Been getting back into Tom Waits and Nick Cave, especially Orphans, Brawlers and Bastards and Murder Ballads. I've gone through both of their discographies and was wondering if anyone knew of any other artists that do similar stuff? I especially like the dark folk/country stuff that they do. Found a band recently called Those Poor Bastards that are keeping me going, but could really use another fix of delicious gothic Americana.

Check out Slim Cessna's Autoclub in general, and Jimmy Carter Syndrome, by Munly, very specifically. The Munly record will probably be right up your alley.

Massive TNAF fan, saw them live last year. Not sure about that specific song but The XX are a very similar band. That same kind of pop/dance mix with a lead female and male vocalist.

I've been listening to the soundtrack to the UK drama UTOPIA non-stop the past few days. It's totally different to what I normally listen to so I have no idea what genre or artists to look at. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. I could only find the full album online so I'll give the timestamps of my three favourite tracks on it. I can understand if that's too irritating for the thread to bother with.

You can check out Khalil Nova for something similar, but rougher. Also Issue & Big War's ep.

Also maybe try Pyramid Vritra. If you like that check out Jet Age of Tomorrow's stuff as well (although it's generally more ambient and "softer").

MAYBE El-P's stuff (particularly his first 2 albums, and Cannibal Ox's "Cold Vein").

Most of those sites don't work in my country, unfortunately.

I feel like a broken record going on about this band all the time, but Grand Magus. They have the kind of masculine "UNF! UNF!" kind of gusto to them that I'd imagine makes for great lifting music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01HKzJyXZOg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d8doOhZ7vA

And in case Grand Magus gets a bit too mid-tempo, Battle Beast is some stupidly cheesy kickass metal with awesome female vocals. Since you mentioned Sabaton I'm assuming you don't mind some silly synths, either. :v:

As a bonus wildcard rec, not exactly metal but something slightly different: Airbourne. They're AC/DC with double the energy. That's really pretty much it. I just thought "If I lifted, what would I listen to" and they fit the bill perfectly.

The band's first vocalist quit after their first album, but fortunately the replacement (the one in my first link) is just as good. The kinda snarly vocals in the chorus aren't her though, but their guitarist. But still, she can really belt it out.

Speaking of women with pipes, how do you feel about slightly heavier stuff with harsh, growly vocals? Because, well, Arch Enemy might also suit your needs:

So I'm planning for that respectable push towards a second language and all. I can't manage full immersion, but wiping my iPod of all but bands singing Japanese might help. Or at least make me feel more committed.

But I'd rather not resort to the lifetime anthologies of Ayumi Hamasaki, Hikaru Utada and Gackt. So I need your help.

I'll admit to already having albums by Chatmonchy, Galileo Galilei, The Brilliant Green/Heavenly6, Angela, Maximum the Hormone, ORESKABAND, PUSHIM, YUI and... Puffy. If that helps.

Thanks in advance.

Sotaisei Riron, all the Girls Sazanami Beat! compilations, #18 Juhachi-Bang,

Here, a bunch of fairly randomly chosen Japanese artists who sing mainly in Japanese (I did not mention artists like Shonen Knife because they sing a lot in English) of various styles that do not as far as I know have any connection to anime. You got more standard j-pop in there, punk, various types of rock, electronic stuff, depressing stuff and more folky stuff.

What would you guys say are the best electronic albums of the year? For reference, I'm not big on trance or techno. Examples of electronic I love:

- Bibio
- Daft Punk
- Jazztronik
- Capsule
- Tycho

I dunno, I'd love some more jazzy house. I'm huge on downtempo, ambient, and house, obviously. Not all kinds of house though, I'm particular for some reason.

What I've been listening to lately:

Josh Butler
Pwndtiac
Sophie
Goldroom

I guess I just want more of the long list above. It's been a while. I'm the only person I know who's big on electronic, so I always go to shows alone. :smith: So it's hard for me to branch out and learn new artists.

There's Aphex Twin's Syro which was recently released and defies categorization more or less, some is downtempo, some is slow techno, some is danceable music, but all of it is great music.

The rest of your list makes me think you might like Moderat (and also, respectively, maybe Apparat) or Four Tet

Due to the Jazz-infused stuff, I'd recommend you taking a look through Squarepusher's stuff, particularly Ultravisitor. It might not phase you at all, or you might love it like I do.

All of it is more Techno inspired, rather than house, but I don't think that'll be too much of a disturbance.

e: Please note that most of these are more "out there", and not house for the most part. Also note that Aphex Twin, while fantastic music, can take a while to get used to.
