Need some horror manga recommendations. I've read a lot of Junji Ito and I'm currently reading Mail. I'd prefer something weird and psychological rather than gross out like Uzumaki etc. Anything with a creepy sense of mystery.

Failing that is there the equivalent of crime procedurals in manga? One where a team of detectives and specialists takes on a case. Doesn't have to be super realistic, just gripping.

I started reading Kingdom after getting caught up with Berserk and it seems excellent, but I'm just not in the mood for it.

I Failed At Anime 2022
Manhole is both (biological) horror and police procedural.

Himitsu - Top Secret is about a police team that investigates crimes using scans of dead people's brains. It has an anime as well but I preferred the manga.

Jiraishin is a cop manga, pretty dark & very 90s, has some great art especially later on. Also has a sequel.

Shibatora is about a baby-faced cop who goes undercover as a high school kid, it has a pretty good balance of lightheartedness and drama from what I remember.

Dendrobates is more about an assassin but the main character's day job is in a police department and most of the supporting good guy characters are police. It's pretty dumb and grossly violent in parts, but isn't terribly long and fun in a B-movie kind of way.

Oh, you might also look into Ghost Hunt which follows a team of paranormal investigators. It has an anime as well, and tbh I watched it first then just picked up the manga where it left off because IIRC it was a pretty faithful adaption. I suggest it both for the horror aspect and because the investigative team work like detectives solving a mystery. Psychic Detective Yakumo is another supernatural/mystery manga and a couple of the supporting characters are cops, and if you like that sort of thing (supernatural detective) also check out Un-Go if you're up for watching something rather than reading.

edit: also I was totally not paying attention to which thread I was in and thought this was the general recommendation one, so part of those are not seinen but Dendrobates, Jiraishin, and Manhole are at least. Whoops!

It sucks that it hasn't been translated in a long time, but it's a pretty good series and definitely meets the criteria of what that poster asked for.

I have read it. Loved the anime as well. Would've been a good rec if I hadn't read it already.

Really enjoying this so far. Thanks. The later posts about its translation worry me, though. I've got way too many series on the go that have sketchy translation futures. Might shelf Soil before I get too into the story.

I'm not too fussed about it being seinen, I just thought to ask in here since it seemed like what I'm looking for is more likely to be seinen. Jiraishin looks extremely cool.

Liar Game is pretty interesting, though some of the games can drag on a bit long. But I got turned off by the translators' misgendering of a particular character (misgendering that didn't really exist in the original language). It got too painful for me to keep reading.

It's really a shame. I like the art style in Soil a whole lot; despite being really stylized, all the characters look like actual Japanese people (rather than "anime"). The plot is a little too "LOST"-ish for my taste, but I still enjoy it.

Yeah, it's extremely characterful. Reminds me more of an avant garde 2000AD or Vertigo style than other manga.

I've been reading the LN for Mushoku Tensei lately, and once you get past the prologue and first chapter, it's actually pretty good.
It's about a NEET in his 30s that gets chased out of home, saves some schoolkids from getting hit by a truck and dies, but gets reincarnated in a fantasy world (bonus points for actually starting out as a baby instead of as a teen), where he decides to actually make use of this second chance at life.

As I said, the first part of the novel makes the MC seem really creepy and gross, but he becomes a lot more likeable (read: way less creepy and gross) very quickly.

I went and read what's translated of this because I like those kinds of escapist premises. I have a high tolerance for the creepy/gross bits but the later volumes borders on being erotic novels, even if only very softcore ones, and it pushed past the limits of what I can stand without being put off. It's a shame because the first couple of volumes, which kept it to a minimum, were really quite fun.

If I'd known it was going to be like this I doubt I would have picked it up, but now that I'm already so many volumes in I might keep going if it doesn't get any worse.

Hey, its a new Bambino Secondo!

In which the front of house staff, people who don't cook nor have highly develop palates, end up narrowly choosing the other guy making Ban feel like a moron. "Oh, I'm wrong" even after people at his level or superior have backed his decisions on the food, yet we need a scene of other chef stealing food to progress the plot? Quick question, why the gently caress did Ban expect the front of house to be experts on food and cuisine such that they could pick the best risotto? In his own words the other guy does a good job but not to the same level as the Baccanale, so how would waiters be able to know that difference?

gently caress this series, it's taken a food driven interesting series into some banal paint by numbers "an enemy appears" series, and every more towards resolving it just circles the waters, I half expect the "Ban accuses other chef of theft" to take up 5+ chapters because no one believes him because he's sore from losing.

What? Seriously? Man, that sucks. Do you happen to know when the next part of Zero might be released?

On a similar note, does anyone have any recommendation for manga similar to Gambling Emperor Legend Zero and Liar game? I'm looking for stuff to read where the story arcs are "protagonist given a challenge or game; after game is over, protagonist explains reasoning". I've also read Gordian Knot and Gamble Fish, for other examples. If anyone knows any series based around heists or cons, I'd also be interested.

I already read... most of One Outs, and I enjoyed it, even though I went in with a total baseball knowledge of "someone throws a ball at a guy with a bat". Although I remember there being a thing where for some reason a bunch of chapters just don't exist translated online?
