if you don't imagine personality quirks and try to justify stupid decisions any time you're playing a game you're doing it wrong, even when it is not appropriate.

i try to write down a five to six page backstory for every character i make. i know that's a bit on the light side but you know what they say backstories are like skirts long enough to cover the important bits but short enough to keep it interesting lol

when i get a soldier killed in xcom i attribute it to their loose cannon personality and cavalier attitude to the chain of command and they did not follow orders properly, but really it's my fault. is this the burden of command?

In addition to giving them ridiculous names, I always apply some kind of personality to them. Generally I wind up playing them to their personalities as well, subconsciously.

You're playing XCOM wrong, think of the director as some sort of malevolent entity haunting the base and giving orders to fight aliens. Some sort of freaky military commander ghost won't give a poo poo about casualties and neither should you. That's the personality for my XCOM director anyway.

i made an imperial whose husband was a general who died in the war with the aldmeri dominion before the white-gold concordat was signed and she gets a bit survivalist crazy and goes up to skyrim to become a necromancer to find a way to live long enough to wait out the coming war with an army of undead minions in some dank dungeon

Dragon Quest 3. Ortega's revenge-crazed child is an embarrassing reminder of the king's biggest boondoggle, so as soon as they're old enough they get 120 gold pieces and a copper sword or whatever, and a sarcastic Important Mission to get the gently caress out of the country and go die in a ditch somewhere. Joined by a thief who feigns loyalty out of a need to skip town before their most recent heist is discovered, and a persistent crazy drunk who shouts obscenities at ghosts early in the morning, their unlikely tale is narrated by a the fourth member of the party, a hapless and disfavored royal auditor who's been punished with the "honor" of keeping track of the hero's traveling expenses. Together, they are the worst adventurers ever, but in the course of their journey they discover that the world really is in danger from the dark lord, that raiding ancient ruins is far more profitable than regular burglary, that the weird hobo was enlightened all along, and the power of friendship.

because there are never any strong female characters in games, i only play rpgs where you can choose the gender of my character and i make them female. i also make them confident in their sexuality so that i can install plenty of huge boob mods and lots of skimpy clothes. i also make them lsbians so as to say, "look at this hot body The Patriarchy. You will never get to touch it and it will be responsible for saving the whole world, thus showing your privelege to be even more undeserved than you realise"
