And yet, she is still half (or even a quarter!) of the weight of the intended target audience of that image.

The whole "Marilyn Monroe was a size fourteen!" thing bugs the hell out of me. First of all, when I was in school it was size twelve. Then it went to fourteen, and now I see people saying she was a sixteen. Bullshit, she was 5'5 and had a 35 inch bust, a 22 inch waist, and 35 inch hips. She wasn't skinny but she was far from fat. In the costume calls for her films, the studio listed her as weighing between 115 and 118lbs. In current dressmaker sizing, she wore a 2.

I think it's great to say "Look, she had flaws and she was still physically beautiful, don't feel like you have to be perfect," but that's a long way from straight-up making poo poo up. (Especially since what most people think of as a sixteen today was a 20-22 in the dressmaker sizing of Monroe's day.)

If it was recently then you should link to articles about how drug testing the poor actually cost Florida taxpayers more money than if they left it alone.

I actually linked one of the articles about that when my mom posted the mentioned image. She took down the image. She also took down another macro that talked about how welfare recipients always have super awesome cell phones because they waste money after I mentioned that it's probably the phone they get with their plan with whatever company they sign up with. I don't believe I've seen any other "gently caress the poors!"-type images since those two.

It was yesterday and I did exactly that, as well as linking to the one from Tennessee. All he did was talk about how the tests aren't reliable because "everyone can pass a scheduled drug test when money is involved," and those who passed the tests just weren't showing up positive because of that. He also claimed he knew a guy who took a drug test within 24 hours of doing a bunch of drugs and he came up clean while citing that 90% of the people he knew on welfare were also on drugs. :suicide: I just gave up on him.

So what the Hell is the point of testing welfare recipients if you can't catch them anyway? Go touch the poop some more and ask them why they want to throw good money after bad.

(Hmmm. Welfare isn't wasted money, of course. Don't know of another phrase though. I suppose it's bad money in captain drug test's mind though, so the point stands.)

Was the antivax friend being sarcastic, or do they not understand numbers?

It's weird to think that someone would see that headline and not realize that 360% means that anyone who has had vaccines would be autistic 3 times over. Like, I figured everyone knows that 100% means all of something.

Also, your pharmacist friend's graph is amazing.

I'm sure they intended the headline to mean "The actual number of autism cases is 340% higher than the current projections due to LIES and CORRUPTION hiding the TRUTH," but they clearly have no understanding of statistics so they had no loving idea how to word the thought.

ooooh. So it's 340% of zero. Got it.

Here's a cnn article talking about what that article was trying to say along with more background information for anyone who's interested. It is a new study, but sounds like it's also flawed, like first one.

Exactly. Everyone covered under the ACA has an insurance card from an independent insurance company (except maybe the Medicaid expansion). The old plans that weren't under the ACA have mainly been fazed out.

I know this is from a bit back, but as far as Medicaid goes, whether you applied for it directly or got it through the ACA, it's the same state issued card it's always been. In my case I don't know if everyone had to do the same or because I had previously been on a from the hospital payment plan for care, but when setting up my first appointment with my new doctor, I did have to call a different line than his office to make sure they had all my correct information on hand before setting me up with his office to make the appointment.

Well, the headline makes no mention of if the autism cases are linked to vaccinations. The implication seems to be that the CDC only recognizes autism not associated with vaccinations and then expunges the rest to support the LIES.

So really, it's just a big-sounding number pulled from their rear end to make sense of how so few children vaccinated actually end up with autism.

Time Square, tourism spot or not, is pretty breathtaking if you've never been to New York before. I live in Florida and Downtown Orlando just pales in comparison. We went a few days after Christmas too so the weather was cold and awesome, and the big christmas tree was up. Every building around you just massive. It was the first time I'd ever been to New York and was pretty in awe of it.

I know in at least one of the states, the politicians (or someone in their family) had a big stake in some of the labs selected to do the testing. So it was basically a way to funnel a bunch of money into their investment under the guise of catching all those "welfare queens" and stuff.

It would probably be interesting to see how he would attempt to defend that even though I know ultimately there's no convincing these people that (1) welfare won't make you rich and (2) most people use it for necessities instead of brand-new luxury cars filled with cocaine.

Exactly. If you go to NYC, you should swing by Times Square. It's full of bright lights which make good photos and there's a big M&M store to buy treats for people back home. I did a million things while in NYC for my week and I still went through there on my last day because holy poo poo, it's not as if it's in the middle of nowhere. It took maybe 30 minutes total out of my walk/metro back to Brooklyn, and everyone loved the poo poo I brought back to the UK.

Some people posting in this thread like that Times Square being a tourist haven is a big secret and only "real" New Yorkers know this. If you believe that, I've got some hot info on London you'll just eat up! Did you know that Trafalgar Square is also a tourist area? You won't find this kind of underground news anywhere else online!

(Everyone I talked to in NYC was super nice, and we made friends everywhere we went).

Haha yeah. I'm métis and I have found it's a matter of personal preference. Some people don't care at all, some people care A LOT. I've met many Ojibwe people who are preferring "anishnaabe", the Ojibwe word for "people". I had someone filling out a form and asked if he could put it down, so I said yes and he goes "good, it's the only right answer." I said it was definitely a term that's being used more, he said that it should be the only one used, but it's not exactly the best term if you're, I don't know, not Ojibwe?
