It's so loving dull. That poster is far more interesting than the movie. I saw it when it came out in theaters and found the whole thing dull and tedious, and just when it picks up, BOOM credits. For me, the movie ended where it should have began.

I saw GITS when I was 15 and even the nude-cyborg action couldn't help the fact that I found movie really dull. I do think it's a mistake for directors to ask their performers and voice-actors to deliberately under-act. They think they're going to make the next 2001: A Space Odyssey but instead they'll end up with another Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

They think they're going to make the next 2001: A Space Odyssey but instead they'll end up with another Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The acting won't likely be a problem, but I'm already anxious about how the mainstream public/media are going to absolutely wet themselves over Nolan's Interstellar. The austerity in the name of almighty "realism" and fear of being labelled pulp, the legitimately impressive technical proficiency at filmmaking present in Nolan's work, and deliberate invoking of 2001 in concept, marketing, publicly seen cinematography, and likely finished product are all going to cause some very, very overreaching things to be said about what's most likely a good-if-boilerplate sci-fi movie by a non sci-fi guy. And make no mistake, when it comes to space opera-- even "hard" space opera like Interstellar that strains with every atom of its being to not be called space opera for fear of the genre ghetto and "illegitimacy"-- Nolan is basically a famous tourist and while I appreciate that perspective as a necessary one for loads of reasons (same way I can't really get offended at Kubrick for making 2001, ironically) it is one that tends to bring out the knobhead in everyone myself whole-heartedly included.

The story behind that is hilarious, because apparently he was working on a new legit sci-fi series when his notes got destroyed during the tsunami a few years back, and instead of trying to recover them he just said "ehhh gently caress it" and started drawing porn full-time instead.

One of my favourite movie scenes of all time involves 4 ninjas escaping from tanks (clipped from an entriely different movie) in a small beige Japanese car, in Gofrey Ho's NINJA IN THE KILLING FIELDS. To save you spending 75 minutes watching the ridiculous non-plot that makes up the film, here's the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTrdMDQYlzo Watch right to the end for the best way to end ANY film. Note also: The theme music to MAD MAX 2 shamelessly stolen by Mr. Ho. Distorted Kiwi fucked around with this message at 11:17 on Sep 22, 2014 |
