $200 each on eBay after jailbreaking them, enough to buy 2 refurbished ATV3s and have money in my pocket. If you have an ATV2 that you aren't using jailbroken it's a no brainer.

Do you guys think there is any chance of an update this year? I'm really surprised there is not a new model yet. Especially with stiffer competition.

e.pilot posted:Yup, I was able to jailbreak mine this summer after keeping them updated without any problems. To be clear, you can only jailbreak fw version 5.3 on the appletv2. Further, if you didn't save your device's SHSH blobs for 5.3 and it is currently running something like 6.2, you will not be able to downgrade it to 5.3 or jailbreak it.

Apple is still signing 5.3 (6.1.4) on the atv 2 so no, you don't need to have saved blobs. Just need to have the right ipsw, but that's not too hard to find - here for example. ed- this means you can also downgrade fine, too (atv 2 only). Hold alt/option while you click restore in iTunes after connecting the atv to your computer via usb, and then select the ipsw you downloaded. Itunes then does a complete wipe/restore of the atv with the ipsw you selected, and once it's all finished you can go ahead and jailbreak like usual.

Thanks, been trying to find info on this for like a year now and didn't know it was possible so the 6.1.4 is the one I want right?

Can an Apple TV be set to include ONLY music in the computers menu? Wondering if I can leave videos shared in iTunes, without them actually popping up on the TV. I feel like I had seen an option for this before, but it might have just been within iTunes itself.

Has anyone been having issues with the remote app since iOS 8? When I first open the app everything works fine but if I go back in to pause or use the controls the app gets into this strange loop where it shows the controls then the library screen and back to controls. The only way I know to fix this is to close the app completely and reopen it. Am I the only one with issues?

Since iOS 8, I have an issue with the one of my Apple TVs not showing up under the remote app when its in sleep mode (my MacBook and the bedroom ATV show up). I can see the missing ATV under 'airplay', so I can wake-up it up there or use the physical remote. Once it is awoken that ATV shows up the remote app. The only difference one is an ATV2 and the other is an ATV3 (this is the one not showing). I'm at work I can't remember if they are on the same software version or not (I need to check).

I also have that problem with one of my ATVs - in addition, sometimes my ATVs show up twice in my AirPlay list (once with their name, and once as "Apple TV" and "Apple TV-LC" which has no correlation to their names.) Airplay has also been flakey - one of the ATVs won't airplay video, etc etc. I think there are some bugs Apple needs to work out with the last ATV update.

Paging Kenderama Or any other helpful souls who are familiar with the Plex hack on ATv3. (OpenPlex to be specific.) Today, in trying to make my iMac run better on the network, I went from wireless to wired. I also started up a 5ghz wifi network alongside my 2.4. My ATV is on the 5ghz now. I also updated to 7.0.1 (latest) ATV 3 software. Even before the update on my ATV, my Plex wasn't working on ATV. I eventually surmised it was because my Mac probably had a new IP now. I manually changed the DNS entry on my ATV to reflect the IP my iMac had. No dice. I went through re-adding the certificates per the OpenPlex instructions. (http:trailers.apple.com/trailers.cer etc etc...) And would instantly get an error that the ATV could not connect to that to make the certificate. It would fail. Hmmm.. I read that I should try <my mac's IP>/trailers.cer which took just fine on my ATV as a new profile, but I *Still* cannot get it to connect to OpenPlex. When I set OpenPlex to hijack Trailers app (or iMovie Theater app) they both just come up with their regular normal behaviors. (not Plex.) Please help, if anyone knows... I rely on Plex a TON on my ATV3 to watch movies and stuff with my wife after the kid goes to sleep. Thanks!

Okay some questions for you Feenix 1) is your iMac connected/wired to same router that serves your 5ghz network? Please provide the following info: iMac: (Under Network System Prefs) AppleTV: And finally the results from a ping and trace route to the AppleTV's IP - open your Terminal.app and do the following: If you can't ping/traceroute it means they are on different networks. (For example, when I was writing up this post I realized my Office AppleTV I use on the treadmill was on my Guest network, which does NOT have access to my iMac's network. Once I moved it to the correct internal network they could see each other. I think that is what is happening with you.) Hope this helps! I'll check back later / tonight and see how you do. Oh my god has anybody else found AirPlay to be a total chore from iOS 8 devices? What the gently caress did they do that for? I find that half the time I can't even get it to start working (when I select my AppleTV from the list it hangs for a while and then exits the menu with nothing selected) and it almost never works if I'm already watching a video on the phone when I start AirPlay. God, it was so easy before. Makes me glad I still have an iOS 6 device knocking around to do all my AirPlaying from because it just sucks from my iPhone 5C.

I've noticed that lately my Apple TV won't wake up from sleep using the remote app. I have to use the physical remote but then it works fine. On the other hand I used to have problems with the airplay option not appearing on my 5 at all until I woke up the tv. Now on my 6 it's always there at least, even if it doesn't always work. Basically I've always found the Apple TV to be kind of finicky. When it works it's great but it can be a chore at times.
