There will always be an eager loyal audience for racist violence porn.

With that being said I can't pull my eyes away either. SOA is mesmerizing. It's not even like other bad shows where I can just drop them and never look back. SOA compels me to keep watching. That is the power of Mr. Sutter.

The ending twist of that episode is also incredibly stupid. Why would Jury not let the M.C. know that one of those freelancers is one of his blood relatives? It's incredibly dumb.

I just realized that, while SoA is the worst offender, almost every show I've enjoyed or just watched involved rape. For example...

Breaking Bad
The Shield
Mad Men
House of Cards
Dexter (though Dexter contested that "no one's raping anyone!")
Oz (heh)
Game of Thrones
True Detective

Any others?

Edit: Six Feet Under?

Mad Men did it well, not a scene of someone thrusting into another person with grunts and assorted noises, but basically an aggressive fiance and the woman just clocks out mentally and stares at the wall and there's silence. The scene was more then just the type of "shocking graphic rape" that Sutter seems to love.

The Shield's oral rape was...unpleasant and I think really was a bad choice for taking that character in a "dark" direction as well as being a source of blackmail.

BB I can't remember a rape scene, unless it was that one where Walt had angry sex with his wife.

Dexter: There was so much else wrong with that show I don't know where to start

GoT: Much less rape then the books, but even then it's still a lot and a symptom of the creepy old pervert writer.

True Detective: Rape and sexual abuse was a major part of the case being investigated, but there wasn't onscreen graphic rape.

Oz: Much less rape then people talk about, but was still present. Usually it was really brief or reference through the setting.

The difference between those shows and SoA is the better shows use the act of rape as a story tool, rather then just a graphic scene to shock the viewer. That people still watch SoA and think its some gritty drama astounds me, because after the Irish excursion the show's true colors came out as nothing more then basic cable shock violence-porn.

I'll always remember the quote from Shawn Ryan about how Sutter had some of the best story ideas but more often then not he'd try to write something completely over the top and get shot down for this insane ideas. And those ideas? They became SoA.

There was also the scene where the redhaired secretary turned partner with the zeppelin sized boobs (forgot her name) slept with that executive so a deal could be brokered. It had lots of rape undertones to it because she was clearly uncomfortable but basically took one for the team.

Sometimes I think the people in this thread are the only sane ones when it comes to SoA. From this week's AV Club review:

quote:

there’s a solid action set-piece, some nicely subtle character work, and, maybe most importantly, a clear sense of purpose.

The whole secretly-destroy-the-Chinese plot might be quite good if it wasn't for the fact that we know the club are barking up the wrong tree. I guess Sutter is just trying (and failing miserably ) to beat The Shield at its own game? He's probably got some plan for Gemma that he believes will top the Family Meeting too. That's gonna be horrendous.

Shawn Ryan, the creator of The Shield, once said in an interview that midway through that show's run he made to decision stop trying to top himself with shock value and plot twists and focus on telling the best story he could. Sutter instead has done the opposite. He's put storytelling telling aside and goes out of his way to make sure every episode has at least one hosed up moment that people will be buzzing about the next morning.

Specifically, Ryan originally told his writing teams to write each scene as if it was a potential cliffhanger leading up to the commercial break in order to draw as much attention away from the desire to change the channel during the ad breaks, something HBO had the luxury of not having to deal with.

Shawn Ryan also has said that later seasons were written entirely different from the normal "Writer A writes Episode 1, Writer B writes Episode 2, everyone revises together" format.

Instead, the room literally outlined and broke down each subplot entirely independent of one another - so one writer outlined and wrote everything about the armenians, whereas another writer worked on all the Shane materials - and then the room together figured out how to chop them together into individual episodes.

Its fascinating stuff if you're a structure nerd like me.

Sons, in contrast, just seems to be Kurt Sutter's ego completely unfiltered and without checks and balances. Despite all the "This writer is a tyrant!" stereotypes, its actually pretty rare. Matthew Weiner gave a great interview with Nerdist where he mentioned that his flock of writers had to sit him down halfway through last year's season and get him to radically revamp Don's relationship with Megan, for example.

Can you imagine Sutter's reaction if someone did that to him now?

Shawn Ryan has also said that Sutter had great ideas and dialogue but he had to be controlled and stopped from going too far. SoA is what happens when he's given carte blanche.

Side-note: I've never purchased this show on dvd or blu ray but I did so faithfully for The Shield. The final seasons had behind the scenes featurettes over an hour long which took you deep into the writers' room and had the writers discussing ideas, concepts and structure of atory and seasonal arcs. Has F/X done the same w/ SOA or did they just push Sutter to the forefront and let him sling monkey poo poo everywhere?

Well, I hoped back on the shitwagon. Wow this show is in the toilet. Despite skipping some episodes, I don't feel like I've really missed anything. At least Jax cares more about Tara's death than Opie's?

But seriously, at this point I predict he'll shoot his own kids in the head and frame Gemma so the guy from LA Law will kill her for revenge, and that Chinese guy will go after the Mexicans because of some obscure bit of Samurai code that only matters because Sutter confused China with Japan.

Peggy Bundy will sing an extended medley of November Rain/Freebird for the final episode's 90-minute montage. Tig will jack off atop a mountain of corpses while wearing Juice's head as a hat. Fade to black.

I promise.

Just bring it to the table so we can all find out the truth.

In episode 1, I couldn't help but feel that the Chinese guy's torture and murder was Sutter trying to top The Shield when Mackey tortures Guardo Lima to death because he thinks he killed Lem. The key difference there was that Shawn Ryan built up to it by introducing that character a season earlier, developed his story and actually gave it some serious heft in the grand scheme of the plot. Sutter just got gruesome, and flogged the dead horse of a brutal and unhinged Jax a bit more. For Christ's sake, we saw him beat some dude half to death, carve a swastika in him, and then pull his teeth out in the first five minutes of the season.

Now on to episode 2 since I don't hate myself enough.

I was thinking of Guardo too, since I can't help but constantly make comparisons to The Shield. I can't help but think that sutter, while on the shield, kept going "Vic should torture him! C'mon, torture!" And Shawn Ryan finally giving in, but then turning it into something that meant something, with the buildup and with Shane being there looking on with true disgust.

And the Sutter only taking away from that is "see? Torture is awesome!"

He didn't want to. His plan was to hit the chinese without them knowing it's SAMCRO behind it, so he got that other charter to hire some "independent contractors" to join them for the ambush and then since they aren't patched, eliminate them and have the chinese discover the bodies.

That dude from the other charter showing up and discovering the bodies is a huge wrench in Jax's plans because #1 he instantly realized Jax killed them - it's the same shotgun from the ambush and #2 the chinese are about to show up and find him there, and he's going to spill the beans and cause open war between SAMCRO and the chinese.

I'm not sure if him cradling the body and sobbing are because the dude's his son or something, that seems to be a theory that this thread came up with, I could be missing something.
