PlatinumJukebox posted:Been getting back into Tom Waits and Nick Cave, especially Orphans, Brawlers and Bastards and Murder Ballads. I've gone through both of their discographies and was wondering if anyone knew of any other artists that do similar stuff? I especially like the dark folk/country stuff that they do. Found a band recently called Those Poor Bastards that are keeping me going, but could really use another fix of delicious gothic Americana. Check out Slim Cessna's Autoclub in general, and Jimmy Carter Syndrome, by Munly, very specifically. The Munly record will probably be right up your alley.

Could goons recommend some similar stuff? e: On a similar note, are there any bands that are like Dead Milkmen and Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers? Kinda 80s/90s rock with a sense of humour. It's totally different to what I normally listen to so I have no idea what genre or artists to look at. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. I could only find the full album online so I'll give the timestamps of my three favourite tracks on it. Also maybe try Pyramid Vritra. If you like that check out Jet Age of Tomorrow's stuff as well (although it's generally more ambient and "softer"). MAYBE El-P's stuff (particularly his first 2 albums, and Cannibal Ox's "Cold Vein").

It seriously could not be easier to find music you haven't heard of. Most of those sites don't work in my country, unfortunately. In a more specific request, I like Ne Obliviscaris. Wikipedia calls them "progressive metal" but I'm not sure if that's really a good descriptor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsh9xzTCFRk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij5X4cLk4U0 Whatever they'd be described as, recommendations would be appreciated.

Since you mentioned Sabaton I'm assuming you don't mind some silly synths, either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LSHF73w_eo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKx061hTvxw As a bonus wildcard rec, not exactly metal but something slightly different: Airbourne. They're AC/DC with double the energy. That's really pretty much it. I just thought "If I lifted, what would I listen to" and they fit the bill perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiJyXG8ysWs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-7NGFB2vZE

Grey Elephants posted:These are all great, thank you! The band's first vocalist quit after their first album, but fortunately the replacement (the one in my first link) is just as good. The kinda snarly vocals in the chorus aren't her though, but their guitarist. But still, she can really belt it out. Speaking of women with pipes, how do you feel about slightly heavier stuff with harsh, growly vocals? Because, well, Arch Enemy might also suit your needs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRkc08_dR-0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZknLY6AIw4 (they also changed vocalists just recently.)

So I'm planning for that respectable push towards a second language and all. I can't manage full immersion, but wiping my iPod of all but bands singing Japanese might help. Or at least make me feel more committed. But I'd rather not resort to the lifetime anthologies of Ayumi Hamasaki, Hikaru Utada and Gackt. So I need your help. I'll admit to already having albums by Chatmonchy, Galileo Galilei, The Brilliant Green/Heavenly6, Angela, Maximum the Hormone, ORESKABAND, PUSHIM, YUI and... Puffy. If that helps. Thanks in advance.

Sotaisei Riron, all the Girls Sazanami Beat! compilations, #18 Juhachi-Bang, 矢野顕子, 坂本慎太郎, 凛として時雨, 住所不定無職, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, きのこ帝国, tricot, Strawberry Machine, Shizuka, Pizzicato Five, Pine*AM, Nagisa Ni Te, Mayumi Kojima, Kyah, Bu☆Li/ Here, a bunch of fairly randomly chosen Japanese artists who sing mainly in Japanese (I did not mention artists like Shonen Knife because they sing a lot in English) of various styles that do not as far as I know have any connection to anime. You got more standard j-pop in there, punk, various types of rock, electronic stuff, depressing stuff and more folky stuff.

There's Aphex Twin's Syro which was recently released and defies categorization more or less, some is downtempo, some is slow techno, some is danceable music, but all of it is great music. The rest of your list makes me think you might like Moderat (and also, respectively, maybe Apparat) or Four Tet Due to the Jazz-infused stuff, I'd recommend you taking a look through Squarepusher's stuff, particularly Ultravisitor. It might not phase you at all, or you might love it like I do. All of it is more Techno inspired, rather than house, but I don't think that'll be too much of a disturbance. e: Please note that most of these are more "out there", and not house for the most part. Also note that Aphex Twin, while fantastic music, can take a while to get used to. VenusInFurries fucked around with this message at 10:29 on Sep 28, 2014 |
